IIRC, this refers to a real person, a Lithuanian Jewish girl, with whom Iakovos fell in love with; and you can imagine what happened next, in the concentration camp. Having said that, I can't see how someone will not be moved by reading again the lyrics of the song, with this in mind. RIP Iakovos, these words curry a deep message.

The writer of the lyrics, Iakovos Kampanellis, was actually imprisoned in Mauthausen concentration camp and fell in love to a Jewish girl (whom he eventually lost after their liberation). It's like a love/life triumph in a place where facing death was an everyday routine.

It is also probably worth pointing out that Theodorakis is referencing the sections of the Old Testament 'Song of Solomon' aka 'Song of Songs' (Asma Asmaton) where the female protagonist is searching for her beloved and recasting it as the anguished search by a mother for her daughter lost in the Nazi concentration camps. Notice how the orchestration mimics the rhythmic sound of cattle truck wheels on train tracks.
