While gas-pistons (also known as gas springs and gas rams) were originally touted as beneficial for airgun hunting since you can leave your gun cocked without fatiguing a metal spring, that's not the only reason you'd want a gas piston. Anyone who enjoys a smooth spring rifle should try a gun with a gas piston. Once you do, you won't ever want to go back to a gun with a metal spring!

Brand new for 2013 Umarex Octane is the first Reaxis gas spring air rifle Paul reviews this year. More than enough power!

I've testing a Umarex Octane cal 177 and I have to say it's great. Powerful, silent and accurate. However, the scope is very, VERY, cheap and you should either go with the already installed fiber optics sights or get a better quality scope. A little bit on the heavy side but other than this two issues a good rifle altogether. Great for backyard use. Umarex by the way has great support and have been there to help me out with any issue.

Hi Glen, velocity is usually stated at the highest possible FPS. As stated on our website, 1450 fps w/alloy pellets, 1250 fps w/lead pellets. Also, the heavier the pellet, the lower the FPS, and in this video a very heavy pellet was used. Thanks, Pyramyd Air Team

Great review; One point that I have to make here is that I heard back round music being played while conducting the Sound Test - firing the gun. A noise free review while the gun is being fired could give a much clear review of just how loud or quiet the gun really fires. I have a large Ruger Air Magnum and I am sure it "Thumps" louder out of the Piston than this rifle. I fire sub sonic grains - over 21 grains. Just was hoping someone could really point how quiet the reaction is of the Piston pushing the Air to the Pellet. Thanks

I don't have the 135. However, I do have the .22 cal Hatsan 125TH. I spent many hours shooting and evaluating it. The mechanics are rough, and there is a good amount of discoloration and rust on the metal parts. I could not get satisfactory groups at 25, 20, and 15 yards, despite feeding it 9 types of pellets, many of which have worked on my other magnum spring rifles. I tried different holds and trigger controls, with little or no success. Your experience may be better. Good Luck!

Okay, I am going to say it. I have owned and shot my share of gas piston break barrels, and I must say, this is by far the best gas rammed bb I have yet had the pleasure to own and shoot. A solid, silent, and strong shooter.

Joshua, the .22 is going to have the knock down power for game up to the size of raccoon & rabbit. It all depends on the type of quarry you're interested in. .177 is plenty for birds and squirrel.

a gas ram has a fast lock time ,but a good spring can be cocked for long times to , ive once cocked for testing a diana 350 magnum ,let it be for 3 months not much power loss.and a gas ram can get leak like a spring can break ,and most of the time you need more cocking effort with the ram for the same power output , and the mass and of the spring wil help to mantain the piston at the peak pressure longer, thats why a springer can be stronger with the same effort as a gas ram

nice review, I'm thinking this Octane will be a good choice in .22 cal and then for the .25 I think I will go with the Hatsan 125 Sniper, i enjoy my PCP .22 rifle but the springer is so much less hassle in the field, so I'll always enjoy the springers...

Hi im looking into getting a new air rifle. and ive been really considering the hatsan 125 .25 but now, after looking at the octane .22 i maybe rethinking. I am very familar with shooting air guns, but i hunt small to medium game. From squirrels up to foxes and coyotes. Would the octane get the job done at 50 to 60 yrds or would it be better to go with the hatsan .25? Thanks
@MrAbcdefghijklm1nop
@MrAbcdefghijklm1nop 9 жыл бұрын
***** I wouldn't get the hatsan 125 .25 i have it an it is very inaccurate the spring makes the recoil insane so it's very hard to get any type of good grouping. Im waiting for my octane to come in the mail hoping to get better results from this gun. Because i used the hatsan 125 for hunting squirrels and it definitely has the power but the accuracy just isn't there.

@MrAbcdefghijklm1nop 9 жыл бұрын
***** No I haven't tried the webley but my hatsan is the 125th version and I agree I prefer the thumb hole. I could have just gotten a bad hatsan 125 or I may be shooting the gun incorrectly or something but I just can't get a good grouping at 20 yards. The power is definitely there though it goes clean through thick steel fuel cans front and back and slams into ply wood behind it.

