_Bergtatt_ is about a young girl that gets lots in the forest, and is subsequently spied upon and captured by malign faeries, trolls and some such. She is then carried away into the mountains, never to be seen again. It's a classical theme in Scandinavian folklore, really.
@AVS_6
@AVS_6 5 жыл бұрын
We noticed they enjoyed a lot about folk theme on lyrics and the song too. I would like to recommend readings about that fairytale to them. Read about these folklore, dudes. It's easy to find about it. Keys: Huldra, Theodor Kittelsen, Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe PS.: The chorus is a piece of norwegian poem indeed. You can find it also in the song Nagellstev, from Storm (another norwegian band).

The really interesting thing with Ulver is that their Black Metal albums can almost be considered a phase for the band. They’ve written more albums as an experimental rock band than anything else. Both styles of the band are held in high regard.

AND FINALLY!! Someone reacts to Ulver's first album, which is regarded as one of the greatest second wave releases to date. Those guys were around 17 at the time... And the clean vocals were pretty special back then. Overall, their folklore themes and "blurry" sound were a great example to black metal, which doesn't have to deal with satanic lyrics and stuff like that. Needless to say, if you like this song, then you'l like Captiel I (The first song on the album. Talks about a Christian girl lost in a troll forest).

If you enjoy this kind of black metal, you will LOVE Alcest. Their entire concept is built around an experience the vocalist/frontman had as a child. He had what he can only describe as a near death experience, where he found himself in another place so beautiful surrounded by beings of light. Their music is his attempts at putting across how this place feels and has impacted him. Their music is so ethereal and painfully beautiful at times. Give them a try! Someone previously suggested Ecailles de Lune part 1 & 2, give it a go! 💙

I know in the TK alliance there have been times where we thought you wouldn’t like a song and you’ve surprised us when you did. Darkthrone (Halloween episode) and Electric Wizard come to mind for those scenarios. As far as picking songs we generally focus on a sub genre for a vote. Sometimes we’ll get really specific and do a more niche sub genre because we want to expose you to a variety of styles (for example we’ve done votes for only Atmospheric Black Metal songs, and only Black/Death Metal songs). The votes are usually long enough that if people want to try to convince others to change their vote they can make the attempt.

Man, feels like ages ago when I was asked to translate the lyrics for you guys :P But awesome to see the reaction finally!! :D Ulver (wolves) is just epicness in musical form.. and they were for sure not quite like the other bands of the time. The Gregorian style isn't found much in Norway, there's of course church choirs.. but further back in time the folk songs of Norway were done a bit like this, the Gregorian style-ish. Which is something Ulver really took into their metal.. so to us up here, it's more "Norwegian folk song influence". (But I guess that in turn could've been inspired by the monks coming to Scandinavia in the viking times)

I was studying in Danmark for graphic design. One of our tasks was to make up a micro-brewery and design some beer bottles. I did a design based on this album. I designed five bottles based on the five chapters of the story so you would get the whole fairytale if you bought them all. Good times. One of our other tasks on another assignment was to make a website with audio and some visuals. I read the story out and made some poor audio foley to go with the story and sung some parts of it with some illustrations of the story, so it was like a poorly made visual novel. Good times

This album is based on norwegian folk tales, where women alone at night might be snatched away by those who live within the mointain. If you ever wondered what Griegs "The Hall of the Mountain King" was referring to, it's the same story. It probably stems from pagan beliefs in elves, spirits and giants that live in mountains, trolls spring from the same source. My mom tells me her grandmother always warned of the dangers that come if you offend "the ones who live under the earth", and they would perform customs such as shouting a warning before pouring water on the earth or knocking when enterting an empty house, since the "others" often squat in empty buildings. There is a facinating amount of stories and lore relating to these beliefs.

It would be hilarious to see you react to what came after for Ulver, without knowing beforehand... but then again, you'd probably dislike it, so instead I'll just say this, I know you're busy as fuck, with work, the channel, kids, and a baby on the way, but when you have 5 minutes, just listen to a few minutes of something like the first track ("Lost in Moments") from their 2000 record "Perdition City", and then something like "Transverberation" from 2017's "The Assassination of Julius Cesar". You'd never guess that's the same band, if you didn't have "Ulver" written there. And that's what I like about Ulver, because I don't really care for "second wave of Norwegian Black Metal", although I much prefer this to Mayhem and co, since this is like an early blueprint to what Agalloch would become, and that's one of my favorite bands.

Sure, that's technically correct, however, I chose to translate the lyric the way I did because it gives more justice to the poetic nature of the dano-norwegian text. "The sun goes down behind the hill" is a literal translation, but it loses it's poetic depth. "The sun set beneath the hillside", isn't something one would use in daily conversation. I just wanted to preserve the poetry.

You have to check out their cover of Black Sabbath's "Solitude"... I think that is better than the original so far!

interesting to see your reaction on a cult band from my homeland :) ulver has been through a lot of changes up through the years. they are still active. but now as a electronic ambient group . Beeing from norway, i have had the luxury of growing up with some of the best ABM in the world close by. there is tons and tons of really good bands from here. bud for my part, my favorite band is Dødheimsgard (DHG) , they have a song called Aphelion Void wich is not possible to describe. you seriously need to chech that out.

Ulver are such a great band, and this is one of my top albums of all time. And the first song Capitel I is one of my favorite songs of all time, but Capitel II is fantastic as well. You should know that it is a concept album, and it's a great story but it isn't as deep as you two were trying to go with in your thoughts on the lyrics. It's a story about a girl that hears beautiful voices in the woods calling her in (Capitel I), and then it is about the sun setting and her getting lost in the woods (Capitel II) and then the beautiful voices that called her in turn into monsters and trolls at night, and the rest of the album is her journey to escape and get back to her family...spoiler, she doesn't escape. As the night goes deeper the album becomes less beautiful.

Iirc she doesn't try to escape. They trick her, telling her that they'll guide her out of the forest and she makes the mistake of trusting them. They then lead her deeper into the forest and finally pull her into the mountain where she is petrified, never to be seen again.
