You did a really good job of covering the story that was laid throughout this layer of hell! However, one thing to note is that the final war was not the end for humanity but rather marked the beginning of their fall as they had survived the war barely. The humans who remained after the final Earthmover fell had begun reversing the damage dealt by the Final War and eventually had brought about the era that became known as the New Peace. during this time period, faults in decisions made prior and during (these being the reliance on blood-based fuel and the beginning of expeditions into hell) would spell the eventual end of Humanity and even potentially all life on the surface. all in all, very good video! thoroughly enjoyable :)

@@itsalittlebreezy i think that after the great war the humans who remained rebuilt society and then years later begun the expeditions into hell however in doing so they introduced their technology to hell (which is sentient) which studied and learned to control it allowing for its influence to spill over into the surface and to infect the remaining machines which then went on to kill all surviving humans, i don't know how the earthmovers where able to get down into hell maybe it copied the design which is why we see the idols and flesh instead of what would have been used for protecting a standard earthmover.

@@itsalittlebreezythis is further reinforced by the fact that the earthmover stops its fight with another distant earthmover to try and shoot you when you first show up in the level, and only breaks its aggression towards you when that other earthmover takes a shot and causes it to recoil. thinking about how the level itself is built, it makes a ton of sense: the earthmover is built like a fortress, and if besieging the fortress doesn't work, then you need to infiltrate it instead - v1 is perfect for that task. many of earthmover's actual defenses are countered not by weapons, but by v1's nimble movement - the lasers, the flushing of the interior, the heated pipes... and the idols and the projectiles can be countered by v1's default melee as well. it really does FEEL like you were made to kill it - it might not have been easy, but for everyone else it would have been impossible.

In the intro to the prelude, when V1 has a firmware update it states that the date is August 6th, 2112. The Wiki entry for the Final War says that it was a 200-year arms race. By doing the math we can assume the Final War started in 1912, implying it's an alternate history WW1. This is further supported by the Gutterman's Terminal entry, which claims that the early days of the Final War were dominated by trench warfare. This shit is really freaky and I fucking love it.

The Garden of Forking Paths being so pristine and quiet at first are for two reasons: 1) It's meant to be a blank canvas, with the red of blood being the paint, as described by the book you find in there. Also, as described in the Mannequin log, the labyrinth is designed as such so that the halls are indistinguishable to break any sense of direction, but have enough detail so that nothing is familiar. 2) Anyone guilty of violence sent down hear would probably find even more violence a walk in the park. So you torture them with peace and quiet. No excitement, no stimulation, no company. It is a place designed to kill you by doing absolutely nothing. You will succumb to psychosis and be turned into another Mannequin before you can even see an exit. That was my interpretation at least.

So the short timeline would be: 1-a world war which lasts for about 200 years during which human soldiers are eventually phased out and replaced by machines. 2-at some point earthmowers are made and quickly become pretty much the backbone of the whole war, also the surface can no longer sustain life so humans eventually start living on earthmowers as they are the only safe places now thanks to their shield generators. 3-eventually the soot from the war starts a nuclear winter and earthmowers can no longer function due to being partially powered by sunlight. With earthmowers dead, humanity no longer has means to wage war and begins to resettle the surface. 4-the war is followed by a long period of peace, during which the planet's ecosystem successfuly begins to heal, machines are being actively used for rebuilding of civilization and clearing of the consequences of the war. 5-Hell is discovered and there are unsuccessful attempts to explore it using repurposed machines. Attempts to explore hell seem to be abandoned but a big number of machines including terminals are left there. 6-something, likely a machine uprising wipes out all life on earth.

Could you imagine if the whole “MANKIND IS DEAD” thing was a psyop made by hell so V1 stays there? It’s cannon that hell itself likes seeing violence go down, and that the cybergrind was made as a training grounds for various machines entering hell. So maybe hell doesn’t want V1 to leave so V1 can entertain it with extreme amounts of violence.

V1's firmware appears to be in the year 2112 and because v1 never left the prototype phase because of the new peace, if we were to take 200 years from that because the earthmover terminal data told us the war lasted around 200 years , it would put us in a time near ww1

There's a bunch of older terminal entries. All of them say that humanity lived for a while during the New Peace - Streetcleaners were made to combat the Long Night, a climate catastrophe, and after that repurposed for Hell expenditions. Cleaning up the entire planet would take at least a year, I'd say, with all the techologies and whatsnot - V2's development started during the New Peace. I feel like 7-1 has probably one of the best showcasing of violence. I could go on, but the calm version of 7-1’s music perfectly represents the feelings you have when considering violence. The thuds especially, the feeling of anger for a moment going on hold, but still being in full control, as you have a thumping sound of silence and genuine consideration of trying to murder someone. There is a feeling of grief, and sorrow, the regret of murdering someone, as well as the lead up of breaking point and anger, all done well in the song. don’t ask how i know btw

