Hello everyone! in this video I show how to make the clay structure of a cup using the slab building technique (To be able to use it, you must fire it... and glaze it)
This is one of the techniques that I enjoy the most and the one that I find most useful
(the cup is 8 cm high and its walls are 6 mm thick. The circle that I cut for the base has a diameter of 6 cm)
Materials used in this video:
-White low fire clay (1040°)
-Slip
-Water
-Sponge
-Cardboard
-Wooden rolling pin
-6 mm/8 mm thick rods
-Rib
-Needle tool
-Cutter
-Rule
-Brushes
-Spatula
-Plastic letters

*Some general answers:* -I got the plastic letters at a bakery supply store, originally they are to write on cookies -The liquid clay is called slip, and it is made of clay + water - In this video I only show how to make the structure of the cup, in order to drink from it... it must be fired and glazed. Soon I will make a video showing in detail the glaze process!

@@UmiCeramics just a note from one potter to another you cannot say someting is food safe unless it has been sent to a lab to test. Uneven firing, some clay materials and some colourants may not be food safe under certain conditions. Some ready made glazes will say food safe on them but that is only on the basis that you follow their firing schedule and clay body to the letter. In this day and age of suing and compensation i would be very careful of saying something is food safe once glazed and fired.

Air pockets don't cause pieces to burst in the kiln. A piece will burst when it has not been fully dried and it is fired. This is seen more commonly with pieces that have air pockets because it takes them much longer to dry, and they are put in a kiln before they're ready. Here's a video by Pottery to the People that explains and tests this myth: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gWXTY6V6rNqIh7M
