Ultima Online continued the tradition of previous Ultima games in many ways, but due to advancing technology and the simple fact that it was Origin's first persistent online game, many new game mechanics appeared. Partially designed as a social and economic experiment, the game had to account for widespread player interaction as well as deal with the tradition of players feeling as if they were the center of attention, as had been the case in single-player games.
Ultima Online began with a single world, with specific expansion packs adding additional territory and new worlds. The second world was the "Lost Lands", with additional land, dungeons, creatures, and terrain. The third was Trammel. This led the developers to distinguish the original world by making the environment more grim, and naming it "Felucca". The two kinds of servers were "normal" servers with both Trammel (consensual PVP) and Felucca (non-consensual PVP) ruleset and "siege" servers with non-consensual PVP and no item insurance. Siege servers support one character slot on an account, limits to ways of traveling and other limits.
The worlds in Ultima Online include:
Felucca - The original world, which evolved to include dead trees and tombstones to distinguish. It has a harsher rule set where player killing is more common.
Trammel - Supported a rule set that does not allow non-consensual PVP and additional open land for player housing.
Ilshenar - Added dungeons and monsters and evolved to include new land, as well as more than 30 new creatures (designed by Todd McFarlane).
Malas - Included a Player versus Player arena and space for 1500 new homes. It featured Dungeon Doom, the then-largest dungeon, and two cities: Luna (the "City of Paladins") and Umbra (the "City of Necromancers").Malas is a series of islands floating in a starry void[8] and is distinguished by a darker artistic style. Malas was praised for its variety of creatures and geographic features.
Tokuno - Group of islands based on Feudal Japan.
Ter Mur - Land of the Gargoyles. The capital, Ter Mur, features space for player homes.
Valley of Eodon - A primitive, prehistoric style land-mass with dinosaurs and giant apes.

I saw the New Legacy thing on my Google feed and i bought 3 months sub and all the content yesterday. I have to say, i didnt like the new client at first, but it's actually pretty sweet now that i got it all setup. It's a seasonal server where you get to be a legend or dont. Your character imprints itself into the game if you work at it. PS- you forgot to mention(so far this is the current idea) that stats and skills from Season 1 New Legacy shard will transfer over to the Season 2 New Legacy shard if you choose to have the character reborn instead of transferring off to a new shard.

I’m not an Ultima online player, also never did play in the past, but i think it’s awesome that they would do this for such an old school epic game. Mad props and support for them and the UO community.

I played it when it first came out, for about three years. It has always been one of m fondest memories of gaming, and newer mmo's that I have tried out in recent years, didnt contain the freedom, and excitement that came from the first version of UO. Now 20 years later, I'm super excited to go back, and experience a fresh world for the first time in two decade, super cool.

I played UO from 1998 until 2009. I left it because of extreme financial hardship after being laid off from one job after another (the economy drop off thing back then - I made it til 2009, though!), and never went back...but I'm considering it! I had legendary EVERYTHING- including a crafter. Legendary smithing was fun... Anyway, I absolutely LOVED this gane. To me there was never a more rewarding game, ever. I didnt care about the graphics (my bro never really got into it for that reason - he started playing WoW), but the entire game...idea, the system, was just amazing. I remember being mad when they did away with identifying magic items. Ha Anyhow - the whole point was just to say you wouldn't regret it. Worst case scenario you simply give up after paying for 1 or 2 months.

I was really excited about this shard but then I remembered that in order to even keep up with everyone else, or to even play this game conveniently you have to install third party programs, write macros, macro while you sleep, etc which at my age I really don't feel like doing all of that again lol

I still play UO Second Age to this very day. I'm old school. Ive played RDR2 and fallout 3 4 - WoW - EQ - star wars - NOTHING compares to UO. After all this time I still work alt characters on UO. I enjoy being mostly alone on the shard. I'm one of only 63 people with an active account. Most just log in to refresh their houses. I enjoy PvM. Not so much enjoy PvP. Enough people in real life try and kill me. Don't need that in a game. I play UO to relax. Not kill other players. PKs are what they are. Part of the game...

I remember when players killed every animal in the world and everyone was starving and unable to build some things. I mean the world was devoid of deer, foxes, pigs, all edible animals. Played it for about 2 years, then went to Meridian 59. Then found out about EQ (a year before release, got into beta) and was amazed at the 3D world of Norrath. Never went back to UO or Meridian once I started EQ beta.

