I think bombay and tanqueray are the most popular gins in Germany, you can get them in every supermarket for around 15-20$, not sure about the beefeater. I started with those two gins before I bought pricier ones and honestly wouldn’t buy these two again. There are other craft gins in this price range that I like way more and aren’t mass produced in this scale. For an evening where the budget is a thing I would buy some gin that isn’t that strong or harsh in taste but balanced. Tanqueray has quite a harsh taste and is really dominant in a g&t imo. I really like the Nikka coffey gin which costs only 30$ online which is on a different level compared to a 20$ bombay gin - in terms of quality, tastewise they are very different of course.

Recently decided to give gin another try. And Roku, gunpowder, New Amsterda, and blue coat have been absolutely amazing. Love how each one benefits from a different flavor additive like ginger or raspberrys. Could not stand Tanqueray and a couple of other London drys. I started with tanqueray and I have to agree that it has a very piney taste and I appreciate that flavor. But to me tanqueray just doesn't taste like quality like it kind of just demands your senses to pickup a couple different things and thats it. I honestly don't see a huge difference between beefeater and sapphire but I have never tried them side by side. I do think that sapphire is sharper and more aromatic and I enjoy it the most. I have to agree with another commenter on that note.

Hey Nate, really appreciate the constructive comments! I didn’t get the sharper aromatic notes in Sapphire in the video, but when I mix it with tonic I get them coming through. A very interesting race because other than Gordon's, these 3 are by far the most well known London Dry Gins. While I can agree with your ranking when smell & taste are the only criteria, I ultimately don't agree because smell & taste are important but not all. I actually wonder how Beefeater can be a pouring standard at a good bar when it only has 40% and there's the Tanqueray at 47 point something%. On top of that Tanqueray is almost significantly cheaper than the Beefeater. There's no "straight Gin" drinking. Gin is always mixed and for mixed drinks, you need that alcohol base to amplify the taste. I can see how the Beefeater does fine in a Gin & Tonic (when you're generous with the Gin), but I can also see it struggling in drinks with more components as it lacks the alcohol base. If I owned a bar I'd always go with the Tanqueray as a pouring standard unless the Beefeater comes with a very nice sponsoring or merchandising deal. And for my private bar at home, there's only a few alternatives to Tanqueray. Quality, flawless taste & smell, perfect alcohol and price (20€ per liter) make it the perfect pouring standard and for me that's why it's a clear winner. If I wanted the minimum number of bottles with only one London Dry Gin, it would always be Tanqueray.
@TimandTonic2 жыл бұрын
Funnily enough, in this review, all three gins are bottled at 40% here in Australia. So at this strength I 100% stand by my ranking - after all, it's all subjective opinion anyway and Tanqueray is still a damn fine gin for the price! Sadly, these big brands chop and change their strength depending on the market it's destined for, which is a bit annoying. I would be curious if at the different strengths my preference would be different. I always consider mixed drinks, even if I didn't specifically mention it. There is some neat gin drinking going on, but not usually with this kind of entry-level stuff as you point out. In my more recent reviews, I've tried to incorporate more cocktails plus G&Ts because of this, so sounds like I'm on the right track 😅 Thanks for the comment, and glad to have you here! Cheers 🍸
@psibiza2 жыл бұрын
@@TimandTonic I have to correct myself: Of course there are people who enjoy Gin neat. It's just not for me. For G&T and probably most if not all mixers I actually agree with your ranking as well. Because Beefeater is the better Gin. It's really only the cocktails where 3 or more components are stirred or mixed where I believe the Tanqueray does a better job because of the higher alcohol% that's available here - and for you that wouldn't matter because they're all 40% down under. What about the Tanqueray Ten? Would this be available at 47% in Australia? What about the Beefeater 24? That one has 45% in Europe. They're both better than their standard bottles. Unfortunately, they're also more expensive and while I am willing to pay 50+ Euro for a Rum and 80+ Euro for a Whisk(e)y, I am struggling with paying 30 Euro for a Gin. I just ordered two bottles of Broker's. One 40%, one 47%. I am very much looking forward to this. From what I hear and read it's quite likely I have found myself a new pouring standard. Same bottle, same logo, just two different alc%, one for 15€, one for 20€. Almost sounds too good to be true.

I didn't even finish watching this video. You just can't be serious. Bombay is one of the sharper more aromatic gins out there. They advertise based on the variety of their botanicals. There must be something wrong with your nose. No joke.
@TimandTonic3 жыл бұрын
Hey Blair, thanks for the message. To be honest, I take marketing and advertising with a pinch of salt because these big liquor companies (Bombay Sapphire is owned by Bacardi) will tell you whatever it is they think will sell their product, not necessarily reality. I prefer to deal with facts, production processes and my own senses. You’re absolutely right in that Bombay Sapphire do advertise having 10 botanicals versus Tanqueray’s 4 botanicals and Beefeater’s 9 botanicals. However, not all recipes are created equal - a more diverse botanical mix doesn’t mean more flavour unfortunately. More botanicals by total weight of 4 botanicals will result in more flavour than less total weight of 10 botanicals as an example. Second is the distillation process. Bombay Sapphire proudly state on the front of their bottle that all their botanicals are vapour infused. The other two in this video have the botanicals macerated in the spirit for up to 24 hours prior to being distilled which results in a much more robust flavour. In vapour infusion, the botanicals do not touch the liquid directly, they are gently steamed as the spirit is distilled. This steaming process means far less contact time with the botanicals and only really allows capturing of bright top notes, rather than robust base notes. By pure nature of the production Bombay Sapphire will be a lighter brighter flavour than the other two gins in this review. The most complex contemporary gins on the market today use a combination of both processes to create even more complex flavours than any of these 3 gins here. So by pure science of distillation, Bombay Sapphire has a much lighter flavour than most gins on the market today. Even with 10 different botanicals. Basically, Bombay Sapphires whole marketing strategy when it was released in 1987 was to talk about exotic botanicals to make it sound appealing but create a light bright flavour profile that would begin to convert vodka drinkers. A recipe that, as they say, is unchanged. Gin at the time was an “old persons” drink. And they absolutely nailed that to now be one of the biggest brands in the world. I must say that more than any kind of review food and drink reviews are completely subjective, it’s well documented that people can have a very different sense of taste. My nose and has served me pretty well thus far in the global spirits competitions I’ve been a part of the judging process as my day job, more than just speaking on my passions on KZbin in my free time. If you try these 3 gins side by side though, I think you might be surprised! But again, this is just the opinion of some random dude on KZbin so do with that what you will. Cheers
