FREE EBOOKLET www.sweetnaturalliving.com Travelling light is one of the key components of a pleasant trip. Meet our good friend Rob, an fruitarian ultrarunner from Canada, as he shares with us the contents of his backpack.
Lightweight travel is all about priorities, what do you REALLY need? Robert lives a minimalist lifestyle and he tells us that he could literally fit all his personal belongings in one suitcase! That's impressive! In this video he shows us everything he brought with him on his lightweight backpacking trip to Costa Rica this year.
We lived with Rob for a few weeks and he has really inspired us about the simple, minimalist lifestyle even MORE than we were already.
When you're creating your packing list, think about what you really need and also focus on bringing items that are multipurpose!
The location of your travels also play a role since the colder the climate the more clothes you need! Since we are in Costa Rica at the moment, it's tropical and there's no need for lots of clothes. What clothes do you need? Technically nothing! Culturally, a t-shirt and a shorts maybe? A pair of running sandals? The tropics is where we belong as a species and that means we don't have to worry too much about clothing.
Eating a fruit based diet like we and Rob do, there's no need to bring cooking equipment and other tools for eating as we thrive on a diet of whole, fresh fruits - staying carbed up and satisfied at all times!

This is my FAVOURITE packing video of all time! I've literally watched this over and over again thru the last few years. I always find myself coming back to get inspired from this video👏👏 I wish there was a girl like him that could show us what she brings in an ultra light pack

@DBR Liamg can make it even lighter if you cut down on the bras, 1 of the swimming suits and the jeans (never use them while traveling anyway). And I don't have an e-reader, so maybe multi-purpose my phone to read books as well ...

I love how you let him talk. I know you probably could have added to what he was saying more but it was very respectful and loving how you let him do his thing. On an unrelated note I'm obsessed with how hou say "fruit." I really enjoy your accent and also your unique mix of peacful and passionate. Thanks for all the great videos.

also in Asia I was able to leave my flyback cloths at a hotel in the city I was flying out of for $5. This saved a lot of weight. I didn't bring anything I couldn't ditch or have stolen. A large scarf or something like that is important especially when going to more conservative countries and temples. While it maybe UL going in a swim suit it may not be appropriate. I second "ditch the soap" most places don't have hot water anyway. A large brim hat is nice in the tropics. Also wet wipes that double as TP and hand sanitizer/pit cleaners. I would also add a large trash bag - bed bugs are real, I had a trash bag for my stuff when I got off the plane. everything went in there and not into my house and then to the laundry. I could also put my bag in it when in monsoon rains. If you think a little pack cover or poncho will keep your pack dry in real rain ... good luck. Sturdy shoes are important as well as slip ons. When walking in sewage flooded streets or up 200 stone temple steps you want good shoes.

You can use a few homemade things for toiletries. Salt crystal for deodorant. Cacao butter for hair, skin and lip moisturizing. Also, either a comb or hairbrush is a good idea to help distribute oils and keep hair healthy. And there are some really good soap bars available these days, that can be used to wash hair, skin, clothes, dishes, whatever. I think I would also want to find the space for a sawyer mini water filter. All in all, I think this is a really good reminder of what is important!

yeah light is nice but I would absolutely have brought a few more things- A compass..just a small one a cheap lighter... a stainless bottle instead of a plastic And a small bottle of rubbing alcohol..5 - 10 ml The reason for these things is the lighter and compass may very well save you should you become lost,and the weight is negligible. The stainless bottle can be used to cook all sorts of soups, water, spaghetti ect ect in.. The rubbing alcohol have just been handy for me to have so many times, disinfecting, cleaning, starting a small campfire and so on - And crashing under a tarp... I would probably have brought a light hammock instead, that way all the critters cant get to you as easy. Anyway that's just my experiences, and what I prefers..

Because the Smartphone serves as internet access, camera, GPS, and the lightest library and journal I've ever carried. I'm a high-fat, low-carb eater, so all I need is a rock to break nuts open. I would ditch the jeans for some 4oz Nike Men’s leggings. Faster drying and you can use them in the mountains or sleep in them. This is what I take on my ultralight travels. If you want something a bit warmer, you can go with the thermal ones for a few ounces more. I also carry a small roll of doggie poo bags. They have so many uses - from keeping hands and feet dry to carrying extra water etc. You can roll these small bags around some duct tape and then you’ve got yourself a nice ultralight multi-purpose repair kit. I also carry a few band-aids just in case - they just go in my waterproof surfer wallet. I clip a safety pin to the wallet - another useful ultralight item in case I need to dig a splinter out of my finger or pop a blister etc. I also carry an extremely tiny sponge - one side rougher than the other - good for a quick wash / scrub. I agree that you don’t need to carry a bunch of stuff - I keep dropping weight out of my pack every trip - learning to be light and free. So much better!

