Interesting! Could you link to your sources? I would like to see the interpretations of the sword in particular.
@GuthlacYT5 жыл бұрын
Of course! For the sword hilt, it was actually a chape, the tip of a sword sheath found in Thorsberg, (I misspoke, woops!), there is however a debate whether the chape was imbued with a God named Ullr, or with an abstract concept of 'glory', and it has a wikipedia article devoted to it here; en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thorsberg_chape The literature is mostly the Grimnismal, there are many translations, but I googled it and found the first translation that made the most sense, and re-worded it to emphasise the points I was making. For the place names, the source is in the video, from Stefan Brink's article 'How Uniform was the Old Norse religion?', which can be found on Academia.edu Finally, the growth pattern of yew trees can be found on the European Atlas of Forest Tree Species, at this link; forest.jrc.ec.europa.eu/european-atlas-of-forest-tree-species/

Ullr has a slapping festival in Colorado, so he's not completely forgotten. His nature as a deity has probably changed, but ironically he's probably more celebrated nowadays than Freyr or Thor. Can't go wrong with the guy who blesses your winter sports.

I would like to think Ullr is uninterested in the interplay of other gods, uninterested in competition and showing off. He lives a quiet life in Ýdal and that is why we know so little of him. He was chosen to be the regent for Odin because he is uninterested in using things for personal Glory, but True Glory is not about caring about being a big and powerful Emperor. He helps people in duels because he is just and impartial.
@Gabu_2 ай бұрын
That's illogical, as the god of true balance and impartiality is Tyr, who gave his own right hand away as punishment for tricking Fenrir.

Ullr's ship name for a shield can be explained by the use of a old maybe beat up shield without the boss by children as a sledge. The germanic shield's weren't build very heavy so they had several.

@GuthlacYT4 жыл бұрын
The name Ullr was more common in Sweden, in Norway the name Ullinn can be derived from placenames instead This doesn't really tell us much though, just that people who worshipped Ullr/Ullinn didn't really communicate with each other in the same way worshippers of Thor did :p

Maybe he was a god before the others were brought about there for he was separate not one of them. Also he seems to be more primordial. Before the need of the others. I would also argue the sculpting of the others took time where as the god of the most useful tree was just there. Hunting, skiing, maybe other things…… the need for a storm god came after the need for food and shelter!

There's no evidence of Ullr worship in and around Denmark; Yew trees don't grow, and seasonal snow is not a guarantee, so it makes sense that the god is not worshipped for these things there.

I would like to correct you i love in Denmark near a vil lave called ullstrup i Think ullr played an important role for the Danes as well but not nearly as important as for sweden or norway but we do have small Villages or whatever you want to Call them that i at least Feel have a connection to ullr. If you day ull or ul in Danish og sounds similiar to ullr so i honestly Think this is a communicaction thing! Correct if im Wrong tho!
@GuthlacYT4 жыл бұрын
My understanding of the place name evidence comes from academic place name study, I'm not expert in Scandinavian languages, barely a novice in fact, and much less the history of these languages! But one feature noted by historians and place name specialists alike is the total absence in Denmark of Ullr place names. Of course, this doesn't mean that Ullr wasn't worshipped in these places, but in my mind it does mean that he wasn't as major a god as he may have been further north. I think this translates to an absence of woodland and consequently absence of hunting ground. One feature I don't touch upon in the video is regional variation in Ullr's name; in Sweden he's known as Ullr, and in Norway he seems to be known as Ullinn. This means very little, but I would interpret it as communication about the god with the wider world was rare, in a way that it wasn't with Odin or Thor. Seasonal hunters aren't likely to be the ones taking their ideas elsewhere!
