Ulmia 1610 - slotted hole drilling device and its use

In this video I show how I use the slotted hole drilling device on my old Ulmia 1610.
At that time, a slotted hole drilling device like this was available as an accessory for these small table saws.
It was mainly used to drill tenon holes and mill them lengthways. That was definitely quicker than chiseling everything out by hand.
Would you buy such a new slotted hole drilling device today when you have routers or dowel routers? Yes, nowadays you would work more with dowels than milling these complex tenons and slots.
However, if you want to make tenon holes with the router, you would have to build some stops and templates.
With the slotted hole drilling device, the workpiece is placed on the cross table at the fence, positioned and clamped. The movements of the table to the sides and the depth are limited by end stops. The height of the slot drill cutter is set at the beginning and remains unchanged for material of the same thickness.
When milling a slotted hole, it is advisable to first drill several individual holes at close spacing. The holes are then connected with the slot-milling cutter.
Be careful about the depth of the material and the feed rate. Most of the material is drilled out. What is left is milled out with a lateral movement.
The slotted holes have semicircles at the ends. The tenons are rectangular when sawn out. Either you straighten the round corners with a chisel or the tenons are rounded off. The latter is recommended.
The slot and tenon must fit well and any offset or protrusion of the workpieces (scantlings) must be avoided. Before gluing, the parts must be put together dry and then checked.
