I have to admit, I'm a total novice when it comes to survival gear but know the BS from the real reviews when I see them. Your videos are well made and pretty much my go to point for a practical and detailed (and I mean detailed -which I REALLY appreciate) honest review. Not to mention your comparison to other products I would be oblivious to! Thanks, David! You truly have the heart of a teacher and the attention of an engineer! You rock!!

I bought each of my sons one of these which they love and I use more than them. This is a good product, sharp and great for splitting wood. I have had no problem keeping them sharp.

Very good question Robby. Gerber is huge and offers a lot of choices. They still manufacture premium gear in Portland for their tactical and military lines. But they are also smart and realize a lot has changed in the last 10 years so they market better and manufacture stuff in Asia to stay in business... and it's working for them. I do have some Gerber Gear that ends up with and on me often. LMF II, Hinderer CLS, Gator 154CM folder, the BG Hatchet in my BOB and a few more items. Thanks! ~David
@UltimateSurvivalTips11 жыл бұрын
Indeed you are right... the BG Hatchet is no comparison to these great knives... but for $33 US... the hatchet is a pretty good deal for camping and BOBs. I too would take any of your mentioned blades first... but they are in a different category all together. Thanks for the comment. ~David

Dude... relax... I'm not sure what you mean either... THE last piece of Gerber Gear I reviewed was on March 26th 2013. I have posted 14 videos since then with product from several other companies... Plus... since I get more requests to review Gerber gear than any other company... I can't ignore all of the folks that love Bear Grylls gear and Gerber. We will do our best though to represent a wider variety of brands and gear. Thanks for the comment. Much appreciated. ~David

Thanks for the review, man! I do LOVE LOVE this hatchet. I have put it to some serious use in the past couple of weeks, and it's truly an awesome tool. It has replaced my badass Coghlan's pack axe. it is SO lightweight, yet outperforms my other small heavier axes, sportsman's hatchets, etc. I want to see how this holds up over the next year.

Hey... good questions. Bear Grylls products are what they are... they are mass market gear at a good price point, that's pretty tough... designed and built to be suitable for most people. Just like a lawn mover, hammer, or vehicle, there are then products that are designed for harder and more continuous use. Like commercial, industrial use. So, in general, Bear Grylls gear is not professional gear. Can it be used by a professional, sure. But I would not classify it Pro gear.

Yes... It's very entertaining... and has some different twists... Not real high on learning survival, but very interesting to see people have to work together yet compete against each other and then have Bear have to pick the ones who get kicked off the show... interesting dynamics. What do you think about it?

I understand... but it is a good tool for the price... IMO... And if you get down to it... most gear is $5 worth of materials and the rest... well... there is a cost to doing business... I am guessing you don't have one... but no matter. Like I said, it's not for everyone. That's why I always try to give alternatives. Thanks for the comment. I appreciate your feedback more than you can know. Have a really great day! ~David

Hey bro... thanks for the comment. You can ask me directly any question you like. I am VERY available, here, on Facebook and via our website. Gerber, and specifically the BG stuff is what we get 90% of our requests from our Friends, Followers and Fans to review... So we do. It's a simple democracy here. Early on, Gerber was the only gear company to send me samples... so that's almost all I reviewed. Not so now. And NO I don't work for Gerber. If I did I'd be making more than I do now... :) David

Hey bro... it's not as bad as you think... time will tell... but I have had a great experience with it... and the Chinese wholesale sites are NOT selling the same tool. Hey... for long term storage... you don't want to mess around. To properly dehydrate and preserve nutrients the process will take 1-3 days depending on the moisture content of the food. We only use Exclibur Dehydrators... and the industrial model at that. They are around $300 US and I am a cheap skate... but this is probably one of the best investments we have made in the past 10 years. So, no... I would generally not recommend an oven. But I'm sure it can be done... folks used to use the sun :)

I have one of these hatchets. I spent 28 days in the Olympic mountains in Washington state with it. the only issue i found was after chopping many old growth tree limbs, the blade edge became distorted and wavy. but even after almost a month it was still sharp enough to cut off your hand if not careful.

Hey Jose... Funny you should ask. I just got the Downrange Propel in here last week. So far I really like it and keep my eye on it as our guys keep trying to steal it.... Haa, haa... It will be a while until I review it... but it is a VERY solid auto... great steel, S30V... quick and positive opening... very solid lock and release. Everything is solid steel on it except for the Q10 scales... which are VERY scaley (if that's a word)... a lot of grip. The multi-position clip is a VERY nice touch.

Lots of good choices here... I'd look at the Schrade Schf9 for the fixed blade... the Becker BK-2 is just a little out of your price range. Folder... hmmm... TONs of choices here... I personally carry a Gerber Hinderer CLS most of the time... and I always have a second folder on my as a backup to my backup... I am testing the Schrade SCH301, SCH302 & SCH304... pretty amazing blades for the price (like $25 US on AMazon)... and big enough to be a serious backup or primary blade.

Personally I think it is entertaining and interesting... A lot of different twists. Like Bear chooses who stays and who goes. How teams work together yet are in competition with each other. I'm glad to hear the over mold works well and saves on pain! I know all about using tools with minimal or no ergos and poorly thought out handle mat'ls. I would love to see a review of the Smith & Wesson Evasion & Extraction Tomahawk...seems there are only 2 videos on it, both are 2 minute overviews and no practical usage. I just got one, I'm in the process of evaluating it and doing real world testing and a video.

Cool. I see your point. I probably don't make myself clear that when I give a 4 or 4.5 rating to something like a BG item... I look at it not in comparison to a $90 knife or tool - but for what it is - a $30-$50 price category tool that gets you in the game. BG stuff is entry level, MM gear, a starting point for many. So, maybe I need to introduce price, class groupings for my ratings. Suggestions? That being said, there ARE a lot of great user reviews on some BG stuff. Take care Jeff. ~David

I have used the hatchet to chop up fresh squid and octopus. Then, I used the back end as a meat cleave to pound on the squid and octopus to make them lean (or else it can get hard-chewy). Due to its size, it was great.

Still can't find that fire starter that is in the intros from David's 2013 shot show at 13 seconds into video, thought I had it in the strike master but wrong handle. All this bring said... pro gear will cost you often 3 to 4 times more... there are plenty of knives, axes, and other tools that cost $100, $200 or $300... Hey David, Just curious. What do you think about Gerber and where they've come in the last 10yrs as far as the steels they use in their gear now days? Do you think their products are worth what they ask in USD? If you were to put together a three day pack that you had to put your life on, would you have any new tool made by Gerber in it? Just wondering. Thanks. Robby

when I bought the survival hatchet i liked the compact design and it was sharp as you had specified but was disapointed as it took a huge amount of effort to cut down a small tree ( 5.5 inches thick) and it did not absorb as much if any recoil from the force of the blows as my other hatchet ( Gerber ). If i had a hand in the design i would have lengthened the handle buy 3-4 inches and give it a larger swing arc that would make it a better tool. thank you for your review. it was well done.
