Mark, one other setting that you may want to call out is the MON level that you get to when you tap the AF Gain/Mon knob. Mine was set for 3 for some reason and turning it down to zero prevented the transmit signal from feeding back. Also, for older iPhones, you can get a lightning adapter with audio in and out but make sure it's line in and not mic in. Conrad, N2YCH

Great overview! As for the splitter, I like to think about it in terms of what the phone is doing. When transmitting, the phone is sending out audio, so the audio plug goes to the which would go to the mic jack on the kx2. When the phone is listening it is receiving audio, so its microphone plug needs to hear that from earbud jack of the kx2. Did I just make that more complicated?
@SOTA-plus Жыл бұрын
Nope - that's a great clarification!

Motivation for doing the multiple adapters is that I can use the same TRS/TRS splitter for my earbuds with the mic, which cuts down on weight just a bit.

@@SOTA-plus That's really helpful, because it's smaller and lighter than both the mic/speaker options I have now. This also looks like it should work with 2 cables (USB-C to 3.5mm and 3.5mm to splitter) and a MacBook instead of an iPhone. For little cost and space. I have to try it. N8JSM

Thanks for the video! Here are some additional tips that I've learned after some struggle.... Disconnect the splitter, then plug in the USB-C cable into the phone, then the splitter into the KX2, and then connect the two. For some reason the app would use the internal mic if not done this way. If you're not triggering VOX, try going into SSB mode, then back to DATA A mode. Also ensure that VOX mode is on after turning it off and back on again... ask me how I know.

Instead of the USB-C to TRRS adapter, I used the Apple "Lightning to 3.5mm Headphone Jack" adapter and I was able to make this work with my iPhone 12. I just made a 20m FT8 QSO with the suggested settings. I am still trying to figure out the optimal Mic Gain setting on the rig but this works fine on an older iPhone with a lightning connector instead of USB-C. So far I am not having any luck getting this to work on my iPad Air, with USB-C. The only difference is that I am using the recommended USB-C to TRRS adaptor. I am seeing signals on the waterfall and decoding them but I am not triggering the VOX, so more experimentation needed. I guess the first step will be to verify that the USB-C to TRRS adaptor is ok since that is the only difference in cabling as compared to my iPhone setup, which is working. - Michael VE3WMB
@wmb229210 ай бұрын
My second attempt with my iPad Air worked just fine with the USB-C to TRRS adaptor so I am assuming I just didn't have the cable seated properly the first time. Another good trick is to use the per band Quick Memories on the KX2 to save the FT4 and FT8 frequencies. Quick memory will even remember the Data mode and other settings so it is perfect for this application. - VE3WMB

Mark, thanks for the video. I have been wanting to experiment with some FT8 on my KX2. I seem to be having one problem however. Everything seems to work only if I unplug the jack going into the phones plug so the audio from the KX2 comes from the speaker. With this configuration the iPhone app decodes and will transmit via the MIC input. I have made one qso confirming it works this way. But when I plug the mic cable into the PHONES port of the kx2, the iPhone stops decoding. I'm wondering if this could be an iphone setting, a kx2 setting or perhaps a bad cable? Wondering if you might have any incite. BTW: Thanks for all the SOTA contacts. You are in my log at least 20 times.

Hey Peter - you & NT6E were the first callsigns I learned to recognize as words! Thanks for all the hunts. The configuration you're describing is acoustic coupling - that'll work, but it's not convenient on a windy summit. Bad cable is always an option, but let's try configuration mods first. I'm assuming you've tried plugging headphones into the PHONES port & verified that audio comes out of the KX2? You've got the MIC cable from the phone plugged into the PHONES port, and the PHONES cable from the phone plugged into the MIC port, right? Can you try this sequence? 1 - Check that these settings are configured: Mic Bias OFF, Monitor OFF, Mic Button OFF, Vox ON 2 - Unplug all the cables 3 - Restart the iPhone 4 - Set the iPhone volume to mute, and then increase by one click of the volume button (should be ~5% on the phone's volume indicator) 5 - Set the KX2 volume to a low value 6 - Plug in the connectors (Remember: Mic --> Phones, Phones --> Mic) 7 - Adjust the ALC to 5 bars

Im using iPhone 14 with a KX2. It recieves phenomenal, but cannot get a signal out. The software will trigger the transmitter in the KX2 every time, but IO cannot get the ALC up, currently have no bars. Phone volume is all the way up as far as I know. Any thoughts???
@SOTA-plus11 ай бұрын
That phone volume all the way up could be your issue! I've had the same problem when I was running the KX2 off my laptop using a sound card adapter - it occurred when my input audio levels were *too high*. The KX2 has over drive protection on the MIC input, and - if it sees an MIC input level that is too high, the KX2 will shut off the input until it is reduced. If you've got a second radio (I use an X6100 that's laying around the house) then you can use it to monitor your KX2 transmitting into a dummy load by putting it close by - no antenna even needed. That's a great way to check that your TX audio is working, and then you can increase the volume to get that ALC dialed into the 4-5 bar level. Also, just double check that you've got the mic bias turned to off - that can really cause an issue if you forget. Let me know what you figure out!

My iPhone 11 Pro Max with iOS 17.3.1 is looping the radio audio input back out to the radio. How does one configure iOS to not loop the radio audio out back to the radio? de AC7PB

That’s a new one! You don’t happen to have your radio set to monitor the TX audio, do you? That would do what you’re seeing.

This is happening in the phone. I have the mic cable plugged into PHONES on the radio and the speaker cable plugged into an external speaker. I can hear the FT8 coming out the speaker while in Listen mode. This was my troubleshooting setup after finding the radio was constantly in TX when the speaker cable was plugged into MIC. (Note: I’m using KX3 and iPhone 11 so I have a Lightning to TRRS adapter.) In Windows, I would just go to the output mixer and mute the mic to solve this scenario.
