One thing I do like with fighting games is the type of interactions the characters get into. They can be funny or serious, just makes it more fitting and enjoyable

For context for Juri: The rivalry between her and Chun LI exists because in the SF4 OVA Juri was running around breaking/ killing people near a stadium and Chun LI tried to intervene but she badly lost to Juri. Resulting in Chun Li being hospitalized for a few weeks. For Cammy it's because she was part of the Shadalloo Dolls ( M Bison's personal assassins ) who aided in the drive-by that killed her mother and took her left eye. As well as arranged the live broadcasted execution of her father. For M.Bison it's because he was the one who put the hit out on her parents in the first place .

For some Sagat history. In street fighter 1 Sagat was the final boss, and for Ryu's ending, Sagat is about to kill him and Ryu hits him with a shoryukin so hard it cuts his chest and leaves a scar. Sagat promises to pay him back for the scar one day, hence him rubbing his scar saying "A promise is a promise."

Sagat is not trying to kill Ryu. Ryu loses to Sagat but Satsui no Hado is beginning to take his mind while Sagat, as a good sportsmanship, reaches for Ryu to lift him up from the ground but Ryu with Satsui no Hado under effect, Shouryuken Sagat at that moment and makes scar on Sagat's chest. Sagat learnt the truth about Satsui no Hado later on so he didn't hold grudges toward Ryu anymore and became a friendly rival to Ryu. Their promise is that they will eventually come back in the tournament and have a clean fight again after Ryu can control himself from Satsui no Hado.

So funny thing about Rufus, while he's a silly blowhard the guy is actually quite a genius in terms of martial arts. He is somewhat self-taught and went on a journey to learn real martial arts. He then took those techniques and used them to create a martial art unique to him. He is incredibly agile and flexible and can move like a man who is 2 times less his weight. Not only that but alot of the more mature and battle hardened fighters often say that if he would just shut up and lose his ego he would actually be quite a powerful fighter.

@@hdelmas1 Not just a blabbermouth but less egotistical then yes he'd give bob a most definite run for his money. Rufus' Ultra one Combo showed that he actually could do a Ki/Chi attack but he's too self-centered and fast talking to utilize it properly. Pretty much all the more serious characters said that he's quite brilliant if only he stopped talking and paid attention to outside advice as well as stopped being a blowhard. I know Ryu, and Gouken say that for sure but there are other characters who say this but I can't remember who else says this.

While Street Fighter has always had interesting stories, it has always done a terrible job telling said stories, because for some reason Capcom has always opted for a more "Arcade" type of story than an actual fully fledged developed story (and when they tried to do it with SF V... oooh boy..). However, this scene 9:17 speaks a lot to me. It's simple yet powerful if you know the context: Gouken is Ryu and Ken's master, they both trained and lived with him learning the teachings of martial arts. However, Gouken is far more important to Ryu since not only he was his master, he was the closest thing to a father and not only that, Gouken gave him the name of Ryu. Gouken was thought to be killed by Akuma at the end of the first Street Fighter game, but it turns out he was able to survive using a secret technique called "The power of emptiness" I love this scene, Ryu and his long time gone master/ father reuniting, instead of talking or saying something cliche like "I thought you were dead" all they do is acknowledge each other by their names, look at each other into the eyes, and that's all they need; they proceed to get into their combat positions as the battle drums sound on the background. No need for words, the best way for them to communicate is through their fists.

"A promise is a promise" In the first Street Fighter game the Player1 is Ryu and Sagat "The King of Darkness" is the final boss, so in Street Fighter II we are told Sagat was defeated by Ryu's Shoruyken (hence the scar on his chest) and entered SF2 tournament for a rematch. At least, this is what SF2 arcade flyer tells us. If the player chooses Sagat and beat the game with him, that rematch doesn't happen. Trusting that the US translation is correct, in SSF2 and SSF2T Sagat wants a rematch where basically he wants to kill Ryu in a death match. SF2 states Sagat wants a rematch against Ryu (so Ryu vs Sagat scene in SFIV is understandable) but it never said anything about them promising a rematch like Sagat vs Ryu SF4 scene implied. So that scene is probably referencing SF Alpha3, where we see here and there Ryu and Sagat promising each other a rematch, for example: - If we choose Sagat's path, in the end Ryu says: "Wait for me Sagat, until the day I'm worthy to be a master" - If we choose Ryu's path, Sagat says: "I welcome your challenge any time you so desire a match!" - After Evil Ryu middle boss fight, Sagat also implies that in SF1 tournament Ryu won against him fairly and wants a rematch, where he clarifies that he doesn't want a match against EvilRyu but a rematch against Ryu. (This is interesting because it goes against the hypothesis of insert Evil Ryu powers in the original SF1 boss fight and it specially contradicts the infamous 'cheap shot' rumor)

