First off amazing content! I've been spending so much time on your channel lately so props to your great work! Questions: Do you see the industry moving more towards tube lights? I wonder if they are not being widely adopted because most professionals already have a great lighting set up? Would you suggest tube lights for someone who has zero gear and is looking to create a new versatile rig for client work like product shots, interviews etc? Currently eyeing a pair of Nanlite 30c's and some sort of 150 to 300w light with soft box to complete my kit. Would love to hear your thoughts.
@NewLayer4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It's good to hear my videos are so useful. Tube lights have definitely gotten really popular over the last year or so, but I think some of that popularity will wane, because some of their uses are a bit trendy. They are, however, here to stay for a lot of usages. They definitely have their weaknesses over things like COB lights, which can be modified more easily and in more ways, and are much brighter, as well as versus panel lights, which are hard to beat for their slim profile and high brightness when using external diffusion. A single 150-300 watt COB + a couple tube lights is a fantastic setup, and exactly what I use in my studio room (finished garage) to shoot all my b-roll. Having a big soft key light and using the tubes as a rim light makes beautiful b-roll insanely easy, and you could adapt that combo to interviews or nearly any other setup perfectly. Hope that helps! If you end up picking any lights, I'd greatly appreciate if you used my links. It really helps the channel a lot :)

@NewLayer3 жыл бұрын
I did a full review on the Pavotube II 6C here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lYqmlWuPm7eHedE These lights are pretty much analagous, so if you have other Godox lights, I'd get the TL30, and if you have other Nanlite lights, get the Pavotube. Right now there's no good Nanlite app, but that will change by end of summer hopefully, then really they'll be identical lights for the most part. The Godox is a TEENY bit brighter, but the diffusion on the Pavotube II 6C is more opaque, so looks better on screen. The Pavotube is also firmware upgradeable which is nice. You really can't go wrong either way.

If you have a light stand with a threader spigot, then you can attach them directly for a vertical setup, or attach a small ball head to the light stand so you can tilt the light however you want. If you have a c-stand with baby pin on top, you would need an adapter like this to add the threads to the top, then again, you can attach the light directly (you would need a little 3/8" to 1/4" adapter) or get a ball head for more control geni.us/kupoballheadadapter

@NewLayer4 жыл бұрын
That's up to you to decide :) I've never tried the YN360 III, but I do like how the remote attaches magnetically, so you can use it as one piece, or detach it and use it from farther away. I will say that the YN360 II Pro does a good job at standing vertically on a desk, while the LC500R does not, so you'd need some mini tripods if you planned to use them that way. The Yongnuo are also significantly cheaper, but the Mark II doesn't have saturation control at all, which is a bit of a bummer sometimes.

Probably won't be using them at their full brightness so wanted something that would last a bit longer when shooting on locations without power to feed the light :) I was looking into a 4 pack of the godox LC500R's but wondering if the YN360 II Pro's would do the trick

@NewLayer4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words! If you want one for both light painting and talking head videos, I would suggest the Godox LC500R or the Yongnuo YN360 II Pro (or version III). They are both pretty long, have an actual handle, and are the brightest (which you'd definitely need for talking head). The other lights are mostly too dim for a key light in many situations. The individual LEDs are visible on these lights, so for light painting you'll see kind of a glowing striped look, so it depends if that's OK with you. If not, then you might need to save some money and get the Nanlite Pavotube 15C, which is more diffused. The only "completely" diffuse light here is the Fotodiox DaoLite Prizmo, but I understand it's very expensive. Hope that helps :)

@josephkrpelan16104 жыл бұрын
hey there, supernice and detailed review - thanks a lot for your effort!!! right now I'm struggling to decide whether to go with the forza- or the godox-ecosystem. one main advantage at forza I think, is that all their lights (pocked led, pavotubes, forza60b, forza 200, etc.) can be controlled with one single remote control (not rgb but at least the color-temps). do you know if the LC500R's remote control (rc-r9) is also capable to control other godox-lights shuch as the m1-pocketlight, the ml-60, and maybe other ones too? i think the godox non-bicolor LC500's remote (RC-A5) is compatible with quite a few other godox-lights, but I'm not shure wether it's capable of controlling the color-temperature at those other lights as well. it would be also nice to just get a universal-remote from a third-party manufacturer, but I think for 2.4 Ghz-standards such a solution is not possible :-/
@NewLayer4 жыл бұрын
If remote control is important then it becomes tough. The Godox RC-A5 only works with the original SL series. The SL II and FV uses another remote, and the VL and UL use another. The new SZ150R might use the same remote as the LC500R, but that hasn’t been released yet so I can’t confirm. The ML60 uses the same remote as the VL and UL series. The Nanlite app is being revamped completely and should control all their lights except some of the older lights like the original Forza 60. I’ve never used their proprietary remote but it seems pretty basic. I hope that helps.

