Zen Magnets are finally for sale again, I can't wait to get some. I ordered the set of 1728 and an additional set of 216 to start with just so I would have enough to make this shape. It's an awesome shape! I can't wait to finally be able to build things. I've probably watched this video 10 times.
@boydedwards54757 жыл бұрын
This shape is one that I flagged as super interesting when I first became interested in magnets. And I, like you, wanted to make sure that the total number of magnets I bought exceeded 1860 so I could build this shape. It's such a neat shape!

I spent hours trying to create this but I kept messing up since I use 3 mm balls. I finally was able to build it using a different method that I created that is much simpler. Basically just make a pentagon shape with 15 rings (5 rings in the center and 10 around it) and then make 12 of these and connect them all together. Just make sure that when you connect them you don’t attach each pentagon exactly side by side-it has to be off kilter by a little each

So this is basically a stellated dodecahedron, sort of like if I made little cones of base 5 and built a dodeca out of them, but instead replaced each ball with a unit of the 2 hex rings. The holes are in the same place they would be with the single magnet version. My large magnet shape paradigm is expanded so thank you!
@boydedwards54757 жыл бұрын
I think of it as an icosahedron, because the pentagons go just where the vertices of the icosahedron go. But you can also think of it as a dodecahedron, given that the icosahedron and the dodecahedron are duals of each other.
@SamChaneyProductions7 жыл бұрын
Boyd Edwards yeah I thought of it that way too but it's easier for me to conceptualize it as the dual because I only have to mentally keep track of 12 units. Thanks! Just made it tonight!

Better hurry. The government is doing its best to shut down magnet sales. A sales ban will be in place beginning on April 1.

Boyd Edwards are you serious? All magnets even from radioshack? If so i better get as much as i can so i can finish all my projects i plan of..
@boydedwards54759 жыл бұрын
Ali Hegazi I don't know about Radio Shack. But all of the magnet sphere companies have stopped sales in the US except Zen Magnets, and if the judge rules in favor of the CPSC, Zen Magnets will have to stop sales on April 1. You can get them from industrial sources like K & J Magnetics, but they are more expensive there.

This structure actually uses more than 1860 balls.. so for all of you guys buying 9 sets of 216 balls..... you actually need 2220 balls for this structure: This structure has 12 sides each side is composed of 15 sets of 12 balls (6 balls on top of each other) linked together to form the double layer so one side is equal to 15 * 12 = 180 balls Now because you have 12 sides, we multiply 180 * 12 = 2160 balls so far by now you'll have all 12 sides connected and all that should be left are the holes on the vertices of each side we need 5 balls per gap and since there is 12 sides so 5 * 12 = 60 so in order to make this structure you need 2160 + 60 = 2220 balls NOT 1860 balls idk how this guy managed to make it with 1860..... does anyone else follow my logic here... it can't be just me

Joseph, great job in breaking the shape down into 12 pentagonal faces, each with 15 sets of double-stacked hexagons (with 12 magnets each) and each with one 5-magnet pentagon, for a total of 2220 magnets. This approach overcounts the number of magnets needed because the 5 corners of these 12 pentagonal faces (each corner being a double-stacked hexagon with 12 magnets) are shared with neighboring faces. To get the correct magnet count, you can start with the 2220 magnet count and subtract 360 magnets (given by 12 faces times 5 corners per face times 12 magnets per corner, all divided by 2 because these corners are double counted in the 2220-magnet total), for a revised total of 1860 magnets. Dozens, perhaps hundreds of people have built this shape with 1860 magnets, as I have. That's all you need to build it! If you need further proof, see my video, in which I build it with 10 stacks of 30 hexagon rings and one stack of 12 pentagon rings (with all of these magnets shown in the video at all times - no hocus pocus!), which also amounts to 1860 magnets. Cheers, Boyd

+onaisa hayat hayat They are no longer available in the United States. You can buy them from K&J Magnetics for an exorbitant price. There are some places overseas like alibaba.com that sell them, I think. Just search on "magnet spheres" and see what you find.