I do not understand how having MORE mass moving in the chamber can possibly reduce recoil or increase velocity. Maybe some engineer can explain for us how that equates.
@whiff1962
@whiff1962 10 жыл бұрын
I am no engineer, but as far as giving more mass to the end moving the piston, I would think that adding that extra mass (weight) would decrease the amount residual air that would act as a cushion, thus causing the piston to rebound? Most of the mass in the strut would be where most of the metal and other materials are found, and so, launching this end of the gas spring is going to give more power.

I have the Ruger Blackhawk Elite (same as surge but with licensing from Ruger) and I enjoy it and can shoot it all day, but it is on the louder side. So if you live in a place where you're neighbors complain about noise pollution a lot then get the octane as it is much quieter (say 24x if you go by how db work). That's just my opinion and really it's all up to you

pyramydair + I've stored my .22 Benjamin Prowler cocked, and near the screenless window, ready for tunneling pests, for a year, firing occasionally. It hasn't lost velocity. A formula 1 car engineer, Smith, wrote that a correctly mfgd spring will never wear out. Automobile valve springs last 200,000 + miles, set for months under strain, yet perform within tolerances. I've left my spring-powered Winchester Daisy cocked for months. Something is fishy about the claims against air rifle springs. Were they all mfgd by American Motors in 1965? And if, against all odds, all these springs are defective, what an opportunity for a spring mfg company. Has anyone done a survey of many existing guns? A comprehensive spring cycle test?

+Randeep Kang Kang Yeah, I've purchased the Benjamin Trail NP2 and find it to be a fine air rifle, but however it seems to loose zero and accuracy at times. Its very quite and the trigger takes some getting used to. I've had different scopes on it and the results were the same. The Walther Terrus .22 however is an excellent gun by far. You may purchase it at Walmart.com in the US for $190 to $240 depending on your selection. It will not disappoint. Easy to load and stays on target, it's quite a tact driver. May have less power than most rifles, but what is power if you can't hit the target. Has enough power to take down small game such as rabbits, and squirrels out to 35 yards or more. Invest in a good scope, cause this gun deserves it.

Thats funny him talking about that air riffle having so much recoil it might throw the scope off lol I use a shooter's edge 50mm witch is 69 bucks never failed me so this air gun must have more recoil than my 300 or it is a really really cheap scope
@mapbike
@mapbike 11 жыл бұрын
Spring and Nitro piston powered air rifle are much harder on scopes than most center fire rifles, springer air rifles jerk the scope backwards and then forward very quickly and that is why even some of the high end firearm scope can be trashed on an air rifle, they aren't designed for the type of recoil springer type air guns put on a scope.
@stephenjray1988
@stephenjray1988 11 жыл бұрын
Well i just can't see how it would jerk the scope more than a big caliber center fire. They will come up with a air riffle scope if they haven't already just like they do for shotgun and muzzle loading guns just so the customer will spend more money thinking he needs one their are no differences unless you get a mill dot scope that is calibrated for the velocity for a one of them i don't believe any of that stuff to be honest with you we have shot Bushnell Leopold and now shooting shooters edge and by far the best scope for money their on my 300 .50 cal muzzle loader with magnum load and slug gun with 3" magnum shells just find it hard to believe that a air gun is harder than a center fire' shot gun , muzzle loading.
@ScuffedEngineer
@ScuffedEngineer 10 жыл бұрын
stephenjray1988 It's very strange yes but airguns destroy scopes in a special way. The bundled scope I got with my break barrel air gun the Teflon coating on it had come off from the scope rings moving forward and the ring that keeps the rear lens in place had been moved. Air guns vibrate when shot, move backwards then forwards and cause scopes to move and vibrate like they aren't built for unless they are shock proof. So you can get a "air gun" scope for about 70 bucks or 80
