Flew in to our nation's capital from Denver with my good friend Pat for this show. A Night to Remember. Too many memories to digest.

One the beautiful things about Umphrey's is their ability to improvise as a band - not just as an individual soloing over a set riff or progression of chords. I've seen around 50 shows, and it's still, frankly, unbelievable to me how the band shares the creative outflow in real time. It's like spontaneous songwriting. This recording of JaJunk from 2018 at The Anthem in DC, the song being an 18-year-old staple in the UM repertoire, shows how the band comes up with truly original music in the "jam" portion of the song. Plus, JaJunk epitomizes the band's style with offbeat rhythms, guitar solos from both lead players (Brendan and Jake), and the synchronicity of the band as a whole. They even split the song and leave the last 5 minutes of JaJunk for the end of the show. Here's what I'd suggest you explore while checking out The Anthem 2018 JaJunk, along with timecodes. Start JaJunk 3:00:15. At 3:03:25 the improvisational section starts with Ryan on bass. At 3:05:15 during the improv, Jake starts leading by holding up hand signals to the band, calling out notes the band should play (They use visual hand signals, body language, listening to each other, and talk-back mics to communicate while playing). That's the heart of the group-improvisation, and UM's great strength. At 3:09:17, notice Joel (keyboards) talk to the band in his mic, to direct the improv back towards a quiet reset and get back to the song, which you can hear at 3:11:07. They go into the next song to finish this part of JaJunk at 3:15:55. Finally, skip to the encore/show ending JaJunk finish, starting at 4:13:05 to the end. --Gregg Davis

+Doug W Obviously they have no taste in what authentic music is and would much rather listen to top 40 radio were a song goes out of style within 4 months. What else can I say??

This was a great show! I expected Marcus King would sit in with the Umphrey's McGee. That didn't happen, but, damn, Larry Keel was a SICK alternative. The unexpected magic of live music. Thank you, fellas.
