When I first started with colored pencils the instructor suggested that you buy the best pencils you can afford, that you'll never regret it. So my husband bought me the Faber Castell Polychromos 120 set, the Faber Castell Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils 60 set, and the Inktense 72 set. What a blessing that gift of pencils have been!

Despite being what is usually considered a "beginner" with coloured pencils, I bought the 120 polychromos set because there was a discount so I got them for £120. I find that these amazing pencils have actually helped me develop my skills with colour pencils and I am completely spoilt for colours! Previously I had tried the Prismacolours in the 72 set I found that whilst the colour lay down was nicer as it didn't leave white spots, they break very easily and it got very annoying

+Alethea Larrad, I am so glad you shared this. I think one of the biggest mistakes we make is to give beginners inferior products to learn on. It only leads to frustration. Of all the people...beginners need the best stuff so that they can learn proper techniques and not get discouraged. Thanks for your comment!

@@ColoringBliss I know I'm late but I'm so glad to read this. I am definitely a beginner but I got a gift certificate for Christmas and I've wanted to buy the polychromos for so long and now I can afford it. But seeing some reviews etcI hear a lot that these are not for beginners and I've been wondering if they're not for me after all, as you need to be a professional to use them. Actually in one review they said that beginners wouldn't be able to blend them and that got me a bit discouraged. I know I won't automatically make better art because I have expensive pencils but the cheap ones I have are super hard to blend and I'm hoping a better pencil will help me to be better at getting a smooth color.

@@WackyWholesome If you want to try them out, you can buy the pencils individually. Its worth buying three colours so you can try them out blending on the different paper types you use. The pencil most promoted is Prismas, but I tried them and HATE them, tutorials tell you to layer and layer but for me they went so shiny I couldn't layer more colours on top, yes you could apply clear gesso and continue but they weren't for me. Polychromos are silky smooth to use on various paper surfaces. Any new material you try is an experiment between the pencil and the paper type getting a combo you love to work with. We all have our faves. But I would highly recommend buying indivdual pencils in the brands you want to try to see if you like them with your own choice of paper and technique style.

i loved the review! I got the 60 color set on sale last year and i have never had a problem with breakage or anything else. Just a hint. If you rotate your pencil, it will be easier to find a sharp edge that will get into the tooth and make it easier to burnish. I do have one question. Have you tried isopropyl alcohol instead of mineral spirits for blending? If so, what do you think?
@ColoringBliss7 жыл бұрын
+Michelle Earl, thanks for watching. Yes, I have done some blending with rubbing alcohol...it doesn't work as well as the OMS does and the smell is hard for me to tolerate. You are also right about the pencil rotating. I do that all the time and constantly forget to mention it in my tutorials.

Love your reviews, they are so thorough! I'm newer to coloring but just love it and plan to keep it as a lifelong hobby and I'm actually pretty good. I've invested in the large set of Prismas (which I love as well for their own reasons), but I think it would be a great addition to buy some of the Polychromos. It just gives a different set of colors and saturations and variety, and I love that I'd have both good wax-based pencils and oil-based ones. I'm so excited to get to buy the full set of these soon. I started with prisma which i love but i was gifted a small set of polys and i was hooked after the first pencil stroke. Such amazing, non breaking pencils lol i was wondering if you have a review of the Luminance by Caran D'ache? I was looking for reviews on those and naturally i had to come here. You channel rocks

Thanks for the great review! Just an FYI, if you use your hand to block light from hitting the metallic name on the pencil, you would think see a glare and it would be more legible.

I didn't know you could buy the individual pencils fro polychromos or prismacolor. Where do you buy them?
@carolineb4947 жыл бұрын
Loati Blick, Hobby Lobby, other art stores. I have never seen polychromos in stores...only online.

Why the hate for Prismacolors? I’ve had mine for over a year and they have never broken on me. These are just so expensive!

Hi, loved your in depth review! I am going to a portrait workshop and they recommend these pencils. I will certainly be happy to buy them after this review. I subscribed to your channel but had a problem registering on your website to download your information as I am uk based and could not get past zip code entry as our post codes don't fit with the input mask on your form. Please can you help so UK residents can join?

I may be mistaken but I think a very large percent of the reason that Prismas break so often is because of the absolute battering they get in shipping! Right from the factory to the packagers to the distributors to the merchants to your doorstep, they get treated like a football by the loaders and delivery people! Because they have such a soft core, this treatment cracks the core more easily than a harder pencil. Just a theory though...

I always thought that also. If I ever have trouble with prismas breaking at the start because of bad handling or off center I put them in the oven and cool them fast. Seems to help a lot to get the wax stable in middle of pencil.

Great idea, might try that!@@Snickerszn

This is the first review of yours that I have seen. I am very impressed. You covered all aspects of what a pencil can do. But, I have to say that I have never seen anyone turn the sharpener rather than the pencil. I'm sure there is a reason why you do that.

Yes I was curious about the sharpening technique too!

Do you have a 60 colour chart like you demonstrate in this video. I looked on your website and subscribed but I couldn't find it. I have the 120 set of Polychromos and would like to swatch them with your chart. Thanks

Jennifer, is the paper you use for your testing reviews just standard printer paper? Or, a better quality you would use to color a picture? Great review by the way, thank you!

+cuppy1217, all of my colored pencil reviews are done on the same type of paper to keep the results as consistent as possible. I have a link the the paper in the video description. It is my favorite...the Springhill Vellum Bristol Cover paper. Thanks for watching.
