Funnily enough, Carry Grant played a love interest for Marlyn, Grance and Audrey

0:07 - 0:11 That was actually Katharine Hepburn's natural accent. She came from extreme wealth. Her parents were Blue-bloods from the North East. Her mother (also named Katharine) came from the Houghton family who owns Corning (a Multibillion dollar company), and her father was a Urologist. Both her parents learned the Transatlantic accent in school. Her parents spoke that way in the home, and Katharine Hepburn and her siblings grew up speaking that way.

How to Steal a Million with Audrey Hepburn and Peter O'Toole is a cute, witty romcom too. Recommend 😍

You compiled a good list. TCM was my favorite channel when I was in middle and high school. Mae West’s movies are also great for someone who wants to start watching the classics.

I too was a film student for awhile, but then I dropped out due to stress, because college. Regardless, as someone who loves film, I found these recommendations very useful. I too love a good aesthetic.

The hostess provides a helpful service to America by encouraging and providing an impetus for younger generations to sample an art form from earlier times, thereby gleaning some perspective on what times were like in the olden days and what people were enjoying on film back then. Nicely done and a skillfully edited program!

I love old movies, mostly romantic comedies. Here are some recs: My Man Godfrey (every woman should have a Godfrey by her side), It Happened One Night, Pillow Talk, Born Yesterday (not the remake, please), Bachelor Mother. Also: An Affair to Remember (though it is not a comedy) and The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (i cried, it's so romantic), Arsenic and Old Lace (black comedy), Witness for the Prosecution (mystery thriller)

I needed to watch Arsenic and Old Lace like yesterday

6:10 I actually read billy wilders biography and he said that these rules made them better filmmakers. they couldn't show it, so I had to show other things that made the audience think of what they couldn't show. they had to figure out how to do it. he told a very good story in his book. would recommend to read

Great selection. But my weakness are the 30s and early 40s movies

A few more 30’s and early 40’s movies that are must-sees are Arsenic and Old Lace, It Happened One Night, Blonde Bombshell, She Done Him Wrong, I’m No Angel, His Girl Friday. Dishonored Lady is 1947, so a bit late into the 40’s, but still an excellent Hedy Lamar movie

Yeah, I was gonna say, I'd replace Grace Kelly in The Holy Trinity with Katherine Hepburn. She became my favorite when I watched her films and read her biography as a young person.
@gimmepuffsleeves7 ай бұрын
As I watch more and more of Hepburn's work, I would agree with you.

You definitely have the trinity down for the 1950s! But in terms of classic actresses in general, Bette Davis and Katharine Hepburn are, in my opinion, (and many others, haha) the best. And some of their movies are pretty accessible! All About Eve, Bringing up Baby, The Philadelphia Story, Holiday, Adam's Rib, Summertime (you did talk about a couple of these!) Other actresses that I love are Myrna Loy, Deborah Kerr, and Barbara Stanwyck. Again, some of their films are also pretty accessible- The Thin Man, The Best Years of Our Lives, The King and I, An Affair to Remember, From Here to Eternity, Double Indemnity, Stella Dallas. Also, I love Jimmy Stewart and Cary Grant. I think It's a Wonderful Life, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Harvey, The Bishop's Wife, Arsenic and Old Lace, Penny Serenade are pretty accessible.

Recently watched Charade, such a good film! For foreign films I find a lot of french movies from around 60-70s are quite an easy watch. Especially Jacques Demy movies, I think they have some similarity to the Gene Kelly musicals you mentioned but with better music. Every movie I've seen from Jean-Pierre Melville feel very modern as well, a bit Tarantinoesque maybe. And if subtitles is a problem Tati was literally a mime :)

What a way to go - is also a brilliant as a starter old movie, the story is funny, the outfits are amazing (Edith Head was the costume designer on it)

Great recommendations! I've never watched much of Old Hollywood stuff apart from film noir, so I'm defo gonna give those flicks a try. I also think that The Seven Samurai makes for a perfect introduction into Japanese classics, maybe more so that Godzilla, as this movie is the grandmother of ALL heist movies made in Hollywood ever after. Americans watching it will notice all the tried and true tropes employed for decades later. I saw it for the first time when I was a pre-schooler (I live in Poland and back in the eighties our public TV might only have two channels, but they shown great stuff) and I've been in love with Japanese film ever since. If you wonder how the hell was a preschooler able to read subtitles, well...Polish TV didn't have them. They would make some dude called a "lector" read all the lines out with a flat delivery, muffling actors' voices down to background level :D . Also - young Toshiro Mifune was the hottest man on Earth, even when half naked and covered in mud. Or maybe especially then.

If you also love the good old movie musical, My Fair Lady is a beautiful painting full of wonderful costumes! It also stars Audrey Hepburn in a fine role. Though watch Be Kind Rewind if you want the drama that happened in Audrey Hepburn getting the role and denying the original role that Julie Andrews originated on Broadway.

This is an awesome list! I added a few to my LB watch list. THANK YOU for mentioning To Catch a Thief. It’s such a hugely underrated Hitchcock movie. I wrote a long article about it on my Medium page. I think another movie that would fit in your list is “All That Heaven Allows.” Rock Hudson, who is arguably at his sexiest, stars alongside Jane Wyman, a widowed mother of two grown children. It’s a romance and a drama centering around the treatment of older women and how their romantic lives are perceived by the community, particularly with a younger man. It’s a beautiful Douglas Sirk film with amazing cinematography. It’s a yearly watch for Fall-winter for me as the film takes place over those seasons.