Loved your video, I dont play the oficial shard anymore because of the ruleset (so I play freeshards) and I will try this legacy server but if the open pvp is missing I probably wont stay there for too long

I played on and off for 15 years...IMO it slowly went downhill after Trammel (felucca you mention was the original). This sounds like it'll be trammel with opt in pvp.

Thanks for bringing this up to my attention but I had to check the official website to try to get an idea of what that rework is actually supposed to entail. The words "to focus on the roots of Ultima as an RPG" is repeated over and over throughout the article but fails to elaborate on anything or convey any tangle message. There are 9 Ultima games (that I know of). Ultima Online, aside from awkward controls and isometric tiles, wasn't "like" any of them. So what are they changing? If they're trying to get new and old players, I don't think they'll find much success until they actually say something.

My friends and I all played Beta until the release of AOS. We tried to tough out AOS but with trammel, item insurance, and all the ways they killed pvp we all ended up quitting. I honestly really hope this happens and they do it right.

Are there any Euro PVPers out there playing UO? All the busy free T2A/UO:R shards that are busy are US/Canada based, making it quite difficult for Euros to find decent PVP at a sensible time of the day. Myself and 6 other UK guys who went from T2A/UO:R to the free shards (Requiem then Defiance) have recently joined a couple of UO free shards after a long time out of the game (Renaissance and UO Forever), but we're struggling to find fellow Euros to fight. That being said, there's good action on weekends and the early hours of the morning on weekends (the latter not exactly viable now that we're adults). If there are any Euros out there looking to get back into UO, or playing across any of the free shards reach out!

Interesting. I like the idea that the server dies after a year since that’s around where the economy in all the servers and free shards are getting out of control. A lot in here are praising UO Outlands. And yes it has a lot to offer but as a veteran like me and all players who played since launch have xx millions and top tier gear just a matter of gold links. All big guilds have 5k + prestige. The pvp is still fun, but since loots and prestige doesn’t matter anymore what is the point and fun. So I’ll be looking forward to se what this will shape out to be. It there an official discord for this?

Sincerely talking, the Actual modern Ultima online is very nice.... Problem is I started playing before the second age, so I have nostalgia and I always end up saying good old time was better. well it's not true in fact, nostalgia is always better on paper but not always in real.... I really wanted to have a T2A Shard OSI , but I really want to keep playing the current modern Shard, they just need some change... Spawn, third party software control, more solo content, more clear direction ingame about possible opportunity. I'm an old player and when I log on I still don't know what to do and so few people that u are stuck hunting solo very unrewarding stuff because majority of rewarding mission u need 3-4-5 good player. Getting harder and harder to find good people to play with. ... Anyway ;(

Not tempted to go back and play at all after hearing and reading all the details. The temptation to go back was what struck my interest to listen and read about this but unfortunately this doesn't sound like its going to achieve what I want it to achieve and that's the nostalgia of playing the game back when it was fun before all the drastic changes that basically make it impossible for someone to come back and play at this point.

Played from beta and forward to 2009 or whatever it now was, Tbh its sad they revamp and make a rpg server even with option to pvp...i mean c'mon its 2020 and they have not got any futher. With that said no i wont play it i did not feel ONE itch in my sub finger. However if they would make a original server with that ruleset sure i be in. A many stated the game lost it all once they decided to make trammel and fel. The risks VS reward what drove ppl, this will just be another shard were ppl farm gold with there dragons.

Any game that is just RPG, when it comes to massive multiplayer, always fails. You have to have RPG elements mixed with player versus environment, and player versus player. The original Ultima Online was wide open was a balance of people being safe in towns for the most part if they were able to call the guards or defend themselves, but also being a great risk from monsters and players alike went out in the open. But many of the Care Bear shards failed when all to my shards started losing players and were the first to go when they started migrating to things like starcraft. Open PVP is a must. When they first introduced a 3D client called Ultima X, what you can still see the trailer for online, youtube, one of the things mentioned was an order to fight another player you would have to ask permission and challenge them. They never had so many people complaining and telling them to pound sand as they did after that video posted. People want PVP to be open and risky, even if they are going to be the victims. Your RPG is going to fail.

uo players also waiting to new generation good looking dark fantasy sandbox mmo game release. i never seen game like uo last 23 years. i love uo because skill system freedom dark atmospher. comparing uo with other mmos like comparing diablo2 with diablo3. UO way more rich than others. i agree with you UO remake or UO2 might be better idea. on the other hand a lot of people playing cartoonish indie games. the problem of old games is low fps (locked to 30-25) simple animations and resolution.
