Budget Reloading with Lyman Gear showing 7mm Rem Mag

I have been loading for about 45 years. Target and hunting. I like the detail on process. Velocity's above 32000 fps turn me off. Do do like meat destruction, kick, boom accuracy and meat damage. 358 Win. Is my big boomer in the lower 48. Mainly in Michigan's UP. I very favorite cartridges are 22 k Hornet Ruger 77, 222 Rem. Varment Special, 6mmCR Savage T10, and 308. At this time 6mmCR is my experimental project. Accuracy is #1, hunting bullet is #2. And avoid over power. I like to hunt In order.Deer, Varmints Squirrel and of course targets. Loading over the years has been a learning game. First it was a manual or magazine for info. Now information is much more available. I recently in the last 15 years have been updating my processes... Your videos is part of it. Keep up the good work. 👍

Really great video, information, & delivery! I'm an Old School Lyman Orange Crusher guy, had it probably 35 years. Single stage...do rifle & pistol with it. For me, reloading is relaxing. I like to do it on the peace & quiet of my workshop, & no distractions. That formula makes it safety factor and a relaxation factor. That's a win win after a long work week.

26-06 ..... woot, woot! Killed many of PA Whitetail Deer with that caliber. Shooting an old Sako Finnbear with an old school Canjar Trigger. Press out some 117 gr Sierra SPBT with IMR4350 48 grains of powder.

I load with Lyman gear...great equipment! Also developing loads using IMR 4166 for 85gr Nosler Partitions for my 243 with great results. Loading 150gr Nosler Accubonds for 270win with IMR 4955 and also seeing good results! I use a RCBS Rock Chucker press, Master light scale/dispenser and sizing dies. Frankford Arsenal, tumbler, universal seating die, universal hand primer. I like and use Reloader15 and22 powders and use CFE223. I primarily use Nosler bullets. Makes great ammo.

I just reloaded a bunch of 7 mag! Love the round. Great for lots of game. My deer load is a 139 gr. SST with 68 grains of 7828 sc Great accuracy and great performance on deer at all ranges.

Love the low buck series. I have a Rock Chucker, a SDB and a RL550B on my bench and I've been reloading since the 70's. When I'm developing loads I have a briefcase with an old but tight Lyman Spartan C Frame press (I paid $15 dollars for it at a flea market) in it attached to a chunk of 2x6. A couple of Quick Grip clamps attaches it to my shooting table, I've loaded everything up to 30/06 with it. I have a $26 Frankford Arsenal electronic scale and a set of Lee dippers in there along with a hand priming tool. I have way less than $100 in that briefcase and I turn out great ammo right at the range with it. Of course I have cleaning and trimming equipment and do all my brass prep ahead of time but once that's done all it takes is a little wax lube to resize and load, it also works good at the dining room table and it doesn't take much longer that if I was down on my bench. That's cheap. By the way, IMHO the best case lube is 1 ounce of liquid lanolin to 12 ounces of ISO-Heat gas line antifreeze (red bottle), it's just 99% pure isopropyl alcohol. A few squirts on a hundred cases in a gallon zip lock bag and toss it around and let dry for a few minutes. Smooth as butter and Dillon Precision gets the credit. I bought a bottle of their lube and the ingredient list was on the bottle with 2 items listed. I'm sure you can guess what they were.

Owned a Ruger No.1 Tropical in .416Rigby. One rifle I should have never sold. Was super accurate with bullets from 350gr through to 410gr. Hunted plenty of the bigger animals here in South Africa with it.

I've got another Number One in 375 H&H that's proven to be an excellent rifle. I've shot a few bears with it and a prior owner took it to Africa for cape buff and more. I was tempted to sell it a few years ago, but sure am glad that I kept it.

So I talked with the guy who designed eldx this year when he came by our store on his way out to hunt. I had a bad experience with that bullet so I asked him wtf?. He said they are designed for outside 300 yard hunting..... so maybe talk to the people who designed these projectiles before you tell people this is an inside 300 yard bullet. They are super happy to talk to people with actual feedback. It may work but it's not what it's designed for. Only my opinion "with great results" if you loading for hunting thinking max range of 300 to 400 interlocks work great! I still get round about moa out to 400 yards with interlocks and when I shoot my meat it sits right where it was when I pulled the trigger.