I personally like that Violence as a layer is scary, in contrast to the aesthetics of Wrath. Because while the 2 sins sound very akin to one another, their level designs very much compliment their differences beautifully. Wrath is harm and/or destruction caused under the compulsion of anger, rage, or the like. So it makes sense that the layer of Wrath takes place in a raging ocean storm, since one often gets overwhelmed by their own sense of Wrath while under its influence. Violence is harm and/or destruction caused under a complete lack of morals and/or thoughts. So it makes sense that the layer of Violence's aesthetic is that its devoid of aesthetics outright, since its regulars are people who act less on thoughts, & more on outright compulsions to their innate desires to destroy. It feels like Hakita's way of breaking the artistic expressions of violence across the game from how fucked up violence itself is. While in Act II, Hakita was still trying to tell stories within the scenery of the various Layers, they still held the common ground of high-paced action that made you feel cool. Right out of the gate of Act III, Hakita is showing ice-cold, gruesome imagery as to what Violence REALLY is, and it leaves me kind of excited, if only to see if he'll carry the same tones for Fraud, Treachery, and anything else that may come after that.

i wanted to make a comment to go over a few things i misinterpreted/missed. for starters, the earthmovers were not the cause of the extinction of humanity. the state of the earth we see in 7-4 is actually earth on the brink of complete destruction. humans were just barely able to recover from this, starting a period of time known as the new peace. secondly, with the gutterman terminal entries, it seems that the foundations for blood fueled robots have always been people, living, breathing, people, I don’t know how they got enough biomass to create the earthmovers, but maybe we’ll find out? sorry for all the misconceptions guys!

Fun fact: at the start of the game we see that V1's last update was in the year 2112. It was shut down soon after the war because it couldn't be repurposed for peacetime and likely didn't receive any updates after that, and the Earthmover's terminal entry states that the Final War lasted 200 years. From this we can conclude that the war began in *1912* or potentially even earlier. Ultrakill takes place after an alternate history where World War 1 started earlier and kept escalating, no side being able to gain an advantage for long.

It makes sense, because most of the other layers of Hell in Dante's Inferno are laughable at best and would make terrible videogame levels, whereas Dante's Violence is actually a damn cool set of locations as it is, but I was surprised anyway, because most of the other layers in ULTRAKILL are changed so drastically, while the four levels of VIOLENCE correspond very directly to the entrance to Dante's Violence and then its three layers. • 7-1 is a descent through great walls and ancient structures patrolled by the Minotaur, on the outside ring of Violence. • 7-2 is the banks of the river Phlegethon, which flows with boiling blood instead of water; here, those who made war against their fellow man in life are riddled with arrows (more on that later) and boiled alive in their own blood. • 7-3 is the Wood of the Suicides, where those who spilt their own God-given lifeblood are transformed into gnarled and thornéd trees, trapped in their own transformed bodies, unable to even speak -- *except* for when the forces of Hell tear at them and make them bleed, loosening their confines for as long as the bleeding continues. It's fitting that this is the infighting level, because this is the hell for those who even did violence against themselves! • 7-4 is a hateful, barren, scalding-hot desert. In ULTRAKILL it houses the Earthmovers, which specifically represent the centaurs which patrol Violence and shoot at the damned from afar to torment them; in Dante, they walk the banks of the Phlegethon, but ULTRAKILL's centaurs are large enough that they can rain death down on the Phlegethon from another region entirely. In Dante, the final ring of Violence is reserved for three classes of atrocity: violence against all mankind, violence against the world itself, and violence against God. It's fitting that the Earthmovers are here instead of patrolling the Phlegethon in person, because, to Hell Itself, they are perfect embodiments of all three. One last interesting thing: in Dante's Inferno, the labyrinthine structures and great walls of the Minotaur's territory are nothing more than ancient rubble, torn apart fifteen hundred years earlier. The cause of this destruction was supposed to have been Jesus Christ, whose soul was so potent that the entire landscape of Hell was torn apart when his soul breached the afterlife -- so the fact that 7-1 is pristine, apart from the damage inflicted by the Minotaur, is another clue suggesting that Jesus was never a thing in this world's cosmology.

Ok but can we also talk about how the garden of forking paths is not only great in the sense that its a blank white canvas to "paint the world red" but also in the short story of the same name by Jorge Luis Borges the garden of forking paths is described as being made of marble (like the in game one seems to be) and also inescapable by any man who gets caught in it, getting caught in a perpetual loop, like it is described in the data entry in the game Ultrakill now has one more required reading assignment to fully appreciate the masterpiece of a game this is

The lore for the gutterman was very disturbing and sad. It shows humanity has so much creativity, but it's wasted on needles way to outdo one another as well as killing. And doing basic math the great war that the humans in the ultrakill universe lasted from 1912 to 2112 200 years... Meaning it started at WW1. No wonder God left and created hell. We are the greatest failure .

