@loooongneck slap the top before you open it in case there's any close to the lid. If you feed heavily, make sure to open the container often so co2 doesn't kill them off. I raised my springs for years in this set up. No longer have my darts tho, lost power one winter for a few days due to an ice storm and lost them all due to the cold new England weather 😢

thanks so much! i’ve been looking at getting some flower beetles and some springtails to act as a cleanup crew how large of a container is like the bare minimum? i would only have the beetles to put them with and i don’t think a large container like that would be necessary

Hello I’m starting terrariums and was recommended to you by my viewers. So I was wondering about the size of the charcoal. I had some activated carbon sitting around and used it for my starting culture. But the size of it was really small. I wonder if I need big chunky pieces or not?

Please stop using the generic word "toxins". Just say what they are. You seem very knowledgeable dude. When they have a high CO2 or low temp environment they will settle into a diapause phase. Ya they can survive in that mode for a bit, but more than a week and they will die off precipitously. As long as you are keeping the moisture content normal the springtails will maintain a constant level. They are parthenogenic btw. I sell them online too so this is counter to my business. I just don't want to see springtails to go to waste. Oh ya. If you need to de-mite a colony if you didn't already dump it into the garden soil, powder some dry green peas or paste some green peas. Legumes are an antifeedant for mites. A heads up before you dump a charcoal culture in. Fill it to the brim with distilled water. Then quickly pour spread it over your current media lengthwise. It will reduce the crush fatalities and injuries. They will travel along the surface tension of the water instead of clinging to the charcoal to get smashed. I'm not gonna paraphrase or grammar correct this because I'm way too drunk to. Take the sober dude's work, then the drunk dude's with a grain of salt and some research. Edit: Man your camera focus/macro is pretty fucking good. Holy shit.

These little bugs are crazy cool, their skin is almost impossible to get dirty and stays dry due to the structure. And the backflips? Holy shit. How does selling them online go? I might start breeding them for local people, the ones who I found in my compost are AGGRESSIVE, they eat lots of mold and vegetation. I haven’t seen molds they don’t eat (I test it with old foods) so these seem to be great because of where they came from (compost bin). I chop up lettuce and crush up rice and mix and wet that into a paste, and drop it into my plant soil where they live. I had one pot that only had a few (visible) and three days after I put the food paste on the soil, they were swarming and the numbers had grown like 3x maybe 4x honestly. They’re so funny I swear