Using lyman all American turret press . Just recently upgraded from the Lyman ST-6. So far I like the Lyman All American turret press. Not so much the priming system it has so I use my trusty RCBS hand primer. But I have been getting some very nice results loading 147 gr ELD M , 6.5 mm.. I have a few A tips I just worked up and excited about trying them put this weekend.

I have custody of my father-in-law's Rem. 700, 7mm mag. It's an old one; I'm guessing '63 or so. It didn't have a hooded front sight, but does have a groove for the sight hood. The first load I tried was with a 140 gr. Ballistic Silvertip bullet. The average of three 100 yard groups was just under .7" I did take a deer with those loads, but was less than happy with the meat damage - 2/3 of the rib cage turned to grape jelly. So much for the 7mm Mag. at 30 yards

Ya, I tend to hunt with the heavier, slower bullets in the 160 - 175 grain range with my 7mm Remington Magnum. Slows the velocity and the heavier bullets tend to hang together & penetrate well.

Been a handloader since the early 90s. I use the same RCBS Rock Chucker II single stage kit I bought for about $200, and load both rifle and handgun cartridges for a myriad collection. One observation...You mentioned the importance of removing the case lube (but not a word about any other possible contaminants such as gun grease, dried mud, flash hole carbon, crud, etc you're likely to find on fired brass) but not a word about case cleaning, processes like tumbling, sonic, or extra attention to flash hole preparation. Those are critical steps in my opinion to get a first rate, top grade handloaded cartridge.

Based on your videos, I bought a Lyman Ideal press and their Brass Smith powder measure. I use the Ideal on lighter to medium chores and it has been great. In fact, it has the least amount of play/slop in the linkage of any other press I have - including Redding and RCBS. The Lyman Brass Smith powder measure has been amazing in the consistency of charges thrown - pistol and rifle. Note: Good cleaning and prep out of the box, before first use, is important - I think that was another one of your videos. Big thumbs up on both the Lyman press and powder measure. Now, if I could only get my hands on a Ruger No. 1.

Honestly, if you're just in need of a single stage rifle press its rcbs rockchucker vs lee classic cast single. Lee has a slight advantage advantage in spent primer collection/priming arm. Both are heavy and will easily handle the heaviest of cartridges/ reforming tasks.

Always great to see Guy. I love his quiet enthusiasm. I have only 1 #1 so far- luckily it is a 30-06 with a Keplinger safety and Keplinger set trigger. I hope to get another #1 someday- maybe 7x57, preferably an RSI (love Mannlicher style stocks), but a stainless with laminate stock would be great too- maybe a 25-06?🤔. Haven't been able to start reloading yet due to a compact living situation, but i have all the stuff. Looking forward to various milsurps (incl a Krag😁) plus handgun. I will probably never use a 7mm Mag, but 7mm-08 is interesting. A series like this makes a lot of sense. I may never have a progressive press, but i like the idea of a turret press. The Redding T7 seems like a good one.

Something useful to consider for hunting ammo is probable impact velocity. Hornady does provide information on a recommended striking velocity range for optimal expansion/bullet performance each model of hunting bullet, or at least for those I've used.

I also use all single stage stuff. It is where I started out in the beginning. Of my rifle and pistol Reloading. The only thing that makes a huge difference in your basic reloading gear , will be your type of brass processing system. I invested in the Franklin Arsenal. And I am super glad.

I worked up a load for my 7 mm Remington mag, using 62 grains of IMR 4831, topped it off with a Hornaday 162 grain spire point. My rifle is a Winchester M70 with a 26" barrel. Unfortunately I didn't have a chronograph with me at the time, so I worked up the load using pressure signs. I don't remember what my starting load was but 62 was my last one I worked up to, and I had absolutely no signs of excessive pressure so I left it at that.

Thanks for the informative clip. Budget reloading is very much doable. If you are methodic you can load anything with a single stage press. You need good dies and to make sure you map a process and follow it.

