Basically, Ultima and his people created magic, but this exact force drains aether from the planet, causing areas of dead-lands to appear and spread (The Blight). So they fled to a new world, but the Blight followed them there. The only solution was to create a new world, but they would need a large amount of aether and a vessel to accomplish this task. Thus they create Mothercrystals (their actually bodies) to gather aether from the planet, and created humanity to foster Mythos (the vessel needed for the task) Process would take centuries, so they went to hibernate, but doing so, humans gained free will and discovered the power of magic, thus continuing the spread of Blight.

It doesn't really make sense though: according to Ultima life flourished BECAUSE of magic that also caused things to... die? Sooooooo you bring forth life with magic, then the Blight spreads and reset it all; also somehow they implied for the entire storyline that the Blight was caused by humans being greedy with magic as a blessing from Mothercrystals... when it actually would have not mattered in the slightest since Mothercrystals were going to keep drawing aether from the planet regardless. So in the end all the sin of humanity was really just about Mythos not accepting to be Ultima's vessel.

@@actaemazantor9558 Think magic is the life blood of the planet itself (like Azerite from Azeroth), the natural energy of this powered every living things. But human with greed used it as energy source for everything and when the source is not infinite, so that when it ran out, everything will wither away (Blight). Ultima and his race of mothercrystals are just planetary parasite, he siphoned the power and also caused the Blight.

@@actaemazantor9558 Ultima is a hypocrite, so it isn't supposed to make logical sense. Joshua and Clive point this out a few times. His race created magic and his people did use it to flourish, but no one considered the cost of this creation until it was too late. They did flourish, but they did not prosper. So they sought the reboot button. Ultima instilled the religion into the first humans that Barnabas subscribed to as a way to manipulate the truth, so it's not out of the question that he would also manipulate Cid and Clive to destroy the Mothercrystals. He didn't care if the whole world became blighted, so long as Mythos existed, as Raise would wipe out all life. There really isn't a "sin" that humanity did. They only did what Ultima's people did, use magic. Ultima just calls it a sin cuz he didn't intend for man to repeat the sins of the father, so to speak. He doesn't really have any moral high ground as he bounced and left humanity to roam.

@@spiderknight217 And yet somehow it made it look like the Blight was inevitable since magic was the kickstarter for life itself. Also the whole issue MCs had with Ultima wasn't the spell itself, which actually sounded good, but the fact that Ultima wanted to set humanity back into akashic mode... which, logically, can't be an effect of the spell since if you use a LOT of aether to cast it, it can't possibly causes aether to stagnate, which is what is needed to turn things akashic.

@@actaemazantor9558 Uh, yeah. That's what I said. Magic was made, the cost was the Blight. Magic => Blight. Akashic is just "hey you guys found free will, stop that and let me do my thing and wipe you all out." It didn't matter if the people were akashic or not, cuz they would have died anyway to Raise. It was just made as a way to make humanity operate as Ultima intended, foster Mythos so Ultima could use Mythos to cast Raise.

I loved this. It shows that for all their power, Ultima's people were just… other people. Not any better than humanity at all, and much like Clive before he went back to Phoenix Gate, unwilling to admit a vital truth: in their case, that they are no better. It also shows that magic is just another resource. Not automatically better.

This fits in with the information that Strangers of Paradise added. If we assume Ultima is another "dark elf clone" like Astos, those that came before are the Lufenians who tried to create their "paradise" free of chaos corruption in this dimension due to Garland pretty much destroying Lufenia. Unfortunately like before, human will and emotion will corrupt the crystals and bring forth chaos corruption/blight. So their plan was to have humanity follow loyally and without ego to prevent the blight from being created.

Ultima 's Will led him to be alone and while Clive's will led him to forge so many bonds throughout his life Joshua, Jill, Torgal and Cid unlike Ultima he acknowledged others he met learn and listing to their stories and experience in their lives. Which gave him a will for freedom for him and everyone.

