How fantastic for you! That would be a great cruise for you. I used to travel to Anchorage for business and just love it there. I was able to get outside of the downtown and really experience the people. Such a great area! You might want to consider one of the one-way cruises from Vancouver. They are more port intensive and end up either in Seward or Whittier allowing you to travel up to Anchorage for a few more days. Also there are so many cruise tours for that itinerary that have additional land based options after your cruise to Denali and Fairbanks. Most lines have these options but Holland America, Princess and Celebrity have the biggest variety. I'd be happy to assist in your planning and booking if you are considering using a travel advisor. Thanks, Doug. We've cruised Alaska twice on the Disney Wonder; opening week in late May and closing week in October. Had a great time. Our next Alaska trip with be Land/Sea starting in Anchorage for 4 days and then sailing southbound. You did a great job covering all the details, especially the budget.

I'd recommend going on Alaskan Dream Cruises. We did a 9-day cruise on the Baranof Dream ship and it was amazing. You don't need a passport. We stopped in 7 ports all within Alaska and got to learn about the Alaska Native culture from locals. I highly recommend it. I advise avoiding September cruises because the weather is rainy and most excursions are shutdown. May is great for off-peak season.

What are your thoughts on getting an aft facing verandah for a one-way Alaska inside passage cruise?

An AFT facing stateroom is always a treat. In Alaska, it is an added feature due to the lasting views of the coastline. We had an aft suite that wrapped around to the starboard side on the Solstice which turned out to be an amazing experience! Check out that tour on the channel!

I didn't know most excursions were shut down in September - that's when i wanted to go since I'd have a better chance to see the Aurora Borealis. Any info on this?

If you are looking for a September sailing you should still be good to go. A few of the smaller excursions might begin to cut back services but you should be good through mid October for the more popular tours. A good way to check is to visit Viator and search the destination and dates you are looking at. The cruise companies normally offer the same or very similar excursions. You can check for availability of the ones that you are interested in.
