Junior Apprentice (The Final) Part1

It's the final of Junior Apprentice, and four tycoons of tomorrow remain to battle it out for the ultimate prize: a 25,000 pound tailor-made fund to kick start their business career.
Lord Sugar calls the candidates to the London Aquarium's famous shark tank for their final briefing: they must develop their own brand of bottled water. But in a market flooded with brand names, how can they make their brand stand out? And who will walk away with the 25,000 pound prize?

@thecuriouscritic It’s amazing but 60% to 70% of bottled water including contents of water cooler jugs are free of FDA regulation, according to the NRDC. The energy used each year to make plastic containers to meet the demand for bottled water in the US alone is equivalent to more than 17 million barrels of oil. That is enough to fuel 1 million cars for a year. That bottle used to carry bottled water that takes about 3 minutes to drink could take nearly 1000 years to biodegrade.

@maxckg94 Perhaps. But 37,500 isn't all profit. And Lord Sugar helps greatly, but setting up some of the meetings for them. And it's not just 25,000. It's 25,000 of Lord Sugars money. "Smart" money vs just money.

@thecuriouscritic Another major problem with bottled water is that a traditionally public good has been privatized. Bottled water companies gain high profits by using water from public water sources, then reselling it at 2,900 times the price of regular tap. Remember the story of Coke's Disani water? Pepsi's Aquafina is another example of bottled tap water. Some bottled water's been found contaminated with phthalates - this makes plastic softer & is linked to birth defects.

@thecuriouscritic The Natural Resources Defense Council (US) conducted a four-year review of the bottled water industry and the safety standards that govern it and independent testing of over 1,000 bottles of water found 22% of brands tested contained, in at least one sample, chemical contaminants at levels above strict state health limits. If consumed over a long period of time, some of these contaminants could cause cancer or other health problems.

@thecuriouscritic So, in every respect (except of course profit), bottled water is definitely the WRONG business to be in - for your planet, your pocket and your health! (This of course does not apply if you are travelling through certain countries where drinking tap water as a foreigner could cause serious illness!) May be a good business idea would be water purifiers, eh!?