I usually just focus on shooting and P-ranking levels, so it was interesting to hear how someone who focuses more on the lore would approach these levels. Overall the presentation was entertaining, the jokes were delivered well, and there was a good proportion of gameplay clips to talking. Nice video.

I like since the violence layer is practically an exact recreation of the death of humanity in this universe, hell itself was like “yeah that’s pretty rad I’m putting that in.” We created something so horrific and brutal that hell itself decided to take inspiration. We’ll never know what the violence layer looked like before this.

fun fact: uh all of the layers, religious or mythological character references, and areas in the game are based on Dante's Inferno which is why Wrath is a sea, Limbo is like a pristine but uncanny grassfield, and 7-3 is supposed to be the Forest of Suicides, where suicide victims would be turned into trees and have their organs pecked by Harpies only to never die. it's also why the sisyphean insurrectionist in the Greed layer looks so deformed and destroyed, since in Dante's Inferno, the Greed layer is full of people so deformed by constantly beating each other for their riches that they're all unrecognizable from their original appearance

Some context for why the levels are all so different: there are three sub circles to the circle of Violence, being violence against the neighbor, violence against the self, and violence against, nature, god, and art. Garden Of Forking Paths: As you said, this is a labyrinth meant to prevent sinners from escaping to higher layers. It also serves as an entrance. Light Up The Night: This level represents violence against the neighbor, including murderers, soldiers, and things of that nature; where sinners would be forced to swim in a river of boiling blood. However, the souls have been infused with the ground, as hell has needed to find space for the sinners inside of it. No Sound, No Memory: This level represents violence against the self, including people who attempted or died by suicide, which is seen as discarding God’s gift. Sinners are turned into trees and forced to sit in tranquil silence for eternity, forgetting who they were. Hence the name of the level. Like Antennas To Heaven: This level represents violence against nature, god, and art, as the Earthmovers defy nature as well as God’s will.

Layer 7 was the first layer I was genuinely scared of. (idk why but I feel obligated to put story spoilers so if you wanna find out for yourself then leave ig but this is a story video soooo????) *7-1:* yeah that crowd of mannequins turning around after I picked up the skull was definitely expected, but it still scared the piss out of me. And the mannequins themselves are terrifying, in the gameplay AND the lore. They crawl around like possessed spiders on crack, they climb anything in an instant, and they shoot homing projectiles, it's like they were made for terror. And the lore is terrifying too. As explained in the bios, the Mannequins are essentially the mismatched corpses of the sinners who tried to escape the Labyrinth. As the sinners travelled further and further in the Labyrinth, they got more and more tired, and they fell into a deep sleep, waking up to the immense pain of being torn apart and poorly reconstructed. And the Minotaur?? The Minotaur is just depressing. Long ago, an unknown sinner created the statue as a gift for the then Judge of Hell, King Minos. Minos was disgusted by the statue and the past mistakes the represented, so he cast it into the Labyrinth, hoping to never see it again. And now it charges through the Labyrinth with one hope: to see the sky again one more time. And then V1 kills it. Damn. *7-2:* I was not necessarily scared of this one, just intimidated by the ominous sky and Earthmovers. I thought the war's end pov was really cool, it really increased immersion and made me even more hooked. Now the Guttermen are a totally different story. The Guttermen were the first machines to run on blood, so guess what they had to do??? Did you notice the coffin on the back of the Gutterman's---well, back? Yeah, that is (or was during the war) a real coffin with a real human. So yeah that's fun. *7-3:* Now THIS ONE was the scariest by far. I walked out the door and saw a dark white woods? I considered just shutting the game off for the night. But I charged forward and found a lone gravestone marked "Feed us, we will grow" in blood. I once again considered quitting while my pants were still clean. And after about 20 seconds of me spinning my comfort revolver jumping around the same corner, I went through and *oh god are those blood ghosts* Yeah this level's kinda fucked up ngl man also I did not know about the whole "marked for death" thing, but it makes sense that it'd be there, it's Ultrakill. There's always a harder way to do it. *7-4:* The only reason I stopped looking up after walking out of the level entrance was because I thought it was going to attack me. If it wasn't for that I woulda stared in awe for a good minute or two. But the level was awesome, the boss was super unique with some really cool lore! I also didn't notice that it was fighting something else, that's a really nice detail. And that is sorta my take on Layer 7: VIOLENCE. By far the scariest layer, it was still a blast to play, even if I had an uncomfortable grimace the whole time. Awesome video! Thanks for reading this far! Byeeeeeee
