Good Rundown. Would have liked to see the R3 on this list. Overpriced, still missing 240p, but a bit lighter than the Z9 and seems to allow the option of aps-c or super35 cropped or full frame readout in both 4k and 1080p and it has a flippy screen. Fully agree about 240 absence in Z9 being the biggest let down. My 3 year old Z6 has 120p.. Not sure why Nikon has 240 phobia, they have no high speed cinema line to protect as far as I know...

My gut says they have the power to do it very well, but even if their was a caviate like 5 seconds in high bit rates or raw, I say, bring it on, cause it's all we need 99% of the time, especially if we get a second of pre-roll.

I love your spreadsheet. Very well reasoned and almost complete. I would add a row to the spreadsheet for wildlife videography: Built-in ND filters. The Canon R-mount cameras can be fitted with an ND-Filter adapter which is something to consider if using EF lenses on their mirrorless cameras. Most of the telephoto lenses out there don't do well with ND filters. An adapter solves the problem. Also I currently have the A1 with the 200-600 lens and even without eye-detect autofocus in video mode, it still tracks the subject magnificently. I love the A1 and the 200-600 for wildlife videography. I also have the GH6 with the Panny 100-400. For a lightweight and nice stabilization it is wonderful...except...pulsating autofocus! I typically use manual focus and obtain initial focus using back-button focus. I prefer the video capabilities and color grading of the GH6 compared to the A1 but that damn pulsating contrast-based autoocus! Not good for video. I shoot primarily 120p wildlife video.

Hi, comprehensive and unbiased, nice ! Just came back from the Svalbard in the Arctic. I carried Olympus/OMS OM-1 & E-M1 III with 5 Pro lenses, just a bit over 8Kg max allowed for carry-ons. Covered FF equiv 14-1200mm due to MFT. I took decent shots and video of polar bears at 2Km away with OM-1, 300F4 IS Pro, MC20 (2X teleconverter) and 2X digital in-camera converter. My co-travellers liked my shots much better than theirs, in reach and quality. They had Canon 90D, Nikon 7200 and FujiXT-4. All had long telephotos and some had teleconverters. One had Sigma 500F4 worth US$6000. At 2400mm FF equivalent, finding the target and hand-holding steady was a very very big challenge. With ship engine vibration you can't lean anywhere and can't possibly use tripods (I don't anyway with Only). Some used bean bags, but for me handholding worked better, maybe due to Olympus superb stabilisation. With Olympus 150-400F4.5 Pro, able to max at 4000mm FFE incl. optical and digital 2X. That could have been be a huge advantage, but not sure if I could find the target at this extreme magnification and keep it steady enough to focus.But would cost about US$1K more than the full frame prime and be much more flexible and light.

The C70 has a custom menu option, known as My Menu. You can build your own menu with all the settings you most commonly need to access. Puts everything in one easy to find place in the exact order you need. The C70 has similar image stabilization as the C300 Mark III and C500 Mark II. When combined with the optical image stabilization of RF lenses Canon says there's now a "coordinated image stabilization" in which the stabilization data from the lens drives the electronic stabilization with greater precision.

All the Panasonic G9 fans demand a G9-II with the sensor and the stills from the GH6. The GH6 is a great stills camera and deserves the 11'th point for stills. In addition, for single shots in high quality, the GH6 has the best HighRes mode (hand held or tripod) out there. The detection for moving objects is far ahead of the one in the OM-1.

@@HokKan I made tests with the GH6 HHHR. Places with people, cars moving and buildings. No artifacts on the moving objects, they are used from one of the 16 images the camera takes within around 0.3s. Most of the image is significantly better than a single image, the moving objects and the background they cover during the 0.3s is normal quality. I also saw HHHR from the OM-1. A car moving on a road was shown with terrible artifacts like 8 or more overlapped images. Example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6e5lKSbo7CBfa8 The GH6 delivers a 100MP picture where the blurry area with the car would be taken from one of the 25MP images. Totally usable in situations like this.
@HokKan2 жыл бұрын
@@Ulrich.Bierwisch yeah the GH6 is way better for HHHR. Can remove artifacts from moving subjects and can do it at the same resolution as tripod high res mode. I was referring to autofocus subject detection, separate from high res mode. None of the Olympus cameras have detection for moving subjects, so it's not really a comparison of which has better detection, the OM-1 just lacks it.

