Cool project. Video would be a whole lot better if there was A LOT less of you talking to the camera and A LOT more of you actually showing the lanterns being built.

Thanks for watching and Subcribing. With this one, I decided to make the video after I made just about all the cuts and started to paint. Left out all cuts scenes of actually cutting boards. Still improving with each video. Getting feedback good or suggestions on improvements helps with next video.

Very cool, thank you. Since I can only make straight cuts (limited tools, arthritic hands) I'll make all the surfaces as shown but do the face from coroplast and a razor knife.

Other than figuring out the main cutlist which is shown earlier @1:49 mark, I am still at loss as to how the remaining pieces are cut further or what dimensions overall are used to yield 3 lanterns out of 2 pickets. Was hoping to see a straight build video with details.

Really liked your video and your finished work. All this is new to me. What scroll saw blade did you use? And is it much easier than a jig saw? Thanks
@MightySawdust
@MightySawdust 2 ай бұрын
@robertseele6319 For me I felt the scroll saw was easier. Same process you technically drill access holes with drill. The scroll it's a continuous movement, get good corners vs jig saw you're doing more cutting around to get into corner. Unless you drill a bunch of wholes. I was still new when I first did these and video, so I still had whenever blades I got with the craftsman scroll at estate sale. Now since then I've upgraded to the dewalt scroll saw as I scored a good price on a gently used on on marketplace. Still experimenting with blades as each wood will be different. NEWTON MAKES does a lot of scroll stuff and he'll have a video from time to time with scroll work and I believe he'll mention blades he uses. To get some more input on blades.

@@MightySawdust Thanks for the speedy response. One other question if I may? Did you use a brad or a pin nailer? I have neither and I’m looking at getting one. What would advise for doing these types of projects? Also Battery or pneumatic? Thanks so much your help is so appreciated. It’s nice to be able to have questions answered when you’re getting started. Thanks again, Bob
@MightySawdust
@MightySawdust 2 ай бұрын
@robertseele6319 Soooo....Yeah it all depends on your budget one thing. Each gun kinda serves a purpose. And how much space you have. I went with cordless as I started collecting Dewalt tools. Cordless are higher in price. Will be a bit heavier with whatever size battery you put on vs cheaper and lighter. BUT you now need a compressor and will have a hose potentially getting in your way. Could be as stubborn as garden hose. So you need space for it, as can get loud when running it. But then again you'll have air to use to blow off dust. Each version of gun has a range of nail lengths you can use and of course Each is a different gauge. I have 2 guns, Brad and finish. Also depends on what you're gonna be trying to build. I think I was using a Brad nailer with I believe the smallest nail available was 1". Definitely have to pay attention to the direction your shooting them, as they can shoot through the side of work piece. I've been eyeing getting a pin nailer for a bit, but a cordless in Dewalt a bit pricy. It's a WANT but it's not a NEED. I can use what I have. Nice thing about pin nailer, the nails really small and great when working with thinner and small pieces and help hold pieces in place long enough for glue to set and minimize view of the nail holes. It's really up to your budget, how much space if you need accessories to add. Also if you already have a cordless line of tools you can save and just buy the tool alone. Each brand if different too with design, so the feel will be different which is more comfortable. Trust me I googled and watched other youtubers when they reviewed tools and watched what they used when they built projects. With just a pin nailer, I feel you would be limited to what you can do, while a Brad and finish give you a bit more options with different nail lengths and strength. Just like a framing gun...great to have but more limited to when building bigger projects with 2x4. Also would love one, but at the moment I have no big project to build, with current situation. When I do get a new place, definitely more building will happen building out stuff in backyard and stuff...I definitely need to find time and finish editing some videos I've done...lol.

