I used to think that Kanon&Shannon vs Maria from Episode 6 wasn't cool, powerful, meaningful etc enough to warrant bringing back this theme given just how immensely glorious its usage was in the Virgilia vs Beatrice fight from Episode 3, but it makes plenty of sense once you go back to it the second time around, after you've figured everything out. Doubly so if you'd already figured it out the first time by this point without having the game spell it out for you. The fight is basically an emotional treat for those who have done as RK07 wanted and thought for themselves enough to figure out The Secret (TM) on their own. (obvious spoilers below) For one, even without figuring that stuff out, by this point we already know everything there is to know about the daughter-mother relationship between Maria and Rosa. Yeah, Maria's had some seriously dark thoughts about it all, to the point of fantasizing about killing her (and not unjustly either given what the poor girl has been through). Yeah, Rosa absolutely resents her existence (to the point of abusing her) because it reminds her of how her man abandoned her and left her with nothing but a huge debt and Maria herself, and it especially reminds her of how helpless she is given her siblings' disdain and the fact that she has to raise Maria on her own on top of all the stress she's accumulated. But above all else, they still love another. It's twisted, it's complicated, it's heartwrenching. But they still love each other. The last thing either of them want is for someone else to harm the other. If she lost her daughter, Rosa would be left with nothing but darkness and despair in her heart. But Maria? After losing her mother? She has *absolutely nothing*. Literally the only thing that makes this in any way better is that Maria doesn't know The Secret (TM) at this point, AKA Kanon = Shannon = Beatrice = Sayo = Maria's lifelong best friend, the one who's taught her everything about magic and who was one of only two lights left in this world for her. And now that light has just snuffed out the other one. Sayo's literally stuck in a closed room with a cornered beast that has nothing to lose. A cornered beast that *she knows everything about*. It's precisely that knowledge that allowed her to discard Maria as being unimportant in this stage of the love trial... and it's precisely that knowledge that's come back to bite her in the ass, and it therefore comes as no surprise that Maria is, for even just the briefest of moments, able to overpower her. That moment, brief as it may be, completely justifies the use of this song, because Maria's avenging wrath, with all the information we've gathered, all but eclipses the fun factor of the Virgilia vs Beatrice fight.

Very interesting thoughts. Do you think Maria actually saw Rosa's 'corpse' and physically attacked Sayo, and the Love Trial interpretation is just Sayo just trying to convince Maria of what she's doing?

@@helpmakar7168 Sayo straight up points out that she doesn't want more victims than needed for that phase of the trial, so she did not in any way account for Maria noticing anything just yet, or at least reacting the way she did and thus needing to kill her too. After all, this is the same Sayo that's been friends with Maria for a *very* long time, and the same Sayo who got Maria to repeatedly torture and kill her own mother in her mind in a previous episode, so at the absolute most Sayo expected Maria to be happy about it. The fight between them, while obviously fantastical in nature (as is always the case with witches), also goes out of its way in the VN to explicitly point out Maria throwing a flurry of punches. By that point in the story we know that everything that is fantastical in nature is either an embellishment of the truth or straight up false and the result of an unreliable narrator, but... punching? That doesn't strike me as something a witch would do, but it absolutely strikes me as something a 9y/o who's just seen her mother be killed before her eyes would do, so yes, I'm fairly sure she did attack Sayo.

I just interpreted it as Rosa legitimately being out cold for a bit as part of the plan, as she'd obviously have reacted if she was conscious at the time. It wouldn't surprise me if Sayo learned how to do this from Genji. Plus, it's Battler's game board. That alone opens up a huge can of worms as this game, evidenced by the existence of the chick Beato, is all about presenting Battler's understanding of the previous games.
