This is a fantastic setup, & I'm grateful for your generosity in sharing it with everyone. One final piece would be the ability to mount an iPad Mini running iMix 16 Pro 64 onto the rig in order to play videos into the ATEM. Maybe VLC 4 will fix the issue with black frames when transitioning videos so that the Pi could do this, too.

One of my biggest problems and where I always get stuck, is the power solution and get the thing well stacked. Well... this is just the thing. I cannot thank you with just a comment. That it’s so portable too is a very nice bonus :) I’m off to the drawing board to work out how to build one of these with an M1 Mac Mini in it as well as the Pi.

Hugely inspired. I'm starting from scratch and this offers a lot to think about in a very modular way. I can build a frame that will support my immediate needs as well as support future growth. The other options I've seen locked me into a rigid case which is very clean and neat but not at all future proof.

Hey David, thanks for the video. I’ve been looking for a way to build a mobile setup and this looks ideal. I’ve been trying to rebuild this setup and I’ve had it burn through an Elgato can link, 3 Sony cameras, multiple switchers and splitters, my ATEM and my Teradek trying to get this all setup & working. Warning to anyone watching this, it’s not easy and having to buy double the parts is really expensive 😢. I’ve found that battery pack shorts a quite a bit out so I have gotten rid of that and come to the conclusion the rig needs it’s own power source and so does my Sony camera. I also had to upgrade every splitter and Switcher so they are all linked up to a power source and not using phantom power. Now it doesn’t seem like it’s shorting anything out. That said, having all of the pieces so close together, every piece in there is really hot. Are you just okay with it running hot or how do you mitigate that. Are there any additional learnings you’ve had? Do you go back to this setup at all or did you also find a ton of issues with it. If so, PLEASE let me know before I burn through another round of equipment 😂

Good day and thanks for this, I picked up a lot of tips. Question, (with this setup) will the Companion Emulator only work on your mobile / tablet if you have the GL.iNet travel router?
@davidjoshuaford3 жыл бұрын
Hi Pasmadong, good question - any router will do. It doesn't need to be the GL.iNet router, but it's a great portable form factor. You just need the phone + ATEM + the Computer running Companion (Win/Mac/or Pi) to all be on the same network. You could conceivably skip a router by setting your computer up as host, and connect ATEM via ethernet, and Phone via wifi.
@KuboriKikiamShow3 жыл бұрын
Thank you@@davidjoshuaford ! I looked at the "setting your Laptop as a network host" and came out with more questions then answers, hehe. I think I'll hold off on the router for now and will cherish the tactile feel of the stream deck for now.

I really enjoyed your video and have purchased your Bitfocus Companion ATEM Mini Pro ISO switcher Controls. I’m building a version of this RIG and have a question. I don’t know if you’re still responding to this old video but when you talk about the travel router at 6:21, you set up your travel router so it does not reassign IP addresses of your devices when using clients internet WiFi on your laptop. Maybe you, or someone who sees this question can point me to video are link that explains how this is done?
@davidjoshuaford5 ай бұрын
Hey! Glad you found it helpful. I have a livestream about that router in my feed, and I’ll do some more livestreams on the GL.iNet routers in the upcoming weeks/months. It’s essentially the same as any other router, and you’re connecting internet via the WAN port, just that these travel ones are very portable and have great features.
@Casuallz5 ай бұрын
@@davidjoshuaford Wow that was fast! Thank you so much for your response. I’m watching your GL.iNet Slate AX Wifi6 Stream and I think I can set the travel router up. @@Casuallz You're welcome - the GL.iNet routers by default run on 192.168.8.1, so you'd set your ATEM and other devices to static addresses within that range 192.168.8.xxx

Philosophical question... Is this good that all this stuff can be hacked into a system that works if you're technically inclined enough to handle the complexity? Or, do we have a long way to go before these types of capabilities are nailed down into a universal and ubiquitous ecosystem that manufacturers can adhere to? I completely understand everything you're talking about, as I'm familiar with all the individual products and technologies, but the reality of it is upsettingly stressful to conceptualize and deal with day to day. This is like a portable microcosm of the rats nests that I had to build and maintain underneath consoles and in the racks of various production studios, back in the early 00's. I had really hoped we had made it farther than this, given how much time has passed. None of the underlying product design philosophy seems to have measurably evolved.
@svenlakemeier3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure where you are heading with this. This is a highly complex system which needed 3 people to run 15 years ago (or a lot more with an OB van for uplink), so it is very impressive to see it condensed down to such a small form factor. Of course there could be an all-in-one solution without the need for most the cabling, but as everyone has different needs (and doesn't want to pay for unused features) I don't see a solution coming up soon. What kind of "universal and ubiquitous ecosystem" are you thinking of?
@davidjoshuaford3 жыл бұрын
Hey Mister, thanks for the philosophical musings - I appreciate that because I like thinking through systems as a whole, rather than just specs. The ATEM Mini line is interesting, because it's pushing pro workflows into a prosumer market, so there's going to be a gap between creative desire and complexity of execution. Like Sven said, what was once an OB van is now compressed down to a single operator. It represents progress, but is still beyond the scope of the average user. The streaming world is interesting, because it takes it a step further and asks the creative person to both operate while performing....it's a lot to juggle switching and still be present with the audience. I think there's still an untapped market for dedicated hardware for the horsepower, but more user-friendly software for setup and control. To that end, I don't think Blackmagic's ATEM Minis are revolutionary thinking. They're just downsized evolutions of their existing tech.

@@davidjoshuaford I'm trying rig together using my extreme Iso paired with a Yolobox setup. I got the extreme because of band concerts I sometimes live stream for my friends. The extra ports are great for action cams of drums and guitars through a few birddog for NDI config. I didn't want to deal with Vmix or OBS. Also, I'm not much of a programmer. @@megamattzero7348 Hi Matt, you can find instructions to install Companion on a Pi here: github.com/bitfocus/companion/wiki/Manual-Install-on-Raspberry-Pi That's what you'll need to control the ATEM Mini Extreme. Out of interest, what added functionality are you using the Yolobox for in your set up that the Extreme doesn't handle?
@megamattzero73483 жыл бұрын
@@davidjoshuaford the yolobox can stream over 4G lte for Free after purchase. I didn't want to have purchase a hotspot, tether smartphone, or a LiveU/TVu in remote places. The Yolobox makes it easy to livestream to multiple places on the web. I made a small rig for the Yolobox with wireless Hollyland Tx/Rx so I can be mobile while I interacting with the different bands backstage. I have someone at Basecamp switching video and controlling audio via mixer. I also want to free up my laptop to edit a project while things were happening and only control the live stream via IPad if needed. I found myself in alot of forests settings live streaming concerts or weddings without adequate power or no where to plug in because the bands took all the power. Lol. So I'm also experimenting with rechargeable solar battery banks. Our three crew team needed to be quick and compact because I just kept running cords everywhere. Still learning the whole NDI network thing.
