AniGa - Anime, Games & More Problem with Tidus is that he's a designated protagonist with the motivation of his Daddy issues driving him. The story of X was about Yuna's quest to defeat Sin. ***** See, that's exactly it. FF12 is a story that's clearly meant to be about Ashe, Balthier, and Basch. They have all the connections to the story and all the reason to fight. And yet Vaan is portrayed as the main character, regardless of his one connection to the overall story (that being hating Basch for getting his brother killed) being resolved basically right at the beginning when Basch explains he was framed by his brother. The fact that he's in that spot, when Balthier or Ashe would have made a much better main protagonist to follow, is what makes me hate him. Add in the fact that he's not a very interesting character personality wise or motivation wise, and he just comes off as wasted space. I'm not devaluing you liking the character all together though. He is a nice dude, and his goals of achieving freedom and leaving his poor life behind through becoming a Sky Pirate does at least add some depth for the character. But he would be much more appropriate in a supporting role, rather than the game trying to convince us he's the star when he's clearly not.

The people behind FF12 had more than enough story and character to create something great, but then for whatever reason they stuffed Vaan into the main character slot, which basically tries to tell the player the story is about him. Which couldn't be farther from the truth. He's a pointless protagonist. He has basically no reason to even be there, and the game shoves him in your face. That's why I don't like him.

TimeFate Vaan to me is just a chipper young man on the cusp of life to me. Somehow for a series whose most popular protags are mocked for being too whinny, too emo, too brooding, normal optimistic go getter is the true issue....argh FF fans. Not sure how many in this comment watch anime but Vaan always reminded me of Simon of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. He got a lot of unwarranted hate too until the second half of the series. Proof of this was within sidequests and some points of the main story (he ven stop being an ass to Zell of all people XD). Also I can relate with Squall's introverted ways because I myself is introverted. Lastly the reason why he was always so moody (towads leadership that is) was the fact that he didnt like to fail/lose. Despite leader like qualities he was always full of uncertainties which led to fear of risking everyone hopes and lives. He's a well developed character. Not perfect... But still good

Kanny Boy Just for you, I've gone out of my way to google up Vaan, and look at his starting description in the Final Fantasy wikia. Here's a particular excerpt for you: "Vaan does not play a large role in the Final Fantasy XII story, instead being a view-point and foil, observing and contrasting the actions of others who influence the unfolding events more directly." Make of that what you will. But the way I hear it, it basically says "He's not the main character. If anything, he's a supporting character, like Biggs and Wedge in most games - except for the technicality of which you can play as him throughout the entire game, instead of only for a scene or two." EDIT: And Biggs and Wedge still have more character and importance to them than Vaan.

I also like Vann & I love FFXII! Vann fits into the story cuz his kingdom is conquered by a hostile empire, his soldier brother killed in the war seemingly betrayed by a comrade of his & finds himself pulled into this full scale epic conflict once he meets the princess not unlike fellow 'unlikely' heroes: Luke Skywalker & Frodo Baggins. They all start off as regular seemingly normal everyday folks who by fate & chance are thrust into larger than life epic journeys beyond their wildest dreams!

Vaan was a lovely character because he was just an average kid that got thrown into world conflict, helped save the world, and still managed to come out ok and his dreams actually came true. You don't have to be the center protagonist of a story to have impact on it. Many good things in 12 wouldn't have come to fruition without him. Any who, Larsa is my favorite character in that game.

When you take into consideration how large the world of Ivalice is, then you'll realize that Vaan is the perfect protagonist for that type of game. He's a young man who knows nothing of the world aside from "Vayne is obviously trouble," which are also the player's first thoughts about the guy. Having Basch, Batlhier, or Ashe as the main characters would be a bad choice because they already know plenty about Ivalice, so a story told from their perspective would be a bad idea because the player would have no sense of what's going on. The player would have no inclination to question and explore the world because a narrative told through the perspective of these characters would mean that the player knows plenty about Ivalice. Look at FFXIII, Lightning knows a lot about her world, and yet her game is a hallway in which the lore is exposed through datalogs. With Vaan as the lead, the narrative is told through the perspective of someone who has no idea of what's going on other than "this guy's obviously the bad guy," so plot exposition occurs at a gradual pace and the player is inclined to explore Ivalice. Besides, exploration and sidequests are the main hook of XII not its story, so it's only natural for the hero to be adventurous. He's like a Dragon Quest character in a Final Fantasy game. Besides the lack of attention on Vaan allows the other party members to get their spot in the limelight. The main problem with the story in FF games is that the protagonist almost always overshines his party. Imagine if Vaan were as critical as Cloud. Then nobody would remember the likes of Balthier or Fraan. It's also great that he isn't FORCED onto the player unlike Lightning and Noctis. Copied from coment below

Uh am I the only one who likes Vaan? He's not bad, and for people who complain about FF male protagonists being brody and emo, he's definitely not that. Mind you my favorite in FF12 was Balthier but at least I wasn't annoyed with Vaan's presence which is more than I can say for some other characters (Tidus, Lightning, and Penelo).

You mean Revenant Wings (is that it? Too lazy to google right now)? Yes, well, he is a sky pirate by then so it's pretty much self-explanatory we can follow his adventures now. Why it came out on the DS and not the PS2 or PS3 is a mystery though. Then again, a lot of 'key parts' of Kingdom Hearts that tie the games together were also released on different consoles... so... money?