The promise between Ryu and Sagat happened way back in Street Fighter 1. Sagat got the scar on his chest because after he beat Ryu in the finals, Ryu lost control against the Dark Hadou, turned briefly into Evil Ryu, and sucker punched/Shoryuken Sagat when he wasn't looking and the match was over. This led to Sagat and Ryu making a promise to fight again when they both get stronger. Ryu when he can control his Dark Side, and Sagat when he's strong enough to beat the Dark Side regardless.

To be fair, Capcom didn't really convey the story of Street Fighter very well until Street Fighter V had a story mode. Before that, it's just bits and pieces of dialogue between some characters. With endings for each character that are limited in scope. You'd have to get the full story in supplementary material and much of that isn't all canon.

Dhalsim/Rufus: Dhalsim has finally achieved total harmony. Rufus... is Rufus. Dudley/Balrog: Dudley is the quintessential Gentleman Fighter. Balrog is the opposite of that. E. Honda/El Fuerte: Edmund is never not hungry. El Fuerte/Zangief: They spin. They fight. Fei Long/Abel: One is famous. One has amnesia but remembers movies. They fight. Gen/Chun Li: Gen is likely the fighter Kazumi saved Gouki from. He is the world's deadliest assassin. Chun-Li has history with him. Gouken/Ryu: Gouken is the brother of Gouki and Ryu's master. Though Gouki killed Gouken, by then Gouken had learned Emptiness and was literally able to will his soul out of his body, thus escaping death. Guile/Bison: This one needs no context. Guy/Rose: Rose holds a unique power to command and control Destiny, which makes her absurdly strong. She desires to end Bison's reign and set Destiny back on the path it should take. Hakan:E. Honda: Yes. Ibuki/Sakura: Ibuki is currently running away because all she has done 24/7 is train and go to school. Literally. Nothing else. Juri/M. Bison: Yes. Rufus/Ken: Rufus being the ultimate super mega ultra fighting being, his natural desire to seek out rivals. Ken has no idea who this guy is or why or where. M. Bison/Viper: Though officially Viper is supposed to arrest Bison, she's actually there to kill him. Makoto/Fei Long: Makoto can literally punch through schools. Fei Long is famous. They fight. Rose/Ryu: Rose has seen Ryu's Destiny and know he is the best hope for defeating Bison and other dark fighters. Rufus/Ken: Pretty sure Rufus has spun a few times too many. a few. Ryu/Sagat: Old Tigers learn new tricks. Ryu/Ken: just like the old days. Sagat/Ryu: "I will defeat the man who defeated me, when we are both at our strongest" Sakua/Ryu: Now the student will become the master. Seth/Abel: Seth is really REALLY bad news. Seth/Hakan: Did mention bad news? Bad news. T. Hawk/El Fuerte: T Hawk has been schooling El Fuerte for some years. Most of it sticks. Vega/Chun-Li: Vega really hates anyone with better thighs than him. really REALLY hates. Zangief/Abel: He's not wrong.

Fun Fact: M.Bison, Balrog and Vega have their names switched in Japan... Originally the Dictator was called Vega. The guy withe Claw was called Balrog. And the Boxer was called M.Bison. But capcom thought they would get in trouble due to the boxers striking resemblemce to Mike Tyson (pun intendet) especially with the names being so similar (likely an intendet reference since japanese copyright would allow such things where american copyright doesnt), so they switched the names arround thereby destroying the context for the original boxer reference... In international turnaments these three charakters are simply reffered to as Dictator, Boxer and Claw.

Starting out with the dumbest reason to fight ever. Abel tells Guile to his face, "I've seen some guy do that move before." Guile asks where said person is. Abel responds: "You have no business asking me that!" First of all Abel, yes he does, because you are the one who initiated the discussion, as you made no attempt to hide your recognition of the move. Second, why is that a reason to fight? Just spill the beans and move on with your life. The upside of this interaction is that it certainly helps me remember SF4 better.

For Rose, she's a fortune teller that shares a bit of M. Bison's soul. She's kind of his good side in a way. Just weaker overall. So she hates him and he doesn't really care about her because his M. Bison and M. Bison doesn't care about anyone.
