A lot of the younger fighters in Khabib’s camp (Umar’s age and younger) are predominantly strikers. The current head coach in Nurmagomedov School is muay thai based, and their striking coach is TKD based - you can be sure we’ll be seeing more and more well rounded fighters from that team in the future.

Umar circles the "wrong" way in southpaw because that lines up his push-kick with his opponent. He's not setting up his left-hand straight from that stance, which is what fighters normally try to do. Cory's transitions from offense to defense will be the key, I think. Umar is a more dynamic striker, but Cory excels at executing the basics really well.

I like that he stopped after the only hammer fist. He knew the guy was out and was checking on him. A gentle soul and a warrior no doubt about that. He's got the touch of death, he switches stances to suit his attacks, and he knows when to counter. Sandman is gonna have his hands full with Umar. If one of them gets caught it would be an upset.

It's crazy that Umar had enough power in that check hook to know him out. His knee was still up. I can't say I've even seen that before. Those type of check hooks or slaps or even backhanded slaps are more often a way to score a point or mostly to blind the opponent and keep them from taking advantage of that open position. I personally never seen this before, but I can't say I've seen all the fights. I wish some one with some knowledge would comment on this.

The dagestanis are being trained in standup by Javier Mendez. Khabib first hooked up with him at AKA and brought him all the rest. You can see a progression from khabib's striking which was crude, then islam is more refined and now umar and usman are even better. This has to do with how long and from how young they started with Mendez who deserves credit along with father nurmagomedov

Umar's combat sambo is the reason he will win. He's not a wrestler but a grappler whose wrestling came last. He's more similar to Merab despite the Muay Thai element. The only difference is he can hold people down which Merab can't. This fight will be more similar to Belal vs Leon or Khabib vs Barbosa.