The OM-1 has 120fps full res raw shooting. On a 24p timeline, the buffer will give you about 4 seconds of footage. It also has the benefit of capturing the key moment with pro-capture, which seems to be missing from your list. You can use 120fps with pro-capture to get 4 seconds worth of the precise action moment, all in 5.2K with the ability to edit them raw. Of course, it has its limitations with only 4 seconds, but no other cameras can shoot 120p raw, nor at 5.2K, and nor with pro-capture benefits. I think that deserves at least half a point for the OM-1, or even a full point, depending on your usage and workflow. Search OM-1 5.2K 120fps for sample footage.

None of the other options has a pro-capture mode. Shooting still images with pro capture is almost like god mode or cheat mode for wildlife photography. Getting amazing shots becomes trivial. The only caveat: pack lots of SD cards, and they need to be FAST, 300mb/s. I burned through 64GB in less than half a day of shooting Orcas. The other key requirement for wildlife (actual wildlife, not pretending to do wildlife in some suburban city park with ducks and shit) is a decent IPX rating. The only system to give you that consistently and reliably is Olympus/OM Systems.

@jiffijoff97802 жыл бұрын
wow, that was quite some work. Very entertainingly commented - much more value than one might expect at first sight. Thank you for this episode, appreciated!! Now, lets be REALLY REALLY honest. Yes, the GH6 is videocentric, but WHITE field for photo? Gotta be kidding me. Yellow at worst. And pick a decent smooth PL100-400 and that "good telephoto ranking" will increase to green, making the GH6 the winner. Be honest. Yes, no full frame, yes (lets call it) decent AF, still you gonna HAVE to manually focus the super important shots on ANY camera. Basically its really down to the GH6, if you are willing to even consider M43 anymore. I have the impression the "full frame" category is super important and doesn't really count equally to all other categories. Which I understand, so for me its a two step decission process. Step one: does it have to be FF or APSC? Yes? Pick that winner. If M43 is allowed go to step two and pick the highscore: you HAVE a winner on the sheet, be real ! And: there hasn't been a single firmware update for the GH6 yet, lets wait what they will come up with - usually Panasonic doesn't lack on that department. Animal eye detect with good AF hit rate ("good", not perfect) is not yet off the table... The only reason I didn't pickup a GH6 (body only is down to 1.949€ in the meantime!) is that I don't shoot video enough. I highly expect a specialized photocamera utilizing the new 25MP sensor and thats where I'll probably be pouncing on. Edit: maybe "color science" could have been a valid category also. Again, let me express my appriciation for this thorough sheet and categorization process, good work!

For me AF has only two options. AMAZING or Useless. If I can't trust it then I'll never use it.
@jiffijoff97802 жыл бұрын
@@igelkotte absolut valid position. I guess the AF question boils down to the usecase. As seen here in many shots even with Sonys excellent AF quite a few were out of focus. Who is the amazing brand then? Nikon? Canon dual pixel AF 2? CDAF will probably always drop behind PDAF, due to pulsing. But, well, let's enter an easy train of thought: imagine the screen or EVF refresh rate to be 90fps (for the sake of argument). Now imagine the internal refresh rate (transfer rate from sensor to program logic) to be 180fps. Now, what if the CDAF detection (aka pulsing) would only occur in between the visible frames, only calculated and executed in the invisible, internal inbetween frames? How would the user even notice one invisible pulse-frame in the middle of two viewfinder frames? This approach would be indistinguishable from a successful PDAF approach. The only requirement to reach this is processing power! We don't know the real potential of the GH6 yet, but with the G9 we have seen incredibly optimized performance being squeezed out the G9. Projected on to the GH6 processing capabilities I expect huge AF improvements to come. Both in general algorithm approach and pure code optimizations. In another answer here in the comments Kasey argued to "mostly use MF anyway". So I really think in the end it boils down to one serious, and valid, requirement: does he, do we, need the FF look? (which unquestionable is there!!). If yes forget about M43, if no there is no better candidate than the GH6. Even in Kaseys critical sheet it ticks the most boxes.

I just record everything I do basically and realized primes are not for me. Im a lazy youtube hobo and just want a zoom. I take photos and video of people, food, architecture and whatever else. I do have the sony 20mm 1.8 though for inside these hella dark steakhouses where my eyes need to be f/0, iso over 9000 and still cant see shit. Your channel is super practical and love it! Thank you!

