Damn, man. Your assemblies from what-have-you vintage parts come together into something truly groovy. An ageless bike. Classic French bits, 80s and 90s MTB and tires from the future. Love that compact double up front, I'm running a 44-26 on my Hillborne with an 11-32 seven-speed. I tried looking for ball-end grips and found some from Murray... along with a pointed version that looks like a butt//plug 🥴

44/26 front chainset ? Ive wanted to go with this ratio but always wondered how going 18 tooth difference would affect the FD shifting ? Most FD have 16t capacity. .. need some input from pappi himself

How's the shifting on the front chainrings? I want to go ultra-wide like that, but don't have the parts to just test it out myself. I have heard FDs don't like to go more than ~16t difference
@nickmasters84742 жыл бұрын
I've used triple cranks to make wide range doubles (big ring on middle position, granny on inner), 50/30, 46/28, 42/24, and currently 42/28. I've never had any problems ever setting this up on multiple bikes. It works super well. That said, I don't like too big of a jump (hence switching to 42/28). It feels like the floor goes out from under you if you shift something like 42/24. It also can make you reluctant to shift when you know you only need one more gear down (or up), because you know you'll likely need to double shift (front and rear). In my case, it just made me think too much about what I was doing and whether or not I wanted to shift. I find 42/28 to be very reasonable - it's still a big jump, but not too big. But again, from a technical standpoint, in my experience, all kinds of derailers have been able to easily handle 18t of difference. I wouldn't hesitate to try it if you want to.
@zroeder2 жыл бұрын
I've had the chain jam between my frame and crankset with a >16t difference. My small chainring is just close enough to my chainstay for this to be possible. But it still works great for me if I am careful not to shift under too much load. Using a friction shifter helps too. I would not recommend this setup for any sort of racing. Using a wide double like this, I find that I shift the front derailleur less often anyways. On my bike, I'm in the big ring almost all of the time, and then I shift to the small ring only when I'm on steeper fireroads & singletrack. So, I almost think of it as having two different 1x setups with the benefit of having 1 & 2 tooth jumps on the rear cassette. And parts are inexpensive with the exception of the crankset.

I too have 20T and 18T deltas. 44/24 and 44/26. No prob. How you use them is a little different tho.
@ericmarth2 жыл бұрын
When I installed my first 44/26 I was worried the front mech couldn't handle the jump. It also didn't look right. Seemed I had to set it way too high. But it works fine. Running a Suntour Cyclone with a SunXCD crank and TA rings. Also worked with a Suntour ARX.

I really appreciate the iterative design changes over time on this bike. Tubing diameter changes, thickness changes. The smaller frames being SD... Thanks!
@bryanflo45002 жыл бұрын
what does SD mean in this context? thanks!
@ultraromance2 жыл бұрын
Standard Diameter (normal in tymes of yore) rather than oversized tubing (normal for today). we use lighter and more flexible "SD" tubing in the smaller sizes as a smaller triangle is inherently stiffer, and the rider is lighter. cheers, and thanks!
