now that the wireless controller is finally out I can say that it is leagues better than the wired version. I had a trigger on the wired one fall apart on me but the triggers on the wireless one are WAY better and definitely worth it. the controller feels like an xbox one controller in the hands now and the analogue stick is much improved too. only downside is no little screen from the VMU while you are playing games since the VMU connects to the dreamcast directly with the wireless dongle. I haven't tested it out for latency yet but just the feel of the wireless controller is a lot better than the wired one

I've been using a the retro fighter for a few weeks now. The dpad, 4 buttons, turbo, and shoulder buttons are its strengths. The analog stick and throttle triggers are its weaknesses.

I personally prefer the original d pad more. I felt it to be more responsive when playing Shenmue

Edit: OHHHH!! I did not realize that had an additional set of shoulder buttons! (missed that info in the review while typing my crappy comment =P) I would have totally bought this controller had i known about it back in 2001when i went out every weekend hunting for Dreamcast deals! =D Best controller for the Dreamcast... The Dream Pad! The Dream Pad had an ABC XYZ face button configuration, and what made that better than any Dreamcast controller is that the C and Z face buttons were customizable which was GREAT for games like Phantasy Star Online because in the heat of battle if you needed to do item or menu changes you had to remove your thumb from the analogue stick, making you a standing target, but with the Dream Pad I could still run around and change items with the C and Z buttons, best Dreamcast controller EVAH! =D

You wouldn't have bought it in 2001, because it didn't exist yet. Retro Fighters released it in April 2020. And the extra shoulder buttons still act as L and R just digital instead of analog with no way to program them.

I made up the first name from the appendices of Silmarillion, though (wrongly I might add, what I was going for it should've been "aramarth" - "beyond doom" or something along those lines). Still holding out for the 6-button version. The best controller for the DC was the 6-button ASCII controller, but they broke easy and they're overpriced on auction sites at this point. I'm using a 6-button ps2 street fighter controller with an adapter for now. Hopefully the striker 6-button will come sooner than later, as they've been promising it for a couple of years.

How? I know the rubber contact pad inside the d pad wears out. Cut a piece of plastic from a Pringles using a nickel as a template. Hole punch it, then place it inside the dpad. I've done this to 2 them I own, and I don't get ghost inputs anymore

i have a couple of these controllers and i love them, on a side note though i will say you shouldn't plug in the controller or vmu when the dreamcast is on lol that's a good way to blow the fuse on the controller board inside the dreamcast and then none of your controller ports will work until you replace it unless you've already replaced it with a resettable fuse but still it's good practice to do it when the console is off 😄 also i really hope they make a wireless version of this controller at some point.

@@ozmond you shouldn't unplug them or plug them in when it's powered on with any dreamcast controller with vmu's. it's a good way to blow the fuse.

I have this controller I find that the directional cross is not good, it is felt on fighting games with special movements

one great example, is Radirgy, by milestone. Your character profile, has emotions, depending how you are playing, enabling TURBO, and start firing, will make your character react more thrilled, and your ship will fire much faster

I like that different companies are making new Sega Dreamcast controllers but I would really like to see a wireless option that has a lithium ion battery even if they dropped Jump Pak support but has internal rumble would be fine but can still see the vmu screen showing animations or whatever that shows on the screen without draining the battery for the controller fast.

The DC controller has hall sensor joysticks. So, if this new controller has a regular joysticks, it is a major downgrade.

It looks very good! The original one always felt clunky and strange, just like the N64-Trident-Thing. Thank god the manufacturers have nowadays settled on less extravagant and more player friendly designs.

Those Retrobrawler guys have improved a lot of systems original controllers. The gamecube's standard pad was so ugly. Thankfully, these folks have fixed the N64 and gamecube controllers.

"ultimate Dreamcast solution is here" i have nothing against you if you prefer this controller, though i wanna mention a few things here in regards to the statement: it uses potentiometers for the analog stick (massive downgrade, considering the original uses a hall-effect stick), rumble isn't integrated so there's no real benefit there over the original in a modern context, the extra digital shoulder buttons are really only useful on a few games (namely fighters), given most Dreamcast games utilise the analog values the original provides. also from experience the Dpad is kinda wank (original is far better imo, especially for fighters), and the analog triggers are a notable downgrade for me. sure, the shape is more familiar/streamlined in a modern context, it has a turbo button for the few that actually want one, and the analog stick having a grippy texture is nice, but i don't personally think those slight advantages are reason enough to tout it as the "ultimate Dreamcast solution" lmao. maybe with an updated version we may get a true alternative, which also has better vetting/QA standards, but for the time being, this isn't anywhere close for me.

Something weird about that retro fighters controller, I can hardly ever pull off a dash boost in Crazy Taxi. With the original controller I can do it almost every time.
