I bought this knife for myself to take out to the woods when I go camping and back packing. It didn't even get a chance to make it; thank's in part to my Grandson. When my daughter came to pick him up, the boy told his mom that he and Grandpa,me, had spent the day camping in my back yard, and that we had a fire and chopped wood and every thing. That was when my daughter first saw the knife. She asked me if she could see it, and that was the end of, me, owning this knife. She instantly fell in, lust, with it; from the grip, to the weight, to the handle, the blade it's self to the length of the blade. She spent the next half hour telling me why I needed to give her this, Schrade 10. I have the ,SCHF09, and have used it a lot, so when it came down to it, the knife went home with them.

Thank you for an excellent review! You explained clearly many "technical" terms about knives, so a person NEW to outdoor knives could learn a LOT during your review of THIS SURVIVAL KNIFE. Schrade SCHF10 could be a very good choice!

I purchased this knife a few weeks ago after watching this as well as other reviews. My only complaint about it was the grip being to large for my hand making it uncomfortable to use. I remedied it by removing the grip scales and cord wrapping it. It was a bit tricky but now fits more comfortably in my hand. Very pleased with this blade after my little mod.

Great review! Last month my home was broken into and my B.o.b. was stolen and along with it most of knives and a tomahawk. Most importantly my favorite and reliable crkt windriver knife. I had the knife for more than ten years and it was my workhorse. After a lot of research and asking around I made the decision to purchase this blade before watching this video. This video confirmed my decision thank you. I didn't feel comfortable not having a reliable knife at hand.

Good and hard question... the ESSE 5 gets back to the question of whether you want a GREAT steel and knife that might rust if you are caught in a WET survival or bug out situation for an extended period of time... OR if you want a lesser but good steel that will be suitable but need a bit more care on the sharpening side but is NOT likely to oxidize - i.e. rust - if you are stuck in a 3 day downpour or have to cross a river with your gear immersed.

Hey David...I have the SCHF10 on it's way to me. It's kind of unfortunate the sheath is meant more for right hand carry. I had not noticed that. Most nylon sheaths of that kind are usually ambidextrous. Great review on the knife.

Topnotch analysis video regarding the Schrade SHF 10. Here at Alaska Raft Connection - Alaska-BushRafter, I assess lots of outdoor gear pertaining to boating Alaska’s remote waters (mild to wild). Boating-wise… I evaluate rafts, catarafts, kayaks, canoes, sportboats, and hybrid inflatables and things like solid frameworks and essential on-water accessories. Concerning camp gear… I consider items noteworthy to the achievement of a float trip venture, and what tools or equipment are trustworthy vs. letdown for a genuine wilderness self-reliance venture --- whether it be professionals or greenhorns. I positively like your examination and comparison as well as agree on personal thoughts for the Schrade SHF 10. I have put the Schrade SHF 10 through rugged practical-side of field task, and am extraordinarily satisfied with the total proficiencies and merits of the knife. It is a complete platform for its multi-role utility in an outdoor survival or bush blade. The pricing is irrefutably incredible for what this knife embodies. I’d relay that at 3-4x the price I’d still possess this highly effective and versatile ‘hybrid camp/survival blade. --- Thanks for your time - Brian PS. One of the add-ons that I commonly will do on a production knife is customize with a bit or creativity or personalize the knife &/or sheath in order to make product improvements I see as fitting my requirements. On the SCHF 10 I added: A.) On the Knife I put a lanyard in bright chartreuse reflector para cord (loop long enough to extend ‘while sheathed’ to fit securely under Velcro closure of the accessory pouch for better secondary retention B.) I installed a stainless snap kit to the Velcro that I was seeing from factory as not good enough by itself to secure the knife. C.) I used small para cord loop through the belt loop with a simple cord-lock for a third piece of retention. D.) Same reflector cord for leg line. Overall made the package much enhanced for floatplane flights and rafting. Thank you - Brian

I got this one for my Cub Scout son. He loves it, he is a larger kid as is his father! Believe me if he stays serious about the outdoors I will get him an Esee along the way. The schf3 is really impressive for the money. It might just be me but the handle is perfect, love the micarta design, exposed pommel. The steel is 7cr17Mo probably comparable to 440b or a little better. Rockwell is high at 58-60 because softer steel allows for it. Ave. edge retention, finger choil. Same sheath as the 11.

David, Nice library....oh yeah, and another exceptional review :). Love the fact that it is made of stainless steel. I really think your reviews lack detail....next time please include the lanyard hole size, the length from lanyard hole to blade tip, the cord gauge sizes from smallest to largest that will fit through said hole, and the cost of the blade if bought in a gift shop in Nepal (in Rupees, of course). Just mess'n with you :). Excellent and comprehensive as usual. Take care, Larry

I too overlooked the sheath for the knife. If the sheath had a snap and a molle strap, it'd have been perfect for around $50. I will either buy a kydex sheath on line (~$50 with mole clips and shipping) or attempt to rework the sheath with new strapping. But wow, what a knife for $50!

Yeah... I have one. The concept is good... and these Schrade ones are all one piece... It's a chunk of metal for sure. What gets me... and I told Schrade this... for some reason, someone there thought it was a good idea to put a tool kit in the hole instead of like different survival pods or kits... I think it was a missed opportunity. Anyway... Maybe I will review it sometime. But I have mixed feelings right now...

Hi David, Love your review as always! It is rare to find such thorough and comprehensive reviews. I am leaning more toward the SCHF9 due to the superior sheath. I suspend my knife upside down on my left pack strap, so sheath is very important to me. However, I do like the sleeker handle and stainless steel on the 10. Here's what I am wondering: Can I remove the handle panels from the 10 and fit them onto the 9? Alternately, will the 9's sheath effectively hold the 10? Thanks, and keep it up!

I want to ask a question, is there a name for the difference between Schrade Etreme SCHF9 and KA-BAR 7" Bowie full tang, I know the KA-BAR is an awesome knife, and I would want one in my bag in a survival situation. What I've noticed just from videos, is that KA-BAR taper the tang by about 1/2" off each side of the tang, were as the Schrade Extreme SCHF9 you can see that the tang hasn't been tapered down. Any input would be extremely appreciated. Peace out folks and stay safe.
