Thank you for mentioning the dangers of epoxy resin. I have a friend who is permanently disabled from it. It shocks me how often resin channels actively ignore safety gear such as respirators and gloves while giving viewers the impression it's safe to use. I am now on a mission to find Li Qua Che in Australia. . .

It was like three feet long and it was neat to see his wire frame and then paper mache. He even mentioned you and used your paper mache clay. You have inspired so many people. Resin is just another form of plastic. It has its uses of course but the thing I love about your sculpture is that it's made with easily available, inexpensive and mainly recyclable materials. And not poxy resin. (Ok, it uses pva glue and paint. Although a similar glue can be made from food products) So I am pleased that you went with mache and plaster. I wish I had found your channel when I really needed it - forty years ago!

Thank you so much for this video. I have been trying to cast paper clay with a plaster mold without success. I have been researching if anyone has ever made slip out of paper clay and made castings with it and found nothing. This may be exactly what I have been searching for! I just ordered some and I am excited to try this.

I think that wet paper will stick to plaster, and you might never get it off. Good to see you working away, Jonni...haven't seen a video for a few years. Never heard of this product before, interesting! Thanks for sharing. Whenever I make a batch of plaster, I'll pick up the bucket and drop it on the table a few times...teases up any bubbles in the mix before pouring. Then I'll tap the bottom of the board(after pouring) just below where the mold assembly sits...to make sure no bubbles were trapped during pouring. Of course, I work on either small pieces or bas relief plates, so, it's manageable for me to do that...but I never have issues with bubbles.

Good tips! I'll remember to drop my bucket a few times next time I mix my plaster. And I'll mix up enough so I can tap the mold, too. Do you use pottery plaster, or the regular kind from the hardware store?

@@UltimatePaperMache I've used hardware store plaster and something labeled as 'art' plaster...so maybe that's pottery plaster, too? It seems it dries pure white, captures fine detail and is less chalky when handled after it dries. I meant to say when you drop the bucket, be careful that it doesn't splatter. I'd do it until I see bubble form on the surface, then scrape them away from the pouring end..or take them out if there's time.

One of the things I learned when I was making molds, but had no effective way to degass them, was to 'paint' the mold material on my original sculpture taking care to cover every inch with a thin layer. I made sure there were no spots where a bubble could form. Once everything was coated well, I pour the rest of the mold material over the 'coated' original and don't have to worry about any bubbles adhering to my original. I hope that makes sense. 😊

@UltimatePaperMache It's been so long since I did them both, but I think I just did it with the silicone ones. Those were made for very small, opened faced, highly detailed animal sculptures with as few undercuts as I could manage. I did make plaster molds for bas relief tiles, but they were much larger and not as detailed. I did shake and tap them after pouring. I want to say that I used that ceramic soap, and maybe I got away with it because the tiles were made with ceramic clay. My tiny animals were made with 2-part very quick setting resin.

Great timing. I've been trying to cast your papier-maché clay in a plaster mold but it was a failure. No idea why. Anyway, this material seems a lot like casting slip. Try getting #1 Pottery Plaster which is designed for slip casting and would likely work better for the Li-Qua-Che. It's much more porous than regular plaster of paris and will suck the moisture out of the L-Q-C. Would appreciate any tips on using papier-maché clay in a plaster mold, or if you think it's not going to work. Cheers.

Hi Jeff. I have tried casting paper mache clay in silicone molds, but I can't get it to work. Looks promising. The Li Qua Che looks a lot safer and easier to use that resin. I've tried silicone molds with mache clay, but the clay either distorts the mold when you press it in or it doesn't dry right. Three Billy Goats Gruff, Beauty and the Beast, and the Wolf in sheep's clothing would all work for the fairy tale plaque. You have a lot of options to choose from.

I've been wanting to try paper clay in a mold and didn't know this product existed. I was thinking of trying your paper-mache clay in a reusable mold (DIY made of Gelatin And Glycerine) but wasn't sure if it would work (probably not😹) . Sandy, I don't think the paper mache clay would work in a gelatin mold, because it wouldn't be able to dry. I've tried it in silicone molds, and it didn't work in those, either. I think the paper mache clay in a plaster mold would work! However, the recipe may have to be adjusted because the joint compound might stick to the plaster mold. I am going to try! PS- plaster molds are also reusable, they just need to dry out between castings :)

@@IleanaAlarcon-c5h Remember, there's glue and flour in the mixture, too. Be sure to test it on a mold that you don't care about, because it might not be possible to get the dried paper mache clay off the plaster. Be sure to let us know what you find out. :)

Oh, this has me excited! I'd like to try my Springerle cookie molds. And I see those giant angel, terracotta cookie molds at the thrift stores occasionally. Do you think those kinds of molds would lend themselves to Li Qua Che? Any special prep for the molds?

The only molds that this product works with are made out of plaster, with no release or sealing added. I don't think a terracotta mold would pull the moisture out of the material, and that's needed for it to work like clay slip.

It just didn't make a good casting. But maybe Arlee's techniques would work better. If you try it, please let us know if it worked. And be sure to do a small test piece first, to make sure it's worth doing.

I'm glad you like the video. I just used the plaster of Paris that I got at my local hardware store, but I've been told that the type made for potters will hold up better. If you have a potter in town, or a pottery class at your local college, you might want to ask them where they get their plaster. I never mass-produce any item, so the ordinary stuff is fine for me. 🙂

No, that won't work. It needs to have the absorbent plaster molds, and is used like clay slip.

I see that when you posted this earlier this year, li qua che was only $35, but now it has nearly doubled in price (like a lot of things have gone up) at $65. I wonder if there is a way to make something similar at home? Do you have any videos on something like that? I am interested in this product and process, as I do lots of slip casting with clay, but hard to justify the price :/

I've tried making something that work like this product, but I couldn't do it. My guess is that the product contains powdered paper and casting latex, but it's really just a guess. I did a price comparison for the latex, and if that's what they're using, a DIY recipe would cost just as much as buying the product. You might want to start with their smaller containers first, to see if you like it. It goes a lot farther than you expect it to.

It works the same way that clay slip works in a plaster mold. The water is pulled out of the Li-Qua-Che by the plaster, and it pulls away from the mold.

art resin is not toxic. Also ecopoxy for casting is not toxic either. Anti resin is for pours. Both brands have zero vocs

The instructions on art resin clearly states use in well ventilated area PPE read their sds. There is NO safe resin. I’ve used resin over 20yrs with proper respirator and gloves. The chemical reaction of off gases are dangerous when mixed. Google art resin safety safety data sheets

I have used Aqua Resin, and that was OK, too. But expensive.
