Problem is that those are on Polish territory according to the new contract signed with the defunct president of Ukraine (not legitimate anyway). Also, the Black Sea coastal region needs to be brought back. A landlocked and neutral Ukraine with its capital somewhere in the west (Lviv?) will be of no interest to western alliances.

If the Ukrainian army retreats from Vovchansk, all pro-Ukraine streamers will face overwhelming ridicule. Two months ago, they saw this place as the turning point in the war to defeat Russia (although this view is quite laughable since only 2-3% of the Russian front line forces are here, but that's what they believed). If even this ends in a retreat, it can be considered yet another massive failure and disgrace.

That's an aspect of the Russians that really annoys me. Certain incompetent commanders who haven't been cleansed yet still run a great portion of the Russian army, and that claim is coming from elite Russian soldiers who are complaining about how their lives and their comrade's are still thrown away because of some bastards with high ranks. You notice that while some directions don't attack until they make sure that they have completely pummeled all possible Ukrainian positions, others merely launch an armored attack with little preparation. I wouldn't claim that I could do it better though I've got a ranking officer background, yet I don't understand how come that though after more than two years on the ground, some commanders haven't learned shit

A bit like riding a motorcycle beyond your skill level.
