Ultra Rare: Iowa, Chicago & Eastern Leads a CP Ethanol Train in Ontario! [FPON] [HD]

In recent years the business of moving ethanol by rail has become very popular, especially on Canadian Pacific. Running from the Midwest to the Northeast, these unit trains criss-cross half the country to deliver this abundant fuel. These trains almost always yield interesting consists, from older EMDs, to subsidiary power and occasionally foreign power. However, it is very uncommon to see foreign power or ICE/DME locomotives leading these trains. Featured in this video, ICE 6448 an EMD SD40-2 is seen leading CP train 641 along the Hamilton Subdivision. What a awesome horn eh?

Central Penn Rail Productions And it looks like the buffer car was a former Milwaukee Road hopper - yet another rare treat? Canadian Pacific tends to use Soo Line hoppers as buffer cars for their unit ethanol trains and very seldom former Milwaukee Road hoppers.

Most of the CP ethanol trains originate out of various ethanol energy plants in Iowa state. The train seen here is an empty heading back to Iowa to be re-loaded.

Perhaps it is common in the US, however, in Canada these units are not allowed to *lead* trains and it is very uncommon to see.

When I worked for the CCP/DME/ICE we had trains headed to Canada all the time. Never heard anything about DME/ICE engines not being allowed to go into Canada....
