JNU student Umar Khalid, who had been jailed on sedition charges returned to the JNU campus on 18 March 2016 following the grant of six months' interim bail by the Patiala House court in Delhi. He said that he has no regrets of being jailed and was rather proud of being booked under sedition charges.

He'd gone to jail for protesting against the judicial system and the excesses by the security forces. Slogans like : Saza e maut ko radd karo Kashmir ke naujavano sangharsh karo Tum kitne Afzal maroge, har ghar se Afzal niklega Indian army pe halla bol CRPF pe halla bol These slogans got him into trouble. Yeah but he did not raise Bharat ki barbadi slogans. To understand this perspective, try reading about the excesses of the security forces in tribal areas or Kashmir. There have been torture cases, rapes used in interrogation etc. We need to mend our laws and judiciary for proper justice. And there's a whole section of society which believes that Afzal was not given proper judicial representation, and punished unfairly. On top of that, his family was not allowed to have a proper burial. Many believe Afzal was hastily convicted to protect certain influential politicians. Hence "Tum kitne Afzal maroge".