The LC500R is about 2/3 stop brighter than the TL60. They are both good lights, but it depends on your needs. The LC500R has a handle, so I think it's better suited for handheld use or light painting. The diffusion also isn't super opaque, so you can still see the individual LEDs inside. The TL60 is more sleek and has more opaque diffusion, so it's better to use if your lights show up in-frame as a practical. It's almost identical to something like the Nanlite Pavotube 15C. Like I mentioned at the beginning of the video, this is mostly an overview and covers the unique features of each light vs the others. If you want to see in-depth reviews of specific lights, leave a comment stating which ones you want to learn more about and I'll do that for the most popular requests. If you need brightness/color accuracy comparisons, they are available in the video, in PDF form, and in my Light Comparison Tool at the the link in the description. Feel free to ask specific questions as well and I'll answer, but an in-depth video of 8 lights would be over 30 minutes long, which is not practical, so I am introducing these lights to gauge interest in which ones people are most interested in. I did mention downsides to the lights that have them, otherwise, it's mostly personal preference on the style of light you think fits your needs best. I'm not here to tell people which lights to buy, but to inform you of their differences. Alongside the brightness/color accuracy measurements I provide, you should be able to make your own decision.

@@theautomationchannel6920 The Godox VL series isn't the best light in every situation. I prefer the SL150W II, some people prefer the FV series, and the UL series is unbeatable if you need silence. There's no single best light. The same goes with tube lights. The Godox LC500R is fantastic, and beats other lights in some ways. It has better brightness, included barn doors, a great case, and remote. It's also over $200. Some of the cheaper lights don't have those features, but are closer to $100. If you don't need the extras of the LC500R, then it's not the best light for you, because you would be wasting $100+ on things you don't need. It's also much bigger than the Iwata Master R, so if your main concern is size, then you should consider those. All of this information is provided in the video. If there was a light I would never recommend, it wouldn't be in the video, but all of these lights would be just fine depending on your needs. If you have a specific question or scenario, feel free to ask and I can provide guidance on what might be the best fit for that, but recommending 1 light over the others is disingenuous because everyone has different needs and priorities.

@@NewLayer Thanks for the offer. Have nothing but good things to say about Fotodiox quality, but I'm now thinking a 4 pack of the Godox TL60's look like my best bet for single source (DMX) management. My wife is a corporate trainer and when Covid hit I built her a multi-camera studio in a (too small) 12x13 room. Because she wants to move around like she's still in a classroom, I did a (higher budget) redesigned this summer so our main (wide) shot is corner to corner with Jupiter 18's hanging from a ceiling grid as my key/fill in opposite corners and one of my GoDox Bi wands as a hair light. However I just added a 36" wide rollaway white board to the room that has to slip behind the fill light when not in use and now when she backs up, I have a shadowing issue because the whiteboard makes it so she's standing behind the fill source. So I need to light about 6 foot of backdrop from the top and bottom using almost zero space. My GoDox wands will kind of do it but I really need the source to be longer so it's more consistent (and, of course, I'm already using the one as a hair light). Went RGB over Bi for the key/fill because I think she can eventually have fun with the effects which is why I'm leaning toward RGB here as well. That, of course, brings up a control issue as no wands work with my existing Fotodiox Jupiter remote, so that means DMX (Chauvet Obey 40 is what has been recommended). Anyway, if I'm going DMX I want to be able to program effects for her so she can touch a button like she does with sound effects on her Rodecaster. Fun stuff but there's aways a new challenge to solve. Plan to watch your review of the TL60's later today.

Yes, the Iwata Master R is RGB, while their regular Iwata Master is bi-color only.

I choose between Godox LC500R (afraid of its weight but want the curtains) ,Yongnuo (nice I have so much batteries for it) and IWATA (built in curtains, nice!) 16W Master R (all are RGB lights for more flexibility)... Can't decide... could you share your thougts, it could helps a lot.... thanks
@NewLayer4 жыл бұрын
The Godox LC500R isn't as heavy as it might seem. It's pretty lightweight for its size since it's plastic, whereas the Master R is all metal. I don't know what else to say that I didn't mention in this video, you would just have to decide what price and size light makes the most sense for your shooting style. The LC500R is about double the size of the Master R, so will give you softer light as well.

any thoughts on SGC tube lights? they're sidus link compatible and have removable batteries. can't figure out why no one's talking about them. also why doesn't Aputure have a tube in their lineup?
@NewLayer3 жыл бұрын
I have one for a Part 2 of this video, just haven't made it yet. You mentioned the two main special features, the Sidus Link control and the removable battery. It's a partnership between Aputure and Quasar Science, so this really is the Aputure tube light, and I doubt they'll make their own.

Hey! Thank you for the review. I have a YONGNUO YN360 Handheld LED Video Light and I am wondering, do you have any recommendations on durable tripod stands to place the light on at an angle that won't tip over?
