Ukrainians Use WWII-Era ‘Hedgehogs’ to Disable Tanks

Russian invaders are closing in on Ukraine’s capital Kyiv, and the battle is expected to rage street to street. The Ukrainian resistance is defending their streets with a World War II-era anti-tank device called “steel hedgehogs,” which were deployed on the beaches of Normandy by Nazis on D-Day. Now the hedgehogs block city streets everywhere in Ukraine. In a heart-stopping moment, two Ukrainian soldiers defused an undetonated Russian bomb, carefully unscrewing the fuse as shells explode nearby.

Hedgehogs, known earlier as caltrops, date back to the use of horses in combat. Smaller ones scattered in front of cavalry destroyed horses' feet.

Those steel hedgehogs were actually used by Czechoslovakia before Germany did, they were used to stop German tanks if Germany chose to invade, but after Germany annexed the Sudetenland via Munich agreement, Germany got tons of these easy tank stoppers. Smaller versions called caltrops were used to stop horses.

1:05 they’re actually called “czech hedgehogs” originally, and the people who invented them and first used them were The Czechoslovakians who originally used them on the Czech-German border as traps for tanks and other vehicles, intended as part of a massive but never-completed fortification system built on the eve of World War II by Czechoslovakia.

A lot of footage has been verified too, like the russian tank running over the ukrainian civilian driving his car by going into the oncoming lane to try to murder them. We have footage from multiple angles of the incident, along with named witnesses & the location. Luckily the old man did not die, (we have footage of his rescue) his car frame saved his life & did its job admirably. But the tank rolled right on top of him. Amazing he didnt die

From wiki; “The hedgehog is not generally anchored to prevent movement, as it can be effective even if rolled by a large explosion. Its effectiveness lies in its dimensions, combined with the fact that a vehicle attempting to drive over it will likely become stuck (and possibly damaged) through rolling on top of the lower bar and lifting its treads (or wheels) off the ground.”
