Why didn't I think of this?!? I've used french cleats in the shop/garage for years, but never thought about using them in a closet! Thanks for the ideas.

Cool idea with the floating shelves, but I see some issues with some of the designs so I don't see them lasting very long. There are 2 main issues and I have solutions that will help their durability. 1) The shelves with the triangle on top will not last long using Brad nails. The shelf itself pulls down so the nails are in tension and over time they will slip out. I see 2 improvements that can be done. The first is to add some screws because they can withstand tension better. The second option is to make a bigger triangle that extends farther on the shelf and a bit taller too. This helps reduce the tension inn the nails at the edge of the shelf and more nails/screws can be added to distribute the load better to each fastener. 2) The french cleat for some of the shelves do not extend down far enough (as mentioned in the video). When a force is applied on the shelf it wants to rotate (think about a diving board) but that rotation is resisted by tension on the top half and compression on the bottom half. A cleat with a deeper base to it lessens the tension/compression on both ends (like how using a breaker bar requires less force). The short cleat base has a lot of tension on it and yet again the grade nails will eventually pull out. The two methods to improve this would be to use screws anywhere tension would be, and also to make a longer cleat connection so the bottom half has a larger area to push against the wall and reduce the tension in the screws on the upper half. This is an awesome project and I don't want to sound like I am here criticizing. I am a structural engineer so I visualize these forces and this just stuck out to me. I just wanted to offer some professional advice on how it can be improved is all.

1) aren't brad nails only for keeping material together while the glue dries? I don't think they are suppose to help with durability - the glue should keep it all together if the shelves will be used only for a few pieces of clothing. But yes - if the load will be greater, then i don't think those shelves will last a long time and both suggestions are good :)

I feel like you should mention that they're modular in the title because it's such an important reason why this closet is so special. It really is such a functional closet design, especially for kids since their wardrobe changes so quickly while they grow. This is a great design and it's definitely added to my list of projects when I purchase a home.

The plywood has gone crazy, prices have been varying, but according the the futures the prices are going to drop. That won’t be reflected at retail level until the hardware stores burn through existing stock. We joke that you have to mortgage your house to build your shed.

I would advise against picking up Glidden paint I know at the home Depot I worked at they never sold and they had a habit of flaking off on the inside so you'd end up with particles in your pain bahr however has plastic paint cans so you don't have the sheeting issue inside the can. I'm color blind and I worked in the paint department

It's kind of hard to see because there are not zoomed in shots here, but if you want to avoid the color bleed under the tape and maintain a super sharp line, make sure to splurge a little for green Frog Tape, and run over the edge with a barely damp cloth first to activate the bleed through protection.

Looks cool, but also looks impractical. An Ikea closet would be cheaper and better for all storage. Also it would go faster to set it up. Ive seen a few home made closets lately. All seem to be more impractical than a store bought system or closet. Also all seem to cost more or the same. Those shelves would not hold my clothes at all. But the size of the closet would easily do with better storage solutions. (drawers are so far superior to those box shelves that I cant even...)
@P0GOE2 жыл бұрын
Some people just enjoy the DIY and customization, and Ikea doesn't in fact ship everywhere, so it isn't always an option.
