So overall what has better traction in sand the stock tire of the 120 tire?

I’ve been riding dirt bikes in dunes for nearly 30 years. Traction in the sand is about how much sand you can throw. Completely different than riding on dirt. You have to think of your tire as a propeller and the sand like a liquid. Forward propulsion is dependent on how much sand you can move the other way. Too large of a propeller and your motor bogs down and you go slow. Too small of a propeller and the motor raps out too quickly and you run out of RPM. The worn tire performing better is no surprise to me. The amount of traction (knobs or paddles) on a tire needs to match the hp/torque the bike can deliver. The rear tire needs to spin as fast as you can get it to go regardless of the speed of the bike. Lower gearing helps the electric motor deliver more torque and prevents the rear tire from slowing down when it bites into the ground.

Looks like you put on a new chain for the 54t sprocket Is that absolutely necessary?

Yes it was necessary to increase the length of the chain to accommodate the bigger sprocket.
