I keep a solar panel (with a USB port) in my emergency kit (box) and a USB charger that can charge all the different types of cells I use. I can even charge from the USB generator I mounted on my road bike. I even built one of those pedal- powered generators college kids talk about! Any kind of radio with AM, FM, and WB will really help you in an emergency.

Good stuff... However, just a suggestion ... lose the background music. It's distracting

Just a note: Forget NOAA bands as as a plus. Unfortunately more than half the broadcast towers have been shut down, with most people now getting their NOAA info on line. A shame for off gridders, but there it is.

This was a fairly clear and concise explanation of the weather band which is appreciated. Most folks just gloss over the features and assume you know what the distinctions mean when they do their product reviews. There's nothing wrong with taking things back to basics every now and again.

Basic NOAA reports is enough for a person prepared for whatever you might get in your area, like tornadoes in OK, or hurricanes in FL. S.A.M.E. is fine, but adds cost to the radio.

Thanks Russell. Great information. I have the Eton. Still need to learn how to set the alarm and the S.A.M.E. stuff. I really like the Bluetooth feature so we can hear ebooks while we are traveling. Our old truck doesn't let us play through the radio speakers and we are kind of hard of hearing.

My advice is to buy a quality AM radio receiver. It`s extremely important in my region of Louisiana because hurricanes destroy cell phone service, home phone lines, and local radio antennas. Get a Sangean PR-D4W. It`s a top notch AM receiver with clock and NOAA weather band with alert function. CCrane also has great (but more expensive) AM/FM receivers like the EP PRO. They have a new emergency radio as well, an update to their outdated one. My favorite emergency radio is the Kaito Voyager KA500 because it works well and includes shortwave. But get a dedicated high quality AM receiver for emergencies. During power outages they can pick up daytime stations over 200 miles away to get news and other important information. But there are ways to make a simple long wire antenna (try 100 or more feet of wire stretched out over the bushes, lower tree limbs, etc) with a simple 7 turn coil (like a coil of rope 6 or 7 inches in diameter held together with tape) in the wire itself that you place near your average AM radio to greatly boost reception. Buy a 4 ft ground rod and connect the coil end of the wire to it with an alligator clip. BAM, you now have a powerful inductive AM antenna that works like magic. Use at least 100 feet of wire. 200 or 300 is even better.

which do you prefer the SAME or the Alert system? Either the Eton of rht Kaito KA500L?
@YouJustGottaGetPrepared2 жыл бұрын
Hi Lee, Thanks for watching my video. For my situation I like the Alert system Idea once the emergency has started. I actually like the Kaito KA500 more. it is the same as the KA500L only you have the option to use AA batteries with it. which are easier to find if the lithium battery goes bad in the KA500L. Here is a link if you would like to check it out. amzn.to/3tfxKOA. Have a great day!

The radios I have found have shoty batteries and when you store them they will not hold charge after a year or so. I recharge then every 3 months and they ALL fail. Any suggestions?
@Mikey-ym6ok2 жыл бұрын
Some noaas have a setting where you can set to have the radio constantly scouting for weather alert emergency signals. Mine you can turn on and off. If you leave it on, it’ll drain the battery fairly quick. It could be your radios wb is active.

I like it so much that I bought two of them. Then I bought tough mil spec zipper cases to keep them in and protect them. I also have a great Sony ICF-2002 AM/FM/SW/SSB radio and it is still like brand new and works amazing well. U.S. intelligence services used to use it for foreign spying missions for their agents to receive coded messages in the field. Cuba one time caught a U.S. agent and he had one in his possession in his room. And one of the Bush presidents kept one in his house.

When "the Grid" has completed failed, you won't have any cell phone service, cable TV or Internet access, so all you have is radio, and the gubmint(s) will always have radio stations operating- especially the communists. Emergency services and Ham operators can function without mains power as well. You can even make an AM "crystal" radio that doesn't need batteries.

The answer is none of them. These so - called emergency radios are nothing but silly toys. With the ridiculous cranks, solar cells, sirens and lights all of which are almost useless . With all the junk they put in them theres no room for a good size set of batteries like D-cells which gives you hundreds of hours of operation instead of multiple ineffective options. The cranks break off and dont give you any real recharge time (your going to crank while driving or boarding up your house??) The solar cells wont run the radio and take hours to recharge tiny batteries. The multiple power options (a selling gimac) are what make these radios almost worthless. If they didnt do that you could fit 3 D-cells which will power a radio with no digital displays for 250 hours. You also dont want digital displays or flashlights draining your small batteries even when the radio is off. You want a slide rule dial AM,FM, WB , 3 D cells, slide rule dial, big speaker , detachable ac cord and long telescoping antenna (the fad junkers have short ones) The Kaito KA-390 , Retekess TR-640 and Prunus J-05 are far better for emergency use than these junky fad so-called emergency radios. There just a bunch of useless features to make you think "YOUR PREPARED" It like a swiss army knife with a bunch of useless blades.
