How does NIPT work?
NIPT works by analysing the DNA of the baby that is circulating in the mother's bloodstream. This cell-free DNA, or cfDNA, is shed from the placenta during pregnancy. NIPT can screen for Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome and Patau syndrome.
How is NIPT performed?
NIPT is a simple blood test that can be performed as early as 10 weeks of pregnancy. The blood test is drawn from the mother's arm.NIPT is a safe and painless test. There are no known risks associated with NIPT.
Is NIPT accurate?
NIPT is very accurate. It has a high sensitivity, which means that it is good at detecting fetuses with chromosomal abnormalities. NIPT also has a low false positive rate, which means that it is unlikely to give a positive result when the fetus does not actually have a chromosomal abnormality.
What if my NIPT results are positive?
If your NIPT results are positive, it does not mean that your baby definitely has a chromosomal abnormality. However, it does mean that there is an increased risk. You will need to have further testing, such as amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling, to confirm the results.
