I really like Dome Keeper (originally called Dome Romantik as its working title). I use the same strategy of going down 3 layers at a time. As you play on larger maps, the number of relic power nodes will increase, and you'll also start to find power up caverns. One of them is the radar. It requires 2 iron to unlock, but once active increases how far you can see through the blocks, at which point you can skip an extra layer which massively speeds up your mining. There's also a speed up mushroom cavern, a personal teleporter, various resource caverns that regrow on underground trees, and there are alternate gadget vaults that require a resource to open them (usually water aside from the radar). One time-saving tip I have found is that when you return to the dome with a haul of resources, sit in the battle chair immediately. The dome will process the resources, but the wave timer will stop for as long as you're in the chair. This will buy you a few seconds that you would otherwise lose waiting for the resources to be added. Handy if you're close to affording a new upgrade.
