If one toy was the peak of 80's toy excess it was the Omnibot 2000. Omnibot did a little, cost alot and was reseved for only kids whose parent's had the deepest pockets.
In this video I'll share with you some Omnibot history, prices vs other 80's high end toys, key features, open a 30 year old cassette, spill drinks and write a song with Omnibot 2000 on vocals and servo motors which was not an advertised feature but should have been.
About Slashdance:
"Everything Goes With Black" is available now on 180 Heavyweight vinyl from Ancient Temple Recordings. 8 crushing tracks of Goth/Industrial Rock from Canada.

"Channeling a love from all things Post-Punk, Industrial and Goth Rock, Cadera’s debut is much more than an attempt to honour the music he loves. It’s an extension of these influences, ripped through some vintage gear with all the care dedication you’d give your first born."

I was lucky enough to have one. If I remember right you could program a set of movements for it to repeat. It used the cassette deck to record its program.

I owned all the robots in the Tomy line except 2000....Which is weird because we were not rich...in fact we were on Section 8 housing and food stamps most of the 80s. I still have my Omnibot somewhere at my mom's house. Also you had me at Omnibot 2000 but then you introduced some Industrial into the video....Big thumbs up!!!

Great! Subscribed! I had the little yellow Tomy coin bank robot. All he did was eat the quarter, chomp a few times while stomping back and forth, then lick his lips. It was cute. I loved it. He held 10 dollars, which happened to be about the price of an Atari game.

I wanted the Omnibot or the Omnibot 2000 so bad. I used to stare at the toy section of the magazine all day, wishing I had it. My parents did buy me the Chatbot. It was Ok, the remote was a pain though 🤓

subsribed. Very cool. I was fortunate enough to have the Omnibot step down from this one. I regretfully sold it years ago, and ended up buying another off of ebay with the original packaging. It's very fun to have!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will also be checking your music out!

I have one. When I was 9, I begged my mom for it for Christmas. My dad said no way (and rightfully so). My mom said no way but when Christmas came, there it was. God I was so spoiled... they could have bought a car! I was the b baby of 6. To be honest, I still love it. I haven't used it in decades, but it's special to me. When I did get it, I used it all the time. I loved serving drinks at the adult parties we had. About 10 years ago, I let my son play with it. He was 4. He ended up trying to lift it by the arm and it broke. So sad. I just recently called my parents up to thank them for it again. I have great memories with it still so I guess it was worth it. 😌 I'm looking forward to giving it to my son.

You know the cassette deck isn't just for audio right? If he's in RC mode and you press record he'll record his own movements onto tape and you can play them back. That's what the home base was for.
@Slashdance
@Slashdance 2 жыл бұрын
I did indeed, it's in the manual but it's a valid point you bring up. I don't have the home base so I guess it slipped my mind.
@alec4672
@alec4672 2 жыл бұрын
@@Slashdance I don't think you really need the home base. I've watched some restoration videos on KZbin and there's no actual sensors for the base. I'm pretty sure it's just a piece of poster paper so our human minds can remember where we started off. I guess I'd say find a large open space and give it a try 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

Seconded! It’s just a marker for where it starts it’s program. It had no sensors so it only knew (forward for 6 seconds. Rotate for 1.3 seconds. Forward for 9 seconds. Rotate arm. Announce “what up my robots?”)

Great video! But you completely missed the main selling point of this thing! You can record programs on cassette tapes so he can do all this stuff by himself! You don’t even need to start the tape manually that’s what the timer function is for. You could litterally get him to go bring you a drink at a certain time and pour it in front of you all by himself. Even the box advertises he can walk your dog for you or something lol
@Slashdance

I bought one off of eBay about ten years ago, and she's been my buddy ever since. Even if she dumped my root beer all over the floor the first time I tried that feature. Time hasn't been the kindest to the battery terminals in her or or her remote though, so I need to get those fixed up at some point. (And the tape deck has never worked, my dad suspects a broken belt.) This robot came out about 12 or 13 years before I was even born, but it's always fascinating seeing what companies tried to accomplish back then with the technology of the time. (I have several vintage robots but Ommi will always hold a special place in my heart. Watching this video was a trip back and also hysterical.

Scared the crap out of my friends daughter at first (she was like 2 years old). Even used it in college as an alarm clock to get ume up for class (EE).
