Thank you for more of this on the Weddell seals. Beautiful and very inspiring. Much appreciate the longer video/audio recordings you've shared too. I wish there was an archive available to access all of this rich material you've captured -- similar to the years of Lars Kindermann's PALAOA recordings still available on the PANGAEA database from that old audio livestream which used to be up.

Thanks Ben, We will try to set up a streaming/replay archive of this audio at some point. It is, unfortunately, a huge dataset which is expensive to host and manage on an academic budget.

Необыкновенно, красиво, таинственно, космически! Спасибо за записи!

Its amazing you can see how similar their calls are to military sonar. The spectrogram looks similar you can see continuous waveform pulses and freq shifted. A CW/FM pulse is the most common ranging and targeting pulse you use when submerged.

There you heard several different frequencies which paint slightly different echoes depending on depth, distance, etc. But have you ever heard the ‘ping’ of a Weddell Seal? The best description I can think of is ‘infinitely variable frequency’. Maybe the water appears as clear as air does to us.

Why would you need permission to use the sound of animal?

@@mirandapanda5439 Recordings are the work of those who recorded them. It is good practice to obtain permission to use them, just like photos and video.

Can you try and research other seals species and the sounds they make?

Yes, it would be nice. Leopard seal, too, can produce high frequency sounds.
