Recording Drums - Mono Room Mic Experimenting

I'm continuing my workflow shake up with some mono room mic experimenting. I LOVE mono room mics. In my opinion a mono room mic is kind of a secret weapon of ambience. However, I've gotten in a flow of using the same mics. Do they work? Of course but I want to change things up a bit and the only way I know how to do that is to explore new options. Or in some cases re-explore!
The point is to take some time to find some new sounds. Whatever mics you have put them to use in a new way and hear what happens!

Thank you for taking the time to make these videos! I've been making music at home for over a decade, mostly up in the remote northern regions of Michigan (i.e. little to no access to professional studios). I've mostly relied on amp sims, programmed drums, etc, using a couple decent pencil condensers and a decent selection of dynamic mics to capture live drums whenever I have the opportunity. I've primarily invested my time in the mixing process to get it to sound as decent as I though I could. I've achieved what I consider some pretty decent results form this, but holy cow, after recently moving to a space where I can record live drums more regularly, and even with the limited time I've invested on drum recording in the last couple months based on what I've learned here, I've gotten more life-like and exciting sounds than I ever thought I'd be capable of capturing in a home studio. After moving to my new place and before discovering your channel, I started by investing a couple hundred bucks in home-built acoustic treatment and adding a MXL r144 as a kit front mic. My room is still far from optimal, and I would wager it's pretty similar to the limitations most home studio folks have to work with, but both of these simple changes made a huge difference. I've recently added one of the single pattern 4047's and a 12 Gauge Red 12 to the palette as well, and taken some time to experiment with different placements, etc, based on what I've learned here. With the 4047, Red12, and r144 as texture mics, combined with my selection of dynamics as close mics (mostly SM57s, Sennheiser e604s, and a D6 for kick), the difference compared to my old, "fix it in the mix," close-mic-only recordings has been eye-opening. I don't have a perfect space or a ton of money to spend, but I have a workable space and a few hundred buck to throw at the process on a fairly regular basis, which I feel like is true of many in the home studio world. Your videos have been hugely helpful, both on the technique end of how to capture quality source material using what I already own, and in helping me build a plan for intelligently acquiring some affordable quality mics and other gear over the next few years here. Your mic discussion with Matt was one of the most insightful things I've ever seen on KZbin regarding music production. I will be adding a pair of k87's as my next mic purchase. For people who are either interested or pretty much forced (due to location in my case) to go down the rabbit hole of capturing these sounds themselves, this information is incredibly valuable. For those who don't want to invest the time and money required to do it themselves, I hope channels like yours serve as a reminder of the value of paying a professional studio/engineer: years of dedication, experience, and equipment that collectively leads to the ability to capture great music. I make primarily hard rock/metal. I hope more people in the rock/metal community can find stuff like this and realize that great music in this genre is not only attainable, but simply better, with real instruments played by real people and captured with decent equipment and the expertise to know how to use it.

You are a FANTASTIC drummer, my man! I've found the most success with mono room mics - A 57 pointed at the floor, about an inch or two up, about 8 feet or so in front of the kit. I put an amp in between as a baffle of sorts. Never got stereo rooms to do what i want, unfortunately.

@@museum1401 Yes, exactly - The amp is just there as a baffle to ensure the mic is getting indirect sound. One guy told me to make sure the distance from the room mic is 3x the distance your overheads are from the snare (so as to follow the 3 to 1 rule to mitigate phase issues). Mine isn't quite that, but it works. I intend to run some experiments with some more exact measurements later on. Also, the original reason I pointed my mic straight at the ground was to filter out some of the high end, but it also helps to keep everything in phase because my overheads are pointing straight down as well. I've tried EVERY SINGLE room mic placement imaginable with just about every mic imaginable and nothing has brought me success like the 57 arranged in this way. This is just what works for me in my room (finished basement space), mind you, though. Cheers.

just goes to show the importance of producers, engineers and studio crew in general... artists often use the scapegoat of "MP3 and mobile devices" for their albums sounding like plastic, but at the end of the day you can play any low-quality MP3 file of Led Zeppelin or Cream and you'll instantly hear the sound dynamics and quality there, it has nothing to do with "digital" or "compression"

It has. That stuff was recorded on tape with different processing than is applied today. Also analog gear sounds way better than mixing in the box.

I think that's the biggest loss in today's music scene, it has nothing to do with "labels" or "freedom", it has more to do with the fact that Producers and Engineers are often not hired and as result you have these albums full of cool compositions but sound like Lifeless Plastic 🤣take care of your product, don't cheap out, a producer/engineer is as important as a good songwriter
