@@zacharygardner4476 I'm no expert on this topic but honestly I sat and watched a good handful of these videos and just went to making.. started with maple, simple crankbait with whatever parts and tools I had laying around. Just finished up my second, a swim bait of a Mahi Mahi. Used a scrap piece of pine on that, grain is hard to carve and get a solid finish. It has hard and soft spots so wouldn't recommend. Also have a cheap airbrush from harbor freight with works wonders.. that and an artist fiance to help ;) Need to get my hands on some bass or balsa next.

I just came across your vids and have been bingeing on them. As a woodworker and a fisherman they are practically tailor-made for me. You do really great work on both counts!! The lures are little works of art and speak for themselves but your videos are also really well done. Your stream-of-consciousness narrative is well-paced, upbeat and interesting which is too often not the case in KZbin videos. I think I may take a shot at making a couple myself...lures not videos, as I imagine it must be very satisfying catching fish on lures you made yourself. On the other hand, it must really suck when you lose one. Anyway, thank you for the informative entertainment and the inspiration.

You have been asking about what to make. Build my fantasy lure. We fish buzz baits for bass. And on my home lake the trick is to fish them at the right speed (normally slow enough) to make the right sound. Build a little larger Whopper popper with double blades. It would be a killer bait. Make sure it floats on its own when static like your tiny one.

You sir are an artist! I remember trying very unsuccessfully to make plugs over 45+ years ago and since I predominantly was an UL fisherman, astoundingly unsuccessfully trying to make UL lures! I think I have some inkling of how difficult it is. I remember that when the Big O came out, the handmade ones cost $100, then Cotton Cordell introduced the plastic molded 3/8 oz and 5/8 versions but I wanted a 1/8 or less style fat minnow plug. Attempts were, hideous and didn’t work. When Bagleys came out with the Honey Bee I was extremely happy. Anyway, about weighting an UL plug, I had problems with getting lead weight to stay it (this is before crazy glue of any type) I found at high cost back then tungsten wire. The benefit if I weigh out (with an old reloading scale, no highly accurate cheap electronic scales back then) sufficient tungsten wire I could drive it into the bottom of the lure. If the little lure warranted it, I could insert the weight at whatever angle it needed to ride right. I could then glue it into the lure. I could conceptualize, but not execute. I applaud your skills and abilities. As to River-to-Sea coming after you because of the Whopper Plopper, maybe because of the name, but certainly not the concept. You see, River-to-sea copied an 80+ year old design, the Mud-Puppy lure bay C.C Roberts bait company, a Wisconsin based lure company that most of their sales are local as the hand make their lures, by necessity, because their in Musky ?Country, and as necessary there lures are pretty large. The area is also river-rich so they make a smaller version which apparently is quite successful with river small-mouth and trout. Anyway, apparently River-to-Sea, basically went to China and had a lure based upon the Mud-Puppy design. Oh yeah, as it’s a big hand-made lure for musky fishing, it’s not cheap, as you might imagine. There’s another thing that might be of interest, it’s a book written by a famous writer of the 1940 through 1980’s , era Charles K. Fox, predominately fly fishing, but he’s was also a pioneer in the concept of “light lure casting” which in that era was lures less than 3/8 oz, and occasionally 1/4 oz. Before widespread the presence of spinning tackle, really not before the 1950’s lures smaller that 1/4 oz were considered “fly rod lures.” Anyway there is a book written by Fox that was published in the mid-70’s, called “the book of Lures”. While the book has its problems, it’s got pics of many lures of the day and some of them didn’t make to days age. In the text, Fox presents the idea that the industrial technology of his day would let one make lures other than was constructed by factories of the time. So, what may be the most interesting part of the book, is there is a section of the book titled “Homemade Lures” where he illustrates several of his possibly favorite lures and the steps taken to construct the lures. While the picture are just okay, the text is really good. If you would be inclined to look at the book, it’s out of print and probably not found in libraries or on-line, but can be found for sale, I think cheaply, used. I’ve found it on sale on EBay and other sites. I really look forward to seeing your work and skillful artistry.

I'm really surprised the manufacturers haven't already come up with an ultra-light version of the whopper plopper. I'm really glad to see you tackle this project. I've been drawing up models to 3D print an ultra-light version of the whopper plopper. My alternative was going to be to simply modify one of my existing ultra-light crank bait lures. It's the angle of the propeller that kind of had me stumped. Also; rather than using lead on such a small floating lure I would have probably gone with a simple BB or ball bearing. Since it's sealed inside the lure it's not likely to rust or corrode. TO soften the thin piece of plastic A heat gun works wonders with no damage to the plastic. Another well done project. I'd like to see you make an ultra-light top water frog lure. You've most likely already made a regular sized frog bait at some point. I only recently started watching your vids so maybe you already have made an ultra-light frog; I don't know.
