Fascinating video! It's surprising to me to not only track a shell like that, but keep it all in focus too since HS cameras normally have to use very large apertures to get enough light in which makes for a very shallow depth of field.

Yes just a matter of the lens refocusing at a predetermined rate... All you need to know to keep it in focus is where it starts, where it ends, and how fast it's going to get there. The lenses don't have to move nearly as much (in terms of mass/inertia/momentum) and can keep up much easier than an entire camera assembly

I'm wondering about the triggering of them too. I guess light beams or other triggers can be used, as long as you can synchronise them, but if you only had the firing button of a gun to trigger, it would need careful delay adjustment before the camera starts its tracking run.

When shooting explosions, a mirror is often used to protect the camera from explosion and shrapnel. The camera is located behind a reliable barrier and watches the scene through a mirror, when an explosion occurs, the mirror is often destroyed, and the camera does not receive any damage. It's a simple way, but judging by many videos, many bloggers don't know about it and as a result their cameras (often an expensive smartphone) get damaged or completely destroyed.

Maybe it was part of a test to determine how it acted if that was the case? Be useful to know how a round might look to an observer or a targeting computer if some derp doesn't put a fuse in. If you didn't know it was aerodynamically different you might "correct" for a bad round and screw up your next good one.

Jake Fuller , i believe the mirror trick was borrowed from Hollywood. They used to use a similar technique for filming a train coming head on at the camera, like in the old silent films about a damsel tied to the track,lol. place the mirror on the train track and the camera off to the side and it looks just like its gonna run you over

00:40 the “projectile” shows a full armour piercing round (APDSFS) WITH the propellant charge (the bulky part at the rear). In reality only the pointy black part would fly towards the target and deliver the kinetic energy. The sabots would discard a few hundred meters from the muzzle.

First, I wouldn't say any of those are conventional cameras. Second, the use of the mirror to track the object allowing the camera to remain stationary simply grasps the physical laws of inertia and mass. The use of the mirror simply minimizes the mass involved in the 'panning' meaning that while it is possible that a camera could 'pan' the projectile, it would be comparatively stupid to do so given the costs of constructing a contraption capable of doing so.

The way we use to capture high speed pictures of aircraft was to have a few hundred cameras lined up next to the flight path, shows some very interesting images of aircraft skins and control control surfaces.

I bought a camera in 2008 which could record in 1200 fps. So fun! I'm still waiting for something better to come out on the consumer market. Mobile phones are getting pretty close with their 960 fps in high resolution, but they are always very limited in recording time. Great video!

The worlds fastest camera at this time is can the STAMP, “sequentially timed all-optical mapping photography” it can shot a a frame rate of believe it or not, 4.4 Trillion frames per sec, google it and watch the youtube videos on it and tell me you are not impressed with a camera that can slow the individual light pulses of a laser beam ( though a coke bottle lying on its side.

Great video! Never actually give it much thought how they could get so much FPS before the digital age. I actually thought it was a present day computer morph type of thing. As in you get 2 images and morph the two and get say 10 in between (or what ever number you want). Amazing stuff, you learn something new everyday!

The "tank round" at the 0:22 mark is actually an artillery shell...and an unfused one at that. The eyebolt lifting ring is still attached. Probably wouldn't detonate on impact.

Great video its amazing what is being done with high speed cameras today. For thirty five years I worked at White Sands Missile Range and we worked with mostly Redlake cameras Hycams and Locams. The mirrored shutter of the Hycam always fascinated me.

if helium is the answer to reduce the drag in the camera, why couldn't a vacuum work better?

I guess two reasons: 1. Thermodynamics: Vacuum is not capable ofconvecting heat .. things would get really hot at these speeds; 2. Operation safety Vacuum pulls in (dirty) air in case of an unnoticed leak, Helium would just vent of that leak and would easyly be replenished from the helium tank

Another possibly is helium would still be a better match for the index of refraction for delicate optics.

they are using sealed helium instead of atmospheric air in newest high quality hard drives. It's all they need to reduce the friction they need.