@@MightySawdust Thanks so much for taking the time for such a great response! You sir are a good man. I have all rigid tools. I don’t use them for work. I think battery is the way to go. I don’t know why brad nailers are cheaper than pin nailers. I’d like to try projects like this. If the brad is more versatile I think I’ll go with that. Thanks again. I’ll let you know how I make out! Bob

What did you use to cut out the template?
@MightySawdust
@MightySawdust Ай бұрын
@DarknessOfLegendz I had got to my local library to use their makers room.. so I had them help use there laser to cut out the faces out and made template s. Which then I would trace them onto the wood, which then I used my scroll saw.

@bill2461 even the cedar will be wet...I'll go through stack...get a bunch....let them air dry for a couple days before using...I used some too quick to make a planter...and the dang thing shrank pretty bad. At least 1 or 2 pieced that where used.. could be everyone buying them up for these projects. Have you asked an associate? They might have it in back or up in the reserve steel. I asked a few times when noticing on HD app shows 200 available but you see like 10 in the location. I've had them drop a new pallet too when I would show them the quality of what left in the floor and I saw I'm gonna by like 20 to 50 right now. Which reminds me I need to buy a few, I need to make some for a couple orders I have

The faces you can find all over online and just print out the faces... I just went to my local library that had a laser machine and had them help laser cut them out of acrylic. So I had a template to trace on the wood. Then scroll saw the faces out...and as far as painting I kinda made it up...the generic faces became orange pumpkins, the frankenstein I painted that green tint, and painted hairline area black, to resemble the 60s or 70s frankenstein for the Monsters...minus the spark plug things on his neck...ghost face just left the front white and the rest of body black..to resemble like in scream movies...like black outfit Hoodia with just the white mask...and Jack Skellington face is white, and added the black angle in front, to kinda give affect him wearing a collar of some sort

@cannonwoodworking5917 I just googled halloween face free png svg....eventually I seen a site that had a bundle of them, and just downloaded them. And at that time I went to the library and used their laser to cut out templates for each to use to trace on each board.

Running into cupping pickets...any suggestion on trying to combat that issue?
@MightySawdust
@MightySawdust 3 ай бұрын
@joshsummerfield5893 Are they cupping after you cut them or from the store?...I usually let them dry for a couple days in shop or garage before cutting...if too early they still will shrink or cup. The pickets are typically still wet. They either sit outside "wrapped" or outside for sale exposed to weather so if it rains they are wet...even if a new pallet gets put out the top few might be dry, but all inner ones are still wet. Treat like regular wood make she it's dry enough before using. Outerwise flip the board and put weights down middle to help flatten those boards as they dry a bit hopefully get the cup out.

Do you have a printable copy of the cut sheet?
@MightySawdust
@MightySawdust Жыл бұрын
No, I just Google and eventually I found a page that you could just download or copy and paste. Then since I was going to be producing a bunch each year, went to my local library that happens to have a maker space and used their laser to cut out the faces on acrylic, some where from previous, so no extra cost. And just sized them to be within a 5 1/2" area with space on each size. So I basically created myself a template. Then I just place over the front pieces, trace, and drill an access hole for scroll saw. This year that process went faster with an upgraded scroll saw....from that craftsman to a 20" Dewalt. So much better, don't have to drill such big holes to feel blade through. But anyway yes there is a bunch of faces, I happened to fine one that had a bunch and I download. Then in photoshop I would select a few faces I liked, besides the 3 main ones. Frankenstein, Ghostface and jack skellington, picked a couple faces for the standard pumpkin faces to laser out once I sized them

I didn’t have a problem with your video at all. You skipped the parts where we can just use our common sense. I didn’t have to sit there and watch you glue and tape, etc. We know how to do that already and it saves some time. I think your video was just fine.

Thank you, not sure if your referring to a previous comment. Someone had issue when I said let's use our imagination. As at the point of recording the clip I didn't need another lantern. So I just quickly showed the process without actually gluing and nailing them actually together. But thanks for watching. Been bust summer with Farmers Markets, but I will have more videos coming soon. Just need to finish editing them