Very descent minimalist packing! I would be real curious to see what Robert would take to cooler climates where it's teatering around 30 at night. I'm so down with lifestyle! One carry on. Just the things you need. Just what life prescribed.
@sweetnaturalliving
@sweetnaturalliving 9 жыл бұрын
theshepard22 Yeah that would be interesting to see! But that's the thing though, Robert and us are all about living in accordance with "what life prescribed" as you say. That means tropical, not temperate, less clothes not more, fruit for food - it's minimalist since it's about minimizing the things we DON'T need :) Still though, we are adventurous and curious animals we humans, some cold weather backpacking would be interesting nevertheless!

WolfServant Yeah we do carry a camera ourselves, but Robert, just like us in the past, is on a different type of trip. Sometimes you just wanna "capture" everything in the moment, take it in, and let it go again without "collecting" and grasping, if you know what I mean? It all depends on what stage one is in at the moment. Sometimes I feel like sharing sometimes not.

Abraham Jacobson they also mentioned they'd been living together for a short while so with the stability of the home they are in they can just joirney out, collect the food they require and bring it back to the base. On the road they are mainly fruitarians so the requirements are very basic. Yano, just the odd market stall here and there and you have the food you need as opposed to ingredients for meals so to speak 😁

+nikolaj djehske WAAAAAY too big! We've travelled for years and we only use small backpacks. Sure, if you're gonna be heading to cold climates as well, you need a little more clothing, but still...30 liters should be fine, at the most! Once you go above 7-8 kg it becomes a hassle carrying it around, keep it light! We have an eBook about this, with a detailed packing list (focused predominately on tropical travel though). Check it our here: sweetnaturalliving.com/travel-ebook/

Hey :) Good questions! I don't have any particular sources of inspiration for lightweight backpacking other than the fact that it's the best way to travel! Minimalism is something I do enjoy, and for that I get some inspiration from Durianrider, Ted Carr and Thriving Minimalist on KZbin. Those are good channels overall for lifestyle advice, health and fitness, and life inspiration in general :)

I find it interesting that his big tip is to use multifunction items but almost nothing he uses is multifunction. He even goes so far as to eschew smartphones, which is the ultimate swiss army knife with limitless uses.

Seems like a very interesting guy. Do you mind sharing why and what you were doing in Costa Rica? I see that you eat fruit off the land but also buy some in, how do you afford to buy fruit out there? Were you working on a farm where the owners provided you with food and a bed in exchange for a certain amount if work per day? Are you working in Thailand now?

***** He is indeed! We are travelling the world because it's fun! We eat fruit because it's delicious and healthy. We combine the two and travel for fruit! Fruit is usually pretty cheap in the tropics so we don't spend that much actually. We make money here and there throughout the year. Sometimes we do work exchange yes.

No water treatment/filter? Go sawyer mini. A truly "multi-use" item person wouldn't knock smart phones. No one device is more multi-use that a good smart phone with user changeable batteries and a MicroSD card slot.....no, that doesn't include an i-phone. Happy travels.

Molon Labe What you say is true..but it depends on the kind of trip and the mental attitude. It's fun not to have a phone because you are more inclined to feel like you're on an adventure, you are more inclined to speak to people, ask for help etc..

Sweet Natural Living Untill quite recently, I'd have agreed with you but my mom made me think about it - as moms usually do ;) She said that while she understands my desire to be "left alone" and to experience a sense of adventure on my longer hikes, she also thinks it's selfish of me not to take a cellphone (or another suitable communication device). You see, where I live I'm lucky enough to hike in high mountains (as well as glaciers) so there is a certain risk of injuries (same as in other terrains too). So me not bringing a cellphone not only means that I voluntarily give up it's convinience. It also means that my loved ones back home will have to wait nervously for me to return before they can know if I'm alright. Without it, I won't always be able to give them a heads up if there is a delay so they would be wondering if something happened to me. So yeah, I get how a cell might take away a little of the adventure spirit but it's a small price to pay. And in the end, if you don't mind me saying, if a cellphone would "ruin" part of my experience I wasn't in the right mindset to begin with. Best wishes to you and keep on trekking ^^

Sure...there's no doubt, having a phone can be very useful. We actually do have one with us but it's an old school phone...no google maps...but it's possible to call etc for emergencies!

The internet is the most important multi-use tool ever created. If you were stranded and had the ability to use the internet, you could survive or even thrive in some of the harshest conditions on the planet. The internet is the only way we will connect our species and achieve peace. Otherwise we're just scattered groups of bacteria eating at the flesh of our host. Also, the water purifier would be a good idea.