This just goes to show you don't need to spend a small fortune on reloading equipment. I purchased my only press in 1982 an RCBS Rockchucker and it still performs today, I load for all my hunting guns and a 6mm BR norma bench gun and a 6.5 CM, and accuracy is not an issue ........it's slow & steady

great video, I'm a fan of the single stage press, which i use for a lot of varying loads, yes you can spend a bucket load of cash on other things for reloading, but i like to use extra cash for other things, , the main idea for reloading is to make it cheaper and to be able to shoot more, and the 7mmrm is my cartridge of choice, once you find the parameters which you want , the single stage cheaper presses work just fine. i get consistent loads every time , unless i cock it up, :) which we all do occasionally, keep them coming dudes , the content is great :)

I think that the more money you put into a setup, the higher, volume you get out. It has very little to do with precision/ quality that's almost all on the reloader

Thanks for the loading discussion about 7mm Remington mag. You and your friend did a great job. Have you ever had difficulty sizing the magnum case down just above the belt on the case? I had this problem and bought a bushing and die kit which works for most of the belted cases. I have 7mm Rem mag and 300 win mag and it works for both of these. I have not not heard others speak about this problem and wondered what you think or if my sizing problem was unusual. Thanks again.

I've heard of others having issues with this, as well as poor brass life on belted magnums in general. But shouldn't you be neck sizing anyway? Unless you're running a semi auto 7mag in which case I need to see this

I know exactly what you are talking about and eventual case separation. I've seen the bulge and have tossed cases as opposed to pushing them. I've partially neck sized to minimize furthering the problem. Then I ran into some articles and a website to buy a device like what you are talking about, but I just never got around to buying one. It'd save me some money maintaining those cases a bit longer.

The 7mm Rem Mag is my favorite chambering. I have a Weatherby Vanguard S1 that I have had for over 20 years now. It came with a target from the factory with a 3/4 MOA group on it with the crappy test ammo companies use. I find that after a load work-up and finding the node, I can shoot 1/4 MOA with it. In my mind best bang for the buck.

Need to have one No 1 in the safe at all times. Mine is 7-08 at present. The 7RM is nice to have around too, That is in a Merkel K1. Used a fair number of Lyman products, never had any issues with them. I have a Lyman 1000 elec scale from around 1990 ish, still going strong. Still use a beam scale to double check it though. Lyman has likely forgot more about reloading tools than some other companies know.

How do you lube the inside of the case neck? I have rubbed imperial lube over the case mouth with my finger. Seems that stuff gums up and keeps media down on the inside of the bottle neck.

I just brush the inside of the case neck with a nylon bristle brush. Seems to be all that it needs. In the past I have used graphite, which worked well.

That's been tough for me. I've got a decent supply of powder, bullets, and cases. And I've been able to fine more of those components. But primers? I'm limited to what I've got on hand. Haven't seen any for sale locally in quite a while.

Hornady seating dies are the best in the business for the money. They use the same in-line seating system as Redding's fancy die but without the spring-loaded feature and the micrometer dial. You can add the micrometer dial later if you wish. Plus, you can use the same die to seat bullets in your .243 Win as the die is not cartridge-specific.

I'm using the Hornady dies for my 6mm Creedmoor and they are very nice! Groups are excellent and loading on them is just completely trouble free. Great die, particularly for the price.

Hornady dies will work (7/8" x 14 threading) but NOT the lock-n-load bushings since this press is direct-threaded 7/8" x 14...

Great video! I’d love to see you do a video on the 264 Win. Mag. I’m still wondering why the reloading manuals continue to under load this cartridge? Looking at similar loadings with the same grain bullets and identical powders, the 7mm Mag is loaded 10 grains higher with IMR 8133 using 140 grain bullets. These two cartridges share the same case so I’m not sure why the large difference in charges? I would appreciate your opinions. Thanks again.

Obviously I’m not Gavin, but I load for .280 AI, so I thought that I’d chime in. I don’t pass along my data, I don’t want to be responsible for it, but I use RL19 powder with 140 gr. Nosler ballistic tip bullets in a Remington action that I blueprinted and chambered myself back when I was in school to be a gunsmith. I’m curious now if Gavin has any experience with this cartridge.

I generally like Lyman, I have a bunch of their stuff, it works well and is a good value. However, the All American 8 I purchased from them is one big OrangeTurd! Every station if off and some are pitiful. Huge disappointment! Buyer beware!