There might be a bit of confusion here - but this is my take on it. Prepare yourself for this rant: Aether is the fuel for magic- Aether runs through planets - its life blood etc. Magic consumes Aether, similar to how fire burns coal- in small quantities this is probably fine - but the convenience of magic leads to it being used more and more - addictively - so burn too much coal, you destroy your environment and Greta Thunberg turns up on your door step. Ultima's people discovered and started using magic, the pinnacle of their civilization - they achieved a state of Godhood with their mastery of magic, however this then drained Aether, which caused blight. They had no idea how to solve any problems without magic at this stage - so instead of giving up on magic, they wanted to find some sort of loophole. Ultima's people fled - and wanted to find a way to keep using magic while being impervious to the blight. The solution, to create an artificial world. The cost for this however was that they would need to harvest the Aether from a healthy world and also sow the seed that would eventually create Mythos - the being powerful enough to cast the spell that would create their 'new world' that would be impervious to the Blight. The journey from their dead world to the new world where the game takes place - took a long time- so long in fact that their bodies could not sustain them - Eikon's are their physical forms - Which is why his Ifrit body is decomposed and broken apart in the video. Ultima's 4 armed form is actually his magical essence / soul - separated from his body. Ultima sowed the seeds of humanity and then went to sleep - safe in the knowledge that the humans would eventually evolve to be capable of wielding the Aether needed for the spell to make their new world. However, what they didn't realise was that the humans would grow to desire and want the magic for themselves. They started fighting over the magic and created a blight of their own by overuse of magic. Initially Ultima's people believed that only bearers and the dominants would be capable of using magic, a sort of safety valve - keeping the magic use down to a minimum. They didn't consider that the Humans would start mining the mother crystals and then suddenly everyone on the planet was effectively using magic. Everyone who was walking around lighting their cigars with a crystal, was draining a little aether from the planet - one cigar at a time - Ultima's people thought they had plenty of time because there was no blight on this world. Little did they know their creation's - humans, would be the ones to create a new blight. The Dominants and bearers were meant to be on-top of the food-chain, but because everyone had started using crystals for magic - it created a power imbalance - Dominants and Bearers were now enslaved and treated as tools to be used, as opposed to the custodians/shepherds that Ultima had envisioned. Its unclear how/why Ultima awoke - but it possibly has something to do with the blight or to do with Barnabus. The land of Ash is long since Akashic, so it suggests that Ultima's awakening took place there. Sensing that a blight had descended on the land - they no longer had all the time in the world. Life would eventually die on this world, so they needed to speed up their plans - they needed to test their theory that Mythos had 'evolved'. If Mythos had not arrived - they had Origin - their spaceship - to travel to another world, if needed and start again. My guess here is that they assumed that Clive was Ifrit because Ifrit and Phoenix were two halves of the same coin - designed to be combined - in fact there was no Phoenix Eikon in Ultima's race - instead there was a Phoenix-Ifrit combination. (Mural) This whole game is about Ultima trying to take over Clive's body - Clive assumed the form of Ifrit - which this game tries to postulate that Ifrit is the pinnacle of Eikon / Ultima's race's evolution. The fact that Clive could assume this form - suggested to them that he had indeed reached the level of evolution capable of containing their magic. They didn't randomly just 'give' Ifrit to Clive, Clive's DNA or 'will' was strong enough to assume the form. Ironically - its likely the reason why the Phoenix passed him over, was because he was already the Dominant of Ifrit from birth. (The end battle - actually takes place in the mindscape of Clives mind.) The ending of the game basically shows that Clive and his friends were powerless against the sheer amount of 'magic' that Ultima wielded, but when it came down to the mental battle in his mindscape - Clive's will was unyielding. Clive didn't so much as kill Ultima with swords and sorcery, but with a telepathic attack - Ultima made the mistake of going inside Clive's mind - where Clive was the god and Ultima was powerless against human will. I kinda think that if the story took place one or two generations later, then the protagonist would have been the 'true' Mythos - and capable of surviving. Clive was only born with 'Ifrit' - but Mythos was 'Ifrit-Phoenix' combined. Clive only gets Phoenix when it is given to him by Joshua - suggesting that he had not been born as Mythos after all, he was a close approximation to it. The true Mythos would be able to turn into the Phoenix-Ifrit hybrid on his own.

Another interesting observation: anytime that Ultima is controlling an Eikon- either by making its dominant lose control or by direct mind control (as he does with Dion) - the Eikons eyes are yellow. (Ifrit’s eyes are yellow until Clive learns to control him, at which point his eyes turn blue) - Bahamut, Garuda and possibly Titan, also exhibit yellow eyes when they lose control. Bahamut demonstrates blue eyes when under the control of his dominant. When Clive awoke as Ifrit at Phoenix Gate, that was at the command of Ultima (a trigger), but because he was taken by the imperium and he never used his dominant abilities for 13 years, Ultima presumably lost track of where Clive was. When he steals Benedikta’s wind power, we hear Ultima saying ‘There you are’- using his ability to absorb magic, alerted Ultima to his presence and from there on he was under the gaze of Ultima. Had he never come into contact with another dominant and taken their power, Clive possibly could have lived an uninteresting, albeit short life, because of the blight etc. Ultima would never had found him and therefore would never have been able to manipulate him further via the visions. (The first visions start after Clive takes Garuda’s power, (after the ‘There you are’) which then prompts the vision to lead us to the confrontation with Garuda. Ultima said they fed us like our mother should have…. What he was referring to was that he was providing challenges to Clive, for him to gain XP and level up. There is mention of ‘the lost Eikon - Leviathan’ - part of me wonders if this Eikon/member of Ultimas race, was somehow banished by Ultima’s kind for some sort of difference of opinion. We see Typhon, who has a striking resemblance to Ultima’s spirit form with the 4 arms. Could Leviathan be Typhon? Anyway…. Going overboard on lore.

Ultima created humanity in order to eventually breed a new vessel for him to inhabit that would be strong enough to wield the vast amount of magick required to forge a new world without succumbing to the Crystal's Curse (the incurable gradual petrification suffered by Bearers, Dominants and presumably Ultima's race from the overuse of magick). That is what Clive is, and why he can absorb and use the magic of the other Dominants.

There are an anime similar theme, if I remember it right it's about prison planet where all the prisoners fought theirs way to be stronger. The strongest would able to have Title and gain access to the space elevator to leave the planet. However, the reality is all the "WINNERS" got in deep sleep at the space station so the scientists could study theirs body and genes. There would be Title and then number, like "King of Beasts" 1 all the way to MC which around 300.

honestly, this was the one thing I disliked in the game: the "big" villain. The motives are basically the same as in FFXIV - nurture humanity so they can be used as a fuel to the new world. Also, Ultima is not very captivating, nor is the best Ultima design in the franchise

FFXV is somewhat similar, the Astrals (primarily Bahamut), although they weren’t villains; pretty much orchestrated almost everything, from Arryn being the Usurper that absorbs the Starscourge, and Noctis being the one who purges the Starscourge from the world by killing the Usurper. Arryn tries to defy his fate, but ultimately loses in the end.
