Preparing Composite Solid Foam Cores for Vacuum Resin Infusion

In order to use a solid foam core in a composite sandwich and then used in vacuum resin infusion it must, at the very least, have infusion holes added and have the edges beveled. In this video we prepare some foam cores and test a sparse hole pattern.

Could you explain once more exactly why you are punching holes in the foam? Is this to help the resin travel along both top and bottom fabric surfaces?

I'm sure it would be heavier than the foam material, but have you ever used Lantor Soric as a composite core? Maybe it would be useful for small curved parts.

You are right about it being heavier. So I have not even considered trying it. I do believe that it would conform to tighter and complex curves so if I needed the stiffness on those curves I would consider it. Thanks!

Can that pink panther foam board be used as a core?

It has been used as a core on a lot of airplanes. I prefer not to use it in a sandwich since it has a higher tendency to de-laminate.

Something it's wrong , probably you should change the flow media

I'm going to do some more testing with this setup to see if I can make it work. Flow media is of the things I'll test.

It was dry because it went to fast

Kind of. This was an experiment. I usually halt the resin flow when it gets near the far edge of the foam core and let it set/soak for 5 minutes before resuming the flow to the end. This time I skipped the 5 minute pause to see how well the resin would flow. The actual rate of flow for the rest of the part very slow. About 1/2 inch per minute.
