What do you get when you put two generations of athletic, cheeky tennis players on the same court, and remove all code of conduct?
A heated, jaw-dropping display of shot making trash talking, all wrapped up into a superb UTS match that goes down to sudden death!
Competing on Day 2 of UTS Los Angeles, Ben “The Mountain” Shelton executed a superb comeback under the lights on Saturday night, defeating Gael “La Monf” Monfils in sudden death to top Group B.
The Mountain had his chances in the opening two quarters, but a relaxed La Monf-who had already secured a spot in the Final 4-was there to whip some 20-year-old ass, and do it in style.
Racing out to a 2-0 quarter lead, Monfils won both of the opening quarters by a solitary point, 16-15 and 13-12. Just when it looked like the Los Angeles crowd would have seen the last of Ben Shelton, The Mountain found another gear, barrelling down first serves (despite having only one serve available in UTS) and whipping forehands into play around the net on a regular basis.
Winning the third and fourth quarters 17-14 and 18-14, Shelton took that momentum into sudden death and had the last laugh over a tired Monfils, powering home 2-0 when it counted.