Just returned a rented Tamron 150-500mm that I used on a trip with my Sony a7R II ... Holy racoon's scrotum it's heavy but the RAW files are so easy and good at editing, I don't lose anything in the shadows or the highlights and it has so much details you can tell a swancs age by their wrinkles. But it's such a heavy combo at 2.4 Kgs that I'm thinking of going a bit smaller like Fujifilm X-S10 or X-T4 (I prefer the X-S10 grip for telephoto lenses) or the Sony a6600 with Sigma 100-400 to save weight and £. The only thing that really pushes me towards Fujifilm ia that it's the only non Micro Four Thirds company that gives Pro Capture level of performance for wildlife but I don't know how well the RAW files hold up to highlight and shadow recovery.

Best camera for you man, Sigma sd Quattro + Sigma 60 - 600mm F4.5 - 6.3. Perfect camera for you, it can autofocus a subject in 5 minutes, want 4k 120fps? No worry, IT AINT GOT IT, so you AINT GOTTA WORRY. It shoot weird photo format that needs its own contemporary software that only works on a Power CPU Mac from 1997. Camera weights 3kg, lens weights 7kg, perfect combo to feel like Viet Cong in the jungle. There just aint no better camera than this bad boy!

Too bad I did not talk about professional photography with the cameras, there is an option that is not available in the Nikon Z9 and it is video recording for 2 cards at the same time. Which means - I can shoot a whole event of 6 hours, and at the end of the event the card will not work, then what comes out is that I went all the shots of a whole event, while with almost any other camera you mentioned you can shoot 2 cards at once and then I can rest assured If one fails - I will have one ticket left safe.
@duncanwallace77602 жыл бұрын
I think Nikon will bring out some new cameras which might have a lot of features but not be as Exe as the Z9. Might be lighter too, the d850 equivalent. But when? Hopefully by the time they do the 200-600.

You should really try Nikon 100-400s, you may change your opinion a lot, the lens is amazing. If you like Fuji 100-400, and if money isn't huge deal, 100-400s is gonna put smile on your face.

Nikon has the 200-500mm F5.6 AF-S VR that will work with the Z9 with the F to Z adapter. That lens seems really good and sells new for around $1200 USD, used for $800-850.

For the Sony a7iv you can assign a custom recall button for MF or DMF. I did AF ON for AF and C1 for DMF. I'm a back button focuser. Shooting with A7IV + 200-600mm, sometimes with the 2x teleconverter.

Great overview. I currently use my Nikon D7500 + Sigma 150-600mm C lens for wildlife photography which works well, but not for video. If you have money to burn I guess the Nikon Z9 would be a great choice (but still need that 200-600mm lens to be released), The OM-1 would be a great photo/video option with lots of lenses to choose from if you don't mind the 4/3 sensor. Personally, I am going to wait until next week when Fujifilm announce the X-H2s and potentially that new 150-600mm lens. That could be my next hybrid wildlife set-up :-)

To get the 240p you can always use 120 and frame interpolation in After Effects to double it. For really fast moving wings it might be a little rubbish, but I've used it on 60fps footage, slowing it down to x4 and it's been convincing with magpies in flight.

Panasonic for the win again. Before you added the last category, it was the winner with 10 :P I recently saw a video with a long term comparison of the A1 with 200-600 and the OM-1 with the 150-400 and as much as he liked the Sony, he just couldn't shake the Olympus results. Incredible photo capabilities and the lens is ridiculous but his biggest factor was Pro Capture mode. Granted, he commented that he's largely a photographer but he said he's doing a lot more video these days, still, he can get photos when his buddies simply cannot. He also said the IBIS is on a whole different level. Do a bit of searching, you might find a compelling option there. The OM-1 does seem to be a different category of camera compared to EM1X and EM1 mk III. Worth exploring

I think Nikon might be onto something here, not only with the Z9 but also with what’s to come. But the problem with Nikon is you really have to be into some kind of zen philosophy, otherwise they‘ll drive you nuts. Not only will you spend a lot of time waiting for them to release new products but also until you can get your hands onto them. So if you are the I-want-stuff-and-I-want-it-now kinda person Nikon is not the right brand for you
