I found that a surform shaver works amazing to give you a ton of fine shavings in a very short time

"Start with the knife flat so it cuts nothing then raise it up till it cuts a bit" That is so simple and explicit. If all my teachers at school had been like you, I would be a genius.

As for knives, I have to carry two. One has a steep angle for the "beat the crude out of something" and one for the fine work like making shavings.

I like the way as a very experienced Outdoorsman and instructor you concentrate on passing on the basics. A lot of youtubers would be constantly trying to get bigger n fancier with the content trying to reinvent the wheel but you stick with sharing the basics well. A great resource for many. It means I often know what you're doing and don't Need to watch it but still do because I appreciate you're style 👍 Atb Rick n Billydog

Thanks for this! Your demo's and info are very helpful stuff! I really appreciate you addressing that one doesn't need an expensive, dedicated "bushcraft style" knife .. after all, many folks that get into situations where they need an emergency fire, are those carrying a basic pocket knife, multi-tool knife, or maybe a small neck knife, boating-type knife etc. I will share this video with fishing and personal-watercraft-using friends.

Dan - Excellent break-down and explanation of a foundational technique for making wood shavings for firemaking. Also, liked the tip on modifying the shavings technique for the feather stick option. It is a great reminder that the knowledge & practice of good technique applied to a task often makes it more efficient, effective, and safer. Happy July 4th! 🇺🇸 🎆

@@sonicplanet9193 my 11yo daughter has been carrying my Boy Scout knife from 30+ years ago for a couple years now and every camping trip she starts the fire with a ferro rod and a birds nest she made herself. This years class is in a couple weeks and I have to double check the calendar but I’m hoping we can attend. $400 for a weekend of one on one bonding with my kiddo is priceless

A few people have been known to shave with an axe, but not a good idea. Glad you didn't shave with the knife, it won't go well. However, a good straight razor can give you as fine a shave as you can get. I don't think they were called straight razors until the marketers came up with the term 'safety razor', convincing young men just beginning to shave that 'straight' razors are dangerous, and you will slit your throat if you try one. Actually, it is no more dangerous tha shaving hair off you arm with a sharp knife; as long as you don't move the blade sideways you won't cut your skin. I have one made by the Electric Cutlery Company, Newark, NJ. It shaves great! I affectionately call it my electric shaver. Good tips for wood shaving.

Rotted wood will take a spark, so it is a tinder, but you still need shavings (or something) to ignite.

It's always funny to me how companies try to make you think you need some Rambo knife when a good bush knife isn't very big and doesn't "look" very impressive.

I actually use a folding box cutter for most of my camp tasks. The blades are cheap and easy to find, don't need sharpening because they're replaceable (although I have honed them in a pinch), dual-sided if they dull, super sharp out the box, and have a 90 degree spine. They don't baton well, though.

Might want to tell people, to put the end of the stick on the ground or on a log. To steady it, and Mostly for SAFETY! If someone is LEARNING, They will do it like you show. Which is OK to demonstrate, but not in reality! Plus putting the stick on a base, causes your curls to go to one spot. An they won't have to try to find their curls, thus less work. Plus, the issue of someone trying to make the curls and not paying attention of their blade directed at someones face. Yes seen it happen!

Did everyone fail at creating wood shavings at your last bushcraft class?? lol. Just teasing, Dan. You do not mention if the bark on your stick is as beneficial as a shaving as the bare wood is…
